Healing and Resilience A Review of Literature with Focus on Aboriginal Peoples and Communities Key Messages Historical trauma refers specifically to the inter-generational impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples. Every First Nation, Métis and Inuit community will have unique experiences of colonization due to significant diversity of culture, geographic location and other specific historical encounters or events. The most recent definition of historical trauma includes: colonial injury to Indigenous peoples by European settlers who ‘perpetrated’ conquest, subjugation, and dispossession; collective experience of these injuries by entire Indigenous communities whose identities, ideals, and interactions were radically altered as a consequence; cumulative effects from these injuries as the consequences of subjugation, oppression, and marginalization have ‘snowballed’ throughout ever-shifting historical sequences of adverse policies and practices by dominant settler societies; and cross-generational impacts of these injuries as legacies of risk and vulnerability were passed from ancestors to descendants in unremitting fashion until ‘healing’ interrupts these deleterious processes. First Nations in Alberta share an interconnected worldview that focuses on building, maintaining and strengthening relationships with all living things. The Healthy Spiral of Relationships model illustrates that worldview. The spiral symbolizes the interconnectedness of the people and all the beings in their world - animate, inanimate and spiritual. If this spiral was three dimensional, it would be moving to demonstrate that relationships are constantly changing and require ongoing efforts to build, maintain, renew, and strengthen them. Several colonial policies contributed to the eradication of Indigenous cultures and impaired survivors’ ability to create healthy family relationships. Those policies include the creation of residential and boarding schools, the apprehension of Indigenous children (known as the Sixties Scoop), and over-representation of Indigenous children in the child welfare system. The loss of connection and communication between children and their parents and grandparents severely damaged essential family relationships, blocking the transmission of cultural, ethical, and normative knowledge between generations. The Gradual Civilization Act, the Enfranchisement Act and The Indian Act are grounded in the colonial assumption that Indian language, culture, pedagogy, intellect, and spirituality were inferior. These three acts were created to force assimilation ostensibly for the benefit of the Indian people. Through these acts and later amendments, and residential schools, Indigenous were forced to renounce their culture, language and spirituality. Ongoing systemic racism in the current Canadian society has further affected the capacity to develop a positive individual or collective Indigenous identity. Colonization in Canada is the ongoing domination and displacement of Indigenous peoples without their consent, in an attempt to eradicate Indigenous cultural, familial, political, educational and spiritual systems and replace them with Christian European structures of power. The development of a welfare dependency has been the result, whereby Indigenous people do not feel capable or hopeful that they can affect change in their reality. Sean Andrew Wempe’s investigation of the afterlife in the 1920s of the Germans who lived in Germany’s colonies challenges a narrative that sees them primarily as forerunners to Nazi brutality and imperial ambitions. Instead, he follows them down divergent paths that run the gamut from rejecting German citizenship en masse in favor of South African papers in the former German Southwest Africa to embracing the new postwar era’s ostensibly more liberal and humane version of imperialism supervised by the League of Nations to, of course, trying to make their way in or even support Nazi Germany. The resulting well-written, nuanced examination of a unique German national identity, that of colonial Germans, integrates the German colonial experience into Weimar and Nazi history in new and substantive ways.

    Residence Patterns and Related Aspects of Kinship Organization in a Swampy Cree Community KATHRYN T. MOLOHON Laurentian University Introduction This paper examines residence patterns and related as­ pects of kinship organization in the contemporary Swampy Cree community of Attawapiskat, Ontario, Canada (see Honig- mann 1956, 1961; Molohon 1983, 1984a, 1984b; and Vezina 19- 78).' Attawapiskat is located at the mouth of the Attawapiskat River on the west coast of James Bay, and has a current pop­ ulation of about 1,000. During the first part of this century, the people under study were nomadic hunter-trappers who congregated around Hud­ son's Bay Company trading posts in the summer in order to trade their furs, buy supplies, and participate in religious and social activities. Beginning in the late 1960s, the majority of these people gradually became sedentarized in response to the introduction of government transfer payments (welfare pay­ ments), improved educational opportunities, access to medical and dental care, and improvements in both the availability and speed of long distance travel.     Criminal Justice in Contemporary Settler Colonialism: Tauri Criminal Justice as a Colonial Project in Contemporary Settler Colonialism Juan Marcellus Tauri Ngati Porou University of Wollongong Abstract This paper offers an Indigenous-centred, critical perspective on the Colonial Projects (Thomas, 1994) employed in settler-colonial contexts to negate, or at the very least nullify, the negative impact of two inter-related ‘wicked problems’ that are deemed peculiar to these jurisdictions: the high levels of Indigenous over-representation in the criminal justice system, and the impact of Indigenous resistance to the hegemony of the imposed, criminal justice systems deployed by settler-colonial states. The paper is comprised of three inter-related parts; the first two outline the construction and deployment of Colonial Projects in the colonial and neo-colonial contexts, wherein it is argued that the matrix of criminal justice was foundational to the state’s attempted eradication of, and eventual socio-economic marginalisation of Indigenous peoples. The final part offers an argument that the continued success of criminal justice as a (neo)colonial project, stems from its parasitic relationship with the discipline of criminology. Together, these supportive colonial projects deployment against Indigenous peoples demonstrates that structural violence continues to be a significant component of social control in the neo-liberal, neo-colonial context. I provide this groundwork for playwright and novelist Tomson Highway and his younger brother, dancer and choreographer René Highway (Woods Cree), and for the performance artist, filmmaker and painter, Kent Monkman (Swampy Cree). Using Cree methodologies, such as wâhkôhtowin or kinship and miyo-wîcêhtowin or getting along with others, the project illustrates how the Highways and Monkman use their art not only to combat racism and homophobia, but more importantly to show the survivance and vibrancy of Indigenous ways of knowing. By using Cree epistemologies, I show how queer theory and queer-of- colour theory can neglect to address colonisation. In four chapters, I show how the Highway brothers “stood together” to form community for their early and undocumented performances, such as New Song . New Dance, and through their involvement with Toronto’s Native Earth Performing Arts, Canada’s first professional Indigenous theatre company. I then compare a script written for a made-for-television movie with what it turned into the novel Kiss of the Fur Queen. I then examine Kent Monkman and his establishment of what David Garneau calls “Aboriginal sovereign display territory” in his paintings and performances, and devote a chapter to the work of his alter ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle.

    The syntax of Innu-aimun locatives∗ Will Oxford University of Toronto This paper provides a description and preliminary analysis of the syntax of locative phrases in the Algonquian language Innu-aimun (Montagnais). The paper establishes a taxonomy of locative categories and describes the properties of each category. It also sets out the ways in which these categories combine to form locative phrases, which are then analyzed as pPs in a model based on recent work by Svenonius (2006, 2010). Several syntactic patterns that affect locative phrases are described, including word-order variations and an apparent locative licensing effect. 1 Introduction This paper examines the syntax of locative expressions in Innu-aimun, an Algonquian language spoken in Quebec and Labrador. Innu-aimun, also known as Montagnais, is a member of the Cree- Montagnais-Naskapi dialect continuum, and is thus closely related to Cree proper. Aside from brief discussions in Clarke’s (1982) grammatical sketch (33–34, 134–36), the grammatical properties of Innu-aimun locatives had not been described in the literature prior to Oxford 2008; the current paper is a further development of the description begun in that work. My data comes from fieldwork and texts from the community of Sheshatshiu, Labrador, where Innu-aimun is still spoken as a first language by approximately 90% of the population (Burnaby 2004; Thorburn 2005). The main claim of the paper is that locative expressions in Innu-aimun form a grammatical system. There are three CORE LOCATIVE CATEGORIES, which form locative phrases: locative nouns, locative demonstratives, and locative prepositions. There are also two PERIPHERAL LOCATIVE CATEGORIES, which introduce or refer to locative phrases: locative presentatives and locative preverbs.
