CONTINENTAL THOUGHT & THEORY: A JOURNAL OF INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM Notes on Gender in Marx’s Capital Volume 1 | Issue 4: 150 years of Capital 19-37| ISSN: 2463-333X Notes on Gender in Marx’s Capital Silvia Federici Abstract As interest in Marxism and Feminism is reviving and Marx’s views on ‘gender’ are receiving a new attention, some areas of agreement among feminists are emerging that also shape my approach to the subject. 1 First, while denunciations of gender inequalities and patriarchal control in the family and society can be found in Marx’s work from an early stage, it is agreed that Marx “did not have much to say on gender and the family” 2 and, even in Capital his views on the subject must be reconstructed from scattered observations. Nevertheless, Marx’s work has given a significant contribution to the development of feminist theory, although not primarily based on his direct pronouncements on the subject. It discusses Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, ontology, psychology, ethics, and practice and relates these things to holistic education, critical pedagogy, SEL, and global education. On the basis of the theoretical understanding represented by that discussion, it articulates several theoretical principles that can be practically applied to the practice of teaching and learning to make it resonate with the theory and approach of socially- engaged Buddhism. In integrating the implications of Buddhist teachings and practices with teaching and learning practice, it draws from bell hooks’ notion of “engaged pedagogy” in order to articulate a transformational, liberatory, and progressive approach to teaching called “socially-engaged pedagogy.” Socially-engaged pedagogy represents the notion that teaching and learning can be a practical site for progressive social action designed to address the real problem of suffering, both in the present and in the future, as it manifests in the world, exemplified by stress, illness, violence, war, discrimination, oppression, exploitation, poverty, marginalization, and ecological degradation. -

Written testimony of Nadine Strossen before Joint Hearing of the Subcommittee on Health Care, Benefits, and Administrative Rules and the Subcommittee on Intergovernmental Affairs of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, “Challenges to the Freedom of Speech on College Campuses” – July 27, 2017, 9:00 a.m., 2154 Rayburn House Office Building (Nadine Strossen is the John Marshall Harlan II Professor of Law, New York Law School, and the immediate past national President of the American Civil Liberties Union, 1991-2008.) Introduction I would like to thank Chairman Jordan and Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi of the Subcommittee on Health Care, Benefits and Administrative Rules, and Chairman Palmer and Ranking Member Demings of the Subcommittee on Intergovernmental Affairs, for convening this hearing on such a critically important topic and giving me the opportunity to participate. Having consulted with Chairman Jordan and Committee staff members, we agreed that I could be most helpful to your deliberations by drawing upon my expertise as a constitutional law professor, who has specialized in First Amendment freedom of speech issues, including specifically campus free speech issues. So let me start by saying a word about my longstanding engagement with these issues. My first major law review article on point was published in the Duke Law Journal way back in 1990, analyzing why the then-new so-called “hate speech” 1 codes on college campuses were unconstitutional, as well as unwise. (I attach a copy of this article as Appendix A to my testimony.) Despite the passage of time, the article’s analysis continues to be pertinent and accurate. -
The Americas: Canada
The Americas Canada National Affairs (Canada enjoyed a year of political stability and relative prosperity. The minority Conservative government, which gained power in 2006, survived in the four-party House of Commons largely because the other parties were unwilling to force another election. The economy grew, unemployment was lower than it had been in decades, and the dol- lar ascended with surprising rapidity, exceeding par with its American counterpart for the first time in 30 years. Political highlights included elec- tions in the two largest provinces, Ontario and Quebec, neither of them leading to a change of government. In preparation for the Quebec election in March, Montreal's Jews were concerned because of their strong aversion to the secessionist Parti Quebecois (PQ). While the governing Liberals had lost popularity since winning a majority in 2003, they were able to hang on to a narrow plu- rality in a National Assembly that was split among three parties, result- ing in the first minority government for the province in over a century. The fact that the PQ was relegated to third place provided a measure of satisfaction to the Jewish community. Although Lawrence Bergman and Russell Copeman, both Liberals, were reelected, Premier Jean Charest left Bergman out of his new cabinet, the first time in decades that a Liberal premier with Jews in his caucus had failed to include at least one. In No- vember, a delegation from the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) met with Charest and expressed the community's dissatisfaction at the lack of Jew- ish cabinet representation. The biggest story of the election was the emer- gence of Action Democratique du Quebec (ADQ) as the second largest party, and thus the official opposition. -

Fennell Published online: 15 July 2010 Ó Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2010 Abstract This article examines archaeological studies of the cultural heritage and social dynamics of African descendant populations in the United States and Canada from AD 1400 through 1865. European colonial enterprises expanded in Africa and the Americas during that time span, effecting an accompanying movement of free and captive Africans into North America. Archaeological investigations of early African America are remarkable for the diversity of analytic scales and research questions pursued. This diversity of research efforts has yielded a highly productive, interdisciplinary expansion of knowledge concerning African diaspora histories. Keywords African-American archaeology Á Slavery Á Resistance Á Cultural heritage Introduction Archaeological research of African descendant populations in North America has expanded dramatically in scope and diversity over the past several decades. In addition to exchanging information, theories, and data through published venues, researchers working on African-American archaeology and the African diaspora have collaborated through resources such as the African Diaspora Archaeology Network (ADAN). The field promises even greater future advances in compiled data, detailed contextual interpretations, and comparative analyses. We can anticipate an increasing emphasis on comparative and synthetic studies based on an expanding field of research in the areas within North, Central, and South America, the Caribbean, and the regions of Africa impacted by the trans-Atlantic C. The soci- olinguistics and psycholinguistics behind Marshall Mathers and his music, though, are deserving of a PBS documentary. Eminem capitalizes on his lin- guistic genie with as much savvy as he does on his alter egos. He “flips the linguistics,” as he boasts in “Fast Lane” from Bad Meets Evil’s 2011 album Hell: The Sequel. As its title suggests, this essay focuses initially on the fact that rap is deeply rooted in black English, relating this to Eminem in the context of much information on the language of (Detroit) blacks. This linguistic excur- sion may not endear me to readers who hate grammar (or to impatient fans), but it ultimately helps to understand how Eminem and hip hop managed to adopt each other. -
