E-mail: [email protected] A. The burrowing and semiterrestrial crab Neohelice granulata actively and constantly builds its burrows in the intertidal zone of the Bahía Blanca Estuary during low tide. Differences in structural morphology of N. granulata burrows and burrowing activities in contrasting microhabitats (saltmarsh and mudflat) were analyzed and related to several conditions, such as tide level, substrate type, sediment properties, and population density. In the mudflat the higher density of total burrows in autumn (172 burrows·m–2) was associated with molt timing, and the higher density of active burrows in summer (144 burrows·m–2) was associated with reproductive migration. Sediments from biogenic mounds (removed by crabs) showed higher water content and penetrability than surface sediments (control), suggesting that bioturbation increases the values of these parameters. Grain size distribution profiles and mineralogical composition did not vary between microhabitats or between seasons. -

Jennifer Oliver and Anja Schmelter Life History of Hemigrapsus oregonensis and Hemigrapsus nudus Much is known about the life history of the two common intertidal shore crabs Hemigrapsus oregonensis and Hemigrapsus nudus. The following summary was compiled from Batie 1975; Behrens Yamada and Boulding 1996 and 1998; Cohen et. al 1995; Daly 1981; Grosholz and Ruiz 1995; Harms and Seeger 1989; Low 1970; Morris Abbot and Haderlie 1980; Naylor 1962; and Rudy and Rudy 1983. Both of these species are Brachyuran crabs belonging to the family Grapsidae. These crabs can be distinguished from other crabs by their square carapace and eyes, which are set out towards the front corners of their carapace. The characteristic features of Hemigrapsus oregonensis are the dull olive-colored hairs on its legs, and a carapace width ranging up to 34.7 mm for males and 29.1 mm for females. This carapace is colored yellow-green or gray and has a four-lobed anterior margin (Plate 1). H. oregonensis occurs from the high to low intertidal zones of bays and estuaries from Resurrection Bay (Alaska) to Bahia de Todos Santos (Baja California). -

Milne Edwards, 1853, found in the Chesapeake Bay, USA. Two male specimens were caught, retained, and identified from the mouth of the Patapsco River, near Baltimore, Maryland. The first crab to be reported was captured on 9 June 2006. Surprisingly, the second reported crab was captured at least one year earlier, probably in May 2005. Another two specimens of E. sinensis were reported up to 90km south of this location in April- June 2006, but the identity of these latter crabs could not be confirmed, because the specimens were not kept. Environmental conditions in Chesapeake Bay appear suitable for colonization by E. sinensis, and it is presently not known whether mitten crabs are reproducing or established in the region. -

An illustrated questionnaire/registration form was distributed among the commercial fishermen. The survey indicated a significant increase in the abundance of adult crabs in 2003 migrating downstream in the Neva River, the connecting channel between the Gulf of Finland and Lake Ladoga. On October 25, 2005, the Chinese mitten crab was reported from Taypolovsky Bay, Lake Ladoga and this is the first confirmed record from Europe’s largest lake.
