This is an edited translation of an article that first appeared in the institute’s publication, Materialdienst des Konfessionskundlichen Instituts Bensheim. At his first appearance as Pope on the loggia of St Peter’s on the evening of 13 March 2013, the Argentine cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio described himself as a bishop from the “ends of the earth.”1 Many Europeans thought that as a Latin American he would not see the issue of ecumenism, as it is understood in Europe and North America, as a priority during his term of office. But the pope from Argentina has been something of a surprise. Although he has not so far written a doctrinal text on ecumenism, Pope Francis has developed an “I’ll come over” diplomacy, based on the idea that Christians must talk and act together if they want to have an impact globally. With this “I’ll come over” diplomacy, Pope Francis has made some spectacular ecu- menical gestures. In 2014, he celebrated an ecumenical service with Orthodox churches in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. In mid 2014 he visited a Pentecostal community in Caserta. In June 2015, he became the first Pope to enter a Waldensian church. Some Personal Reminiscences: For many of us who came out of what might be called the "un- conscious fundamentalism" of the more conservative main- or old- line churches in America, the theology of Karl Barth was a godsend. Here at last it was possible to be true both to the Bible and to fervently held religious beliefs on the one hand, and to the best of modern culture and critical reason on the other hand, not by compromising between them, 'but by joyfully yet critically affirming both of them in the only appropriate way as shown to us by that theology. True, Karl Barth was an ocean and a language away, was born in another century, and had a very active theological lifetime's head start on us. But as his representative in Scotland was said to be Tom Torrance, so his representative in America was with us not only in spirit but in the flesh, living, breathing, teaching among us, in the person of his son Markus Barth. After breaking a lance with the Bultmannians; serving a pastorate in Bubendorf, Switzerland; and publishing a tome on baptism,2 Mar- kus was called to teach New Testament at Dubuque, Iowa; at the University of Chicago; at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary; and final- ly to succeed Oscar Cullmann in his beloved home town of Basel, Switzerland.3 It was in Chicago in 1962/63 that something of a theo- logical parousia occurred in my own life, when not only did Markus Barth - primarily through his weekly theological evenings "at home" - become my own mentor, advisor, and "spiritual father," but Karl .

    Jerusalem – 40 Years of Tantur – October 2012 Oscar Cullmann: In the Service of Biblical Theology and Ecumenism By André Birmelé In the years following the Second Vatican Council, Oscar Cullmann, a Protestant theologian coming out of the Lutheran tradition, was a co-founder of the Ecumenical Institute of Tantur in Jerusalem, which this year celebrates its fortieth anniversary. It was the personal wish of Pope Paul the Sixth to found this Institute together with Cullmann. The present rector of this Institute, Timothy Lowe, asked me to commemorate Cullmann, as I was a former student of Cullmann’s in Basel, a researcher in this Institute in the winter of nineteen seventy-eight / seventy-nine, and a theologian who in the last forty years has been involved in a great number of ecumenical activities. It is for me both an honor and a joy to fulfill this request today. I will proceed in three steps. First I’d like to say something about the person of Oscar Cullmann and his basic theological concerns.     SCRIPTURE, TRADITION AND AUTHORITY IN THE SECOND CENTURY BRUCE SHELLEY, Ph.D. Jesus Christ is the supreme authority for all Christians. There has never been any doubt about this fact in the historic church. As the incarnate Son he taught as one having authority (Mark 1:22). He cast out unclean spirits (Mark 1:27); he forgave sins (Mark 2:10); he modified the provisions of the Law (Matt. 5:21, 27, 33) ; and he claimed that he would be man's final judge (John 5:27) — all on the basis of his own divine authority. Standing at history's mid-point, the period of the incarnation, and at history's end, the second advent, he sums up in himself God's purposes for humanity. During this age, the period between the incarnation and the parousia, God grants to relative authorities a claim upon man's obedience. In the civil realm he has given power to earthly rulers (Romans 13:1-2). In the functioning of the church he distributes a measure of authority to leaders (II Cor. 10:13). And for the teaching of the church he has called and endowed select men called apostles (Acts 1:8, 21-22). Christian theology during this time faces a double task. It must "hold fast the form of sound words" (II Tim. 1:13) and it must witness of Christ "unto the utter- most part of the earth" (Acts 1:8). By preserving and propagating the first cen- tury message, it fulfills an apostolic ministry. By going into all the world in every age, it carries out a catholic mission.
