Continue In a world where AI is at the forefront of innovation, is it finally time for a with AI at its core? seems to think so, and the company's upcoming Mate 10 phone is doing just that. This is the first smartphone powered by the Kirin 970, which comes with a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for AI. Don't miss out: follows this year's flagship trend, with the first FullView huawei display. It's essentially a branding term for the narrower frames that both devices have, although their displays vary in quality and resolution. The Mate 10 has a 5.9-inch liquid crystal display with a more traditional side ratio of 16:9, while the Mate 10 Pro has a 6.0-inch Full HD AMOLED panel with a side ratio of 18:9. Both screens also support HDR 10, using apps such as YouTube and Netflix, which already display HDR content on . The fingerprint sensor is located in the back of the Mate 10 Pro, as are previous Huawei devices. On the usual Mate 10, Huawei squeezed the sensor into a small bezel under the display. The design of the Mate 10 series hasn't changed much from last year's Mate 9, but the framing reduction allows for a much smaller overall footprint. Both the Mate 10 and 10 Pro feel smaller than their display sizes would suggest, although the thin curves at the back offer an improved hand feel, especially for the regular Mate 10.Both devices are powered by Kirin 970, which is the star of the show. Announced at IFA 2017 last month - and a worthy winner of our Best of IFA award - Huawei's latest processor is the first that is designed with AI in mind. Using its custom NPU, Huawei says that the Kirin 970 will apply AI to the world around you. This is the first time you've seen it in camera scene modes. When using the camera and pointing it at the object, the NPU recognizes the type of object and adjusts the image accordingly in real time, during capture and after processing. We found that the function works very well, especially when noticing food, plants or flowers in the scene. The icon in the bottom corner helps signal which type of scene is recognized. What about the cameras in the back? Both devices continue Huawei's partnership with Leica and come with next-generation dual cameras. The main sensor is a 12-MP RGB sensor with OIS and a secondary camera 20 MP monochrome sensor. The LG V30 may have been the first smartphone camera with aperture f/1.6, but the Mate 10 is the first that aperture on both lenses. Huawei says it allows it to let in 90% more light than previous Mate smartphones. Like previous Huawei devices, they have a range of modes, including portrait mode, a wide aperture mode that allows you to change the aperture before or after shooting, and several modes dedicated to low-light photography. Hybrid scaling feature additional data provided by a large monochrome sensor and used for no loss. They also have a number of significant differences. The standard Mate 10 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage, while the Mate 10 Pro has 4/6GB of RAM and 64/128GB of storage. It is important to note that the Mate 10 Pro does not have a microSD card slot, while the standard Mate 10 does. The Mate 10 Pro offers IP67 dust and waterproofness, providing durability that was missing from Huawei's previous flagship devices, although the Mate 10 does not. The differences do not stop there. The standard Mate 10 features a 3.5mm audio connector, along with a 1Gbps data speed support thanks to the LTE Cat 16. Meanwhile, the Mate 10 Pro doesn't have a headphone jack and uses USB Type-C digital sound with an adapter in the box. The Mate 10 Pro also comes with 4X4MIMO, 256-AM and 3CC CA support, which means it is the first smartphone to support data speeds of up to 1.2Gbps. Both devices are powered by a 4000 mAh battery and support Huawei SuperCharge, which Huawei says can charge batteries of up to 58% in 30 minutes. The EMUI huawei interface is often the most polarizing feature on Huawei smartphones, although last year's EMUI 5 interface offered a welcome step in the right direction. This year Huawei jumped right on the EMUI 8 to coincide with Android 8.0 Oreo and developed parts of its interface with the AI-first approach in mind. The benefits of AI are mostly visible during day-to-day use, which means we'll have to wait for our full review in order to really test these features out. However, Huawei says that the NPU allows it to understand and respond to the context of the user's actions and provide recommendations to help. When reading the book, NPU will remind users to turn on the Eye Comfort mode.) Or, when taking a business card, the NPU will offer to scan the details in the phone book. Huawei has also made several changes to take full advantage of the big screen. Both devices have the option of a floating navigation dock that can be moved anywhere on the screen to facilitate navigation. It uses the same gestures found on the Porsche Design Mate 9 last year, with one tap to return, a long press to return home, and swipes left or right to activate the latest app menu. It's a bit confusing at first, but if you prefer to have traditional keys on the screen, they're also available. Huawei also announced that they were working with to develop Bing Translator on top Kirin. The Translator app will be pre-loaded on Mate 10 and will allow you to translate text as well as use the camera to translate objects and signs in real time using the help of Since not all developers see the need to develop directly on Kirin, there is also support for apps that use TensorFlow Lite and Facebook Caffe2 frameworks, to route these queries through the NPU. Huawei is also trying to appeal to business users with the addition of a single-label projection mode that allows you to use your smartphone as a PC. Using the USB Type-C to HDMI cable, Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro offer a dock-free version where the screen can either mirror or extend the smartphone display. When you dock, calls and other sensitive content coming to your phone will not be shared on the big screen. To control the PC-like experience, you can connect the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse - as both devices support dual Bluetooth connections - or you can use your smartphone display as a keyboard and mouse. The Huawei Mate 10 will be available in black, Moca Brown, Champagne Gold, and Rose Gold. The Mate 10 Pro will be available in Midnight Blue, Mocha Brown, Titanium Gray and Pink Gold. Price and availability information has not yet been announced. In general, Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro offer an interesting insight into the evolution of Huawei's smartphone portfolio. Both are big improvements compared to last year's Mate 9, but the question remains whether the AI-first approach is enough to appeal to users. In a year when every smartphone manufacturer has brought its best, Huawei's efforts certainly make them a contender. The Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro are two very similar devices, but a few differences between them mean that it can be difficult to install, which is actually a real flagship. Huawei has announced record pre-sales of the Mate 20 Pro in Western Europe within the first 10 days after launch. The previous pre-order record holder in the region was the P20 Pro.Unfortunately, the Mate 20 Pro will not be officially sold in the U.S. Since October turns #phonepocalypse we predicted, Huawei announced that the Mate 20 Pro has broken the company's pre-order record in Western Europe, which was previously held by the P20 Pro.According to Huawei, Mate 20 Pro pre-orders eclipsed the P20 Pro pre-orders by 40 percent. Such a large margin was achieved during the first 10 days of pre-orders Mate 20 Pro. Huawei does not say exactly how many pre-orders it has seen for its latest flagship smartphone, but you can bet that the company is happy with its seemingly increased presence in Western Europe.Unlike Chinese manufacturers like and , Huawei has had its presence known in Europe for years. Huawei not only sells many of its products in Europe, but the company is also looking to the continent as it strives to be at the forefront of the ongoing development of 5G technology. there were pre-order promotions that bundled the phone with a Huawei wireless charger and and GT. These stocks helped ease the Sting Mate 20 Pro's four-digit price tag. Even without pre-order promotions, the Mate 20 Pro is easily the most coveted phone on the market right now. Recall that Huawei's latest flagship is equipped with a 6.39-inch curved AMOLED display with a resolution of 3120 x 1440, Huawei's own Kirin 980 processor, either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, or 128GB of expandable memory, a fingerprint sensor in the display, and a 4200mAh battery that supports Huawei's new 40W standard. The Mate 20 Pro also has three rear cameras that make it a very powerful phone camera and have been more impressive than the lg V40 Slim Triple Camera setup. It will be interesting to see how Huawei carries this momentum with the fact that it is cooking for next year. For now, however, the company is looking at the end of 2018 with a very high-profile explosion. Huawei has a bad time. You don't know looking at the Mate 30 Pro, a shiny piece of kit that exudes luxury and cutting-edge technology. But then you unlock your phone and reality comes crashing in: there's no Gmail on this thing, or YouTube, or Google Maps. Worse, Huawei can do nothing to help. You have to find your own alternatives, hunt down APKs on third-party app stores, or resort to web applications. What Huawei will (and won't) do to scratch Google's itchy U.S. ban has forced Huawei to do the unthinkable. It's a smartphone costing 1,100 pounds with no apps that billions of people use every day. Does Google-less Mate 30 Pro have enough qualities to redeem itself? After spending three days with the phone, I have an answer. First-link Isway hopes to pull out of U.S. sanctions by relying on its domestic market, where it currently has about 40% of the market. The Mate 30 Pro will be released first there, although the company has promised it will bring it to other markets from next month. Despite these promises, the review units we were handed out after the Munich launch were actually Chinese versions (model LIO-AL00). It is also worth noting that these were engineering samples, not production units. Using the Chinese Mate 30 Pro makes for a confusing experience. The phone was pre-loaded with several Chinese apps and I was only familiar with a handful of them. Even if you set the language into English, you will still get some notifications in Chinese and the default keyboard was the Chinese typing scheme. It took me a while to figure out how to download Firefox and then the keyboard app from APKMirror.Next, I downloaded Slack (no problem!) and Gmail. Unfortunately, earning Gmail is not as easy as installing an APK file. The app just won't run for me. I decided to use a preinstalled customer email instead. It's basic, but it works with Accounts Gmail and it gets the job done. With these basics aside, I started using Mate 30 Pro Pro I tend to use any Android phone. Can I really make this my daily driver without the Play Store? Read: If the U.S. ban is repealed, Huawei will push Google apps Mate 30 within one nightThe AppGallery is a bad experience when I asked Huawei CEO Richard Yu if the company plans to pre-purchase any alternatives to app stores on the Mate 30 Pro, he said that users should try AppGallery, Huawei's own . AppGallery currently has about 45,000 apps, which is less than 2% of what the Store offers. I didn't have high expectations, but the choice and quality of the apps are still disappointing. There were only a few applications that I would even admit (not counting many fakes and low effort clones). There's no WhatsApp, no Netflix, no Spotify, no Twitter, no decent navigation app, and certainly no Google apps. In general, Huawei's own store is useless for customers outside of . The company has promised a $1 billion incentive for developers to bring more apps to its store, but so far there are no visible results. GorgeousLet hardware is simply to assume that you know your way around sideloading apps from third-party repositories, and missing the Play Store isn't a problem. What does the Mate 30 Pro actually like to use? The Mate 30 Pro is beautifully crafted, but for me it's an acquired taste. I'm not a fan of mirror trim and curved edges, and this phone has both in spades. I actually prefer the Mate 20 Pro in a better style, although I suspect Huawei wanted a flashy new design to help the Mate 30 Pro stand out on store shelves. However, for three days I used the Mate 30 Pro I found myself enjoying more and more. The screen is beautiful, and the curved edges make it appear that there are no side frames at all. The power button is narrow and almost hidden from view, but it's actually not that hard to use. I've had some problems with volume control that are now -based. Instead of physical volume buttons, you need to press twice on the curved edge of the screen, right above the power button. I couldn't make it work reliably at first because I was clicking on the very edge of the glass - instead, clicking a little more inside on the screen would do the trick. I still prefer the volume buttons and in some cases the double faucet leads to dangerous slips. What we will do for bezel-less designs... The notsing is a bit earlier than last year, and there is now a time-flying sensor for better bokeh effects. It still looks a bit dated because, with the exception of Apple, the industry has moved away from the big cutouts. Overall, the Mate 30 Pro looks and feels like something Super premium flagship phone should. I still don't dig a halo around the camera, and the curved edges aren't worth the hassle, but the Mate 30 Pro definitely looks the part. The camera (sometimes) better than the P30 ProI wouldn't talk about Battery life and raw specs here - you can read that in the full Mate 30 Pro review soon. Let's move on to the camera, a big deal on every smartphone these days. My first impressions are positive. I've compared the Mate 30 Pro Camera system to both the Mate 20 Pro and this year's P30 Pro, and so far, the Mate 30 Pro feels almost as good as the P30 Pro. Remember, the P series is supposed to be photo oriented, so the fact that the Mate 30 Pro can sometimes take the best shots is impressive. Focusing only on the comparison with the P30 Pro, I noticed the biggest changes in low light and night shots. The Mate 30 Pro has a better white balance, and the images have proven to be more natural than the yellow-bleached P30 Pro shots. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro Pro The P30 Pro still has an advantage when it comes to optical zoom - there is no periscope system on the Mate 30 Pro. Some night shots also appeared cleaner on the P30 Pro. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro Huawei P30 Pro Video is supposed to be a big deal on the Mate 30 Pro. The phone uses its wide-angle 40MP camera for video, which has a large sensor for better low quality light. I've seen some improvements compared to the P30 Pro, although I need to test it even more to really make an opinion about it. It's definitely a cool trick, provided you have an interesting theme and lots of light. I was just struggling to find things that move fast enough to look good in ultra slo-mo. More on this in the review. Next: Re-Googling Mate 30 ProAfter spending the weekend without access to many of the apps I usually use, I'm ready to bring Google back into my life. There are a few things that I could try in order to get Core, Play Store, and all Google apps and running on the Mate 30 Pro, and I will document the process in a separate post. Google question aside, my initial impressions of the Mate 30 Pro are positive. The phone is a true flagship that brings noticeable improvements in most areas. I'm a little mixed about design and it took me a few days to get used to the software, but I definitely see myself using the Mate 30 Pro as my daily driver. The question is, is Mate 30 Pro worth the money? Stay tuned for more information. Coverage.
