BIRDING THE ATLANTIC RAINFOREST, SOUTH-EAST BRAZIL ITORORO LODGE AND REGUA 11TH – 20TH MARCH 2018 White-barred Piculet (©Andy Foster) Guided and report compiled by Andy Foster www.serradostucanos.com.br Sunday 11th March The following 10 day tour was a private trip for a group of 4 friends. We all flew in from the UK on a BA flight landing the night of the 10th and stayed in the Linx Hotel located close to the International airport in Rio de Janeiro. We met up for breakfast at 07.00 and by 08.00 our driver had arrived to take us for the 2.5 hour drive to Itororo Lodge where we were to spend our first 6 nights birding the higher elevations of the Serra do Mar Mountains. On the journey up we saw Magnificent Frigatebird, Cocoi Heron, Great White Egret, Black-crowned Night Heron, Neotropic Cormorant and Roadside Hawk. By 10.30 we had arrived at the lodge and were greeted by Bettina and Rainer who would be our hosts for the next week. The feeders were busy at the lodge and we were soon picking up new species including Azure-shouldered Tanager, Brassy-breasted Tanager, Black-goggled Tanager, Sayaca Tanager, Ruby- crowned Tanager, Golden-chevroned Tanager, Magpie Tanager, Burnished-buff Tanager, Plain Parakeet, Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Rufous-bellied Thrush, Green-winged Saltator, Pale-breasted Thrush, Violet- capped Woodnymph, Black Jacobin, Scale-throated Hermit, Sombre Hummingbird, Brazilian Ruby and White-throated Hummingbird…. not bad for the first 30 minutes! We spent the last hour or so before lunch getting to grips with the feeder birds, we also picked up brief but good views of a Black-Hawk Eagle as it flew through the lodge gardens. -

E-mail: [email protected] The birds of the Thraupidae family, similar to other passerine birds can be infected by coccidia, and the genus Isospora can be considered the most relevant. Isospora thraupis, I. andesensis, I. irisidornisi, I. tiesangui, I. marambaiensis, I. sepetibensis, I. cadimi, I. navarroi, I. ramphoceli, I. sanhaci, I. sayacae and I. silvasouzai were described from thraupids of South American and considering that these birds are sympatric hosts of other birds that inhabit South, North and Central Americas, it is concluded that these parasites should be widely dispersed in the America Continent. -

Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species, among 7 families, are brood parasites. The 5 species of brood parasitic “cowbirds” are currently all treated as members of the genus Molothrus. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection. -

E-mail: [email protected] In recent years some coccidian parasites of birds were recorded in Marambaia Island, which is a protected environment with a great biodiversity of birds, mainly tanagers. In this current study Isospora tiesangui, I. sepetibensis, I. ramphoceli, I. navarroi, I. cadimi and I. marambaiensis were identified according to their respective thraupid hosts of the Marambaia Island. These species were characterized with histograms, linear regression and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The main feature of identification was the morphology of the sporocyst, mainly Stieda and substieda bodies, since the morphometry did not provide sufficient differentiation. Besides, Dacnis cayana and Thraupis palmarum were reported as new hosts to I. sepetibensis and I. navarroi respectively. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In the current study, a new coccidian species (Protozoa: Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) collected from the Brazilian tanager Ramphocelus bresilius dorsalis Sclater, 1855 is reported from Brazil. Isospora ramphoceli n. sp. has oocysts which are spherical to sub-spherical, 23.7 × 22.8 μm, with smooth, bilayered wall, ~1.2 μm thick. Micropyle, oocyst residuum and polar granule are absent. Sporocysts are ellipsoidal or slightly ovoidal, 16.0 × 11.4 µm. Stieda body knob-like and prominent and substieda body large and homogeneous. Sporocyst residuum is composed of granules of different sizes. Sporozoites are vermiform with one refractile body and a nucleus. This is the sixth description of an isosporoid coccidium infecting R. b. dorsalis and the twelfth description from Thraupidae. South East Brazil 18th – 27th January 2018 Grey-winged Cotinga (AF), Pico da Caledonia – rare, range-restricted, difficult to see, Bird of the Trip Introduction This report covers a short trip to South East Brazil staying at Itororó Eco-lodge managed & owned by Rainer Dungs. Andy Foster of Serra Dos Tucanos guided the small group. Itinerary Thursday 18th January • Nightmare of a travel day with the flight leaving Manchester 30 mins late and then only able to land in Amsterdam at the second attempt due to high winds. Quick sprint (stagger!) across Schiphol airport to get onto the Rio flight which then parked on the tarmac for 2 hours due to the winds. Another roller-coaster ride across a turbulent North Atlantic and we finally arrived in Rio De Janeiro two hours late. Eventually managed to get the free shuttle to the Linx Hotel adjacent to airport Friday 19th January • Collected from the Linx by our very punctual driver (this was to be a theme) and 2.5hour transfer to Itororo Lodge through surprisingly light traffic. Birded the White Trail in the afternoon. Saturday 20th January • All day in Duas Barras & Sumidouro area. Luggage arrived. Sunday 21st January • All day at REGUA (Reserva Ecologica de Guapiacu) – wetlands and surrounding lowland forest. Andy was ill so guided by the very capable REGUA guide Adelei. Short visit late pm to Waldanoor Trail for Frilled Coquette & then return to lodge Monday 22nd January • All day around lodge – Blue Trail (am) & White Trail (pm) Tuesday 23rd January • Early start (& finish) at Pico da Caledonia. -

First and foremost we tallied 391 species , a whopping 140 of which were regional and/or Brazilian endemics! These figures become all the more impressive when you consider that many of the wider ranging species not included as “endemics” in the preceding tallies are represented in southeast Brazil by distinctive subspecies endemic to the Atlantic Forest region, and that at least 15–25 of these subspecies that we recorded during our tours are likely to be elevated to separate species status in the near future! Beginning in São Paulo, our first destination was Intervales State Park, my own personal favorite among the many great birding spots included in our southeast Brazil trip. Intervales never fails to deliver a huge serving of Atlantic Forest endemics and just plain fantastic birding experiences, and such was the case again this trip. We began the first evening with one of my personal highlights, the fabulous and incredibly cooperative male Long-trained Nightjar . In fact, the male Long-trained Nightjars put on a show for us on two consecutive nights, treating us to multiple close passes, with two males chasing each other just above our heads. -

For those of Robb T. Brumfield you up North who are dealing with actual cold, I apologize. Director, Roy Paul Daniels At our recent Holiday Party, we crowned Dr. Andrés Cuervo Professor and Curator of Genetic Resources as 2013’s Outstanding Graduate Student. This is always a difficult choice for the Curators because the Museum Frederick H. Sheldon George H. graduate students are all ‘outstanding.’ Andrés, who is now a postdoctoral fellow at Lowery, Jr., Professor and Tulane University, distinguished himself by having an outstanding record of publications Curator of Genetic Resources (28 peer-reviewed papers), grantsmanship (a prestigious NSF DDIG, an LSU Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship, and an LSU Huel Perkins Diversity Fellowship, plus Christopher C. Austin Curator of many others), and service to the Museum. To collect samples for his dissertation, Herpetology Andrés spent several months in the field conducting logistically challenging fieldwork Prosanta Chakrabarty in the Andes mountains of Colombia and in Venezuela. Through his dissertation work, Curator of Fishes Andrés amassed the largest genetic data set of Andean birds ever assembled, with Jacob A. Esselstyn DNA sequences from over 2000 individuals. Andrés’ dissertation represents the largest Curator of scale comparative study of any Andean organism, and I expect the papers coming out Mammals of his work to be widely cited. -

BROWNELL LITTLE studyhas beenmade of the relative sizesof adrenaland thy- roid glandsin different speciesof birds. One of us (Hartman, 1946) reported such a study on birds collectedin the United States some years ago. In this paper, resultson birds collectedin Panamainclude a numberof familiesand speciesnot found in the United States, some migrants from the United States, and two domesticspecies, Gallus gallus and Coturnix coturnix. Data from 249 speciesin 49 familiesare reported. Specimenswere obtained during Decemberand January near sea level on the Rio Chagresand during February and March at 1,300 meters elevation near the villageof E1 VolcAnin the Provinceof Chiriqui. This material was also usedto study the musclesof locomotionas well as to furnish skins of the rare forms. METHODS All specimenswere kept in plastic,waterproof bags to preventdrying until weighed at the field station. Small birds were weighed on a torsionbalance of 120 gramscapacity. Larger oneswere weighedon Chatilion spring balances,the most sensitiveone for the weight in- volved being used: 6,000 grams capacitywith 24 grams sensitivity; 500 gramscapacity with 10 gramssensitivity; and 250 gramscapacity with 5 grams sensitivity. The adrenalsand thyroids were carefully dissectedfree of extraneoustissue with the aid of a binocularloupe and promptlyweighed on a Roller-Smith balanceof either 30 mg. or 1,500 mg. capacity,depending upon the size of the specimen.The thorough- ness of the dissectionis extremely important becausemore or less extraneoustissue may adhereto the gland,especially the adrenal,thus contributingto the error. Only birdsof healthyappearance were used. Most birds were collected between 0700 and 1100. -

Ampliação da distribuição da cigarra-bambu Haplospiza unicolor Cabanis, 1852. A cigarra-bambu Haplospiza unicolor é uma ave endêmica da Mata Atlântica, que usualmente acompanha a frutificação de bambus do gênero Chusquea. Essa espécie tem registros no Brasil para os estados de Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul. No entanto, não existem registros para a porção centro-meridional da Cadeia do Espinhaço, no norte-nordeste de Minas Gerais. Os registros relatados neste trabalho, obtidos no Parque Estadual do Rio Preto e em Cariri, Minas Gerais correspondem ao extremo norte da espécie, expandindo sua distribuição geográfica.
