Cambridge

Cambridge is a university city and the of , , on the about 50 miles (80 km) north of . At the Census 2011, its population was 123,867, including 24,488 students.

There is archaeological evidence of settlement in the area in the Bronze Age and in ; under Viking rule, Cambridge became an important trading centre. The first town charters were granted in the 12th century, although city status was not conferred until 1951.

Cambridge is the home of the , founded in 1209 and one of the top five universities in the world. The university includes the , King's College , and the Cambridge University Library. The Cambridge skyline is dominated by the last two buildings, along with the spire of the Our Lady and the English Martyrs Church, the chimney of Addenbrooke's Hospital and St John's College Chapel tower.

Cambridge is at the heart of the high-technology Fen with industries such as software and bioscience and many start-up companies spun out of the university. Over 40% of the workforce have a higher qualification, more than twice the national average. Cambridge is also home to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, one of the largest biomedical research clusters in the world, soon to be home to AstraZeneca, a hotel and relocated Papworth Hospital.

By Air

Air travel into the UK with its regular and daily flights arriving from all world-wide destinations is quick and easy. There are numerous driving routes from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, via the M4, M25, and M11, or M25, A1, or from and East Airport via the M1. We recommend air flight travel, if possible, into London Stansted, as this is the closest to Cambridge.

There are direct flights from all major European airports to . Stansted is set right beside the M11 and is a 25 minutes journey away. It has direct train links and a regular coach travel service to and from Cambridge and London.

London Airport has easy access direct into the region via the M1, M25 and the A505. It offers a range of international and domestic flights (approximate travel time from Cambridge to Luton 45 minutes).

By train

The is served by an excellent rail link network. Regular fast trains run to all major cities and towns in the region. London stations which serve the region are: Kings Cross, Street, London Euston, London Marylebone, Fenchurch Street, and St. Pancras. St. Albans, Luton and are on the rail line which runs into London stations and on to Gatwick Airport.

Travelling Within Cambridge

Citi Buses

Stagecoach offers a network of frequent & reliable buses, these provide excellent access to all parts of Cambridge.

Many different types of ticket are available including the City Megarider, which provides unlimited travel on Citi buses for seven days.

For quick & easy access to the city centre from the railway station look out for the Citi 1, Citi 3 or Citi 7.

Our Poster Session on Monday night will be in the Common Room from 18:00 – 20:00.

Walking Tour

If you are attending the walking tour, please meet at 19:00 outside the David Attenborough buildings. Please check which group you are in on Tuesday morning at the Registration Desk. The tour will finish at the Cambridge Brewhouse, where there will be a drink and food provided, plus a cash bar.

If you are joining the group for the pub meal and drink only, you can join us from 20:00 onwards. We have both function rooms upstairs, so please ask at the bar for the British Ecological Society event.

Food and Refreshments Your registration includes tea/coffee each day and lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday. All catering will be available in the Common Room during the designated refreshment breaks.

Badges For security and regulation purposes, please ensure you wear your registration badge at all times throughout the venue.

Mobile Phones As a courtesy to speakers and other delegates, we ask that all mobile phones and electronic devices be changed to silent mode before entering into any session.

Lost Property Please hand in lost property to the Registration Desk where it will be made available for collection.

First Aid Should you require first aid assistance during the Annual Symposium, please contact and BES team member who will be able to guide you to the appointed first aider.

Venue Security and Drills In the event of an emergency, security and CCI staff will guide you to safety. There will not be any fire alarm tests during our Symposium and therefore any alarm should be considered the real thing.

Insurance and Liability The Symposia organisers will not accept liability for personal injury or loss/damage to property/belongings of participants or accompanying persons, before, during or following the Symposium, tours or their stay in Cambridge. It is therefore recommended that participants arrange their own personal health, accident and travel insurance.
