Dear Parents/Guardians,

February was as usual a busy and exciting month at Prairie Rose School. Our students and staff were filled with energy and excitement during all the celebrations and activities. Some highlights centered around the numerous activities related to 100th Day of School, Reading Club, Valentine's Day parties, I Love to Read activities and Track and Field, just to name a few. Our athletes have enjoyed hours full of fun and exercise during noon -hour intramurals and our Track and Field teams have once again had a successful season of high level performance and sportsmanship. We appreciate the support and the commitment our students and parents give to our programs which make us all so proud to be “Prairie Rose Panthers”.

March also signals the end of Term 2 and report cards are around the corner. This provides an opportunity to reflect upon and highlight the accomplishments of our students and set learning goals for the spring. Please spend some time to discuss the Report Card with your child and to celebrate together. We look forward to having you visit during our Student -Led Conferences March 12 and 13.

The Prairie Rose Spring Fundraiser begins this month and features World’s Finest Chocolates. We hope you will consider supporting our spring fundraiser. Items will be available for pick up during Student Led Conferences. There will be detailed letter to follow. We are also looking forward to seeing many of you celebrate with us the musical talents of our students at the upcoming Music Festival, both our Primary and Intermediate Choirs will be performing.

AM N/K News by Ms. Romaniw

February was a very busy and exciting time for us! We started our month celebrating friendship and sharing our love for our classroom community with a fun Valentine’s Day celebration! To prepare for our event we made Valentine’s Day bags and enjoyed some Valentine’s Day learning centers. We sorted hearts by size and color, matched uppercase and lowercase penguins, participated in a Valentine’s Shape Sort and matched number words, 10 -frames and numbers in a heart puzzle!

We ended our month with an exciting week for “I Love to Read Week”. Our favorite day was “Wacky Hair Day”! Come check out our bulletin board we created for our school’s theme of Powerful Poetry… we worked hard on our acrostic poems. For our Acrostic Poems we wrote our names downward and used our favourite words for each letter in our name!

Looking ahead we are excited to plan some St. Patrick’s Day activities and continue building on the sight words we have been focusing on to support us with our At -Home Reading Program.

We ended our month with an exciting week called “I Love to Read Week”. Our favorite day was Pajama Day! We worked very hard and read every day so we could drop our rocks into the jar and earn a classroom movie. When you have a chance stop by our bulletin board, it is full of our colour poems! A Colour Poem is when you choose a colour and describe it or list things that colour! We had a hard time choosing, which colour was our favourite. We love them all!

Looking ahead we are excited to plan some St. Patrick’s Day activities and continue building on the sight words we have been focusing on to help us with our At -Home Reading Program.

February seemed to pass very quickly in our room. We talked all about love and celebrated Valentine’s Day with some special treats. Thank you to all the parents who contributed to making our Valentine’s Day even more special. We also participated in many fun “I love to Read” activities. Mrs. Barros, the grade 2/3 teacher came into our room to read us a few of her favourite books and we heard many silly poems/ stories from various teachers over the intercom.

We are excited to learn all about colours in March. We will be making predictions and learning about colour mixing. We will also continue to work on our sight word recognition and learning some new spring songs. As the weather starts to warm up, we are hoping to go outside daily again. Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing to wear outside.

Home Reading has been a huge success so far! Thank you to all the parents/ guardians for reading with your child in the evenings. Please make sure you sign your child’s reading log if they read the book, to ensure your child receives a new book to read.

This month students have had opportunities to listen to guest readers, count many different objects up to 100 and celebrate Valentine’s Day. We worked hard on learning about the properties of matter and conducted many experiments! We also created a poem to highlight “The Paper Bag Princess” book that we read. We even got to watch a play about this book! We also learned about how to show kindness in different ways! We continue to work on counting, adding, and place value in class through number of the day and number talks in addition to individualized tasks through DreamBox. Thank you to those who continually help their children at home through the Home Reading Program. Students may continue to utilize the online Raz Kids resource and Dreambox at home. Thank you for your help!

February was a very exciting month with I Love To Read Week activities, 100 Day and Valentine’s day. We loved our guest readers, mystery readers, the storyteller, the reading and recording of many books, the fun contests and the fun dress up days. We also enjoyed the Prairie Theatre Exchange play called The Paper Bag Princess that came to our school. What an exciting fun -filled month! Thank you to all parents who sent fruit to school for our Valentine’s Day party. We had a lot of fun cutting up the fruit, preparing for our party and of course eating our friendship fruit salad together. We learned about fruit as an excellent snack and we really enjoyed the extra snacks on a couple of other days too. We also enjoyed making 100 day crowns and building and counting 100 in many different ways for our 100 day celebration. Our class has been working very hard on our fun in the snow collages. We have been writing stories to go along with these pictures. We have also made cinquain poems that are hanging in the hall. Cinquains are a five lined poem with a special pattern. We had a lot of fun illustrating these poems with collage characters. In math we have been doing a lot of counting by 2's, 5's and 10's and have been making number families and learning how to use an empty number line to solve problems. In science we have been learning about animals in winter and have been doing some snow activities. We have also been learning about solids and liquids. We get books for our Home Reading program every day. Please read to your child and enjoy talking about the book that your child has chosen. Home Reading also helps to improve your child's listening and speaking skills. Thank you so much for your support. I look forward to seeing you and your child at Student -Led Conferences on March 12 in the evening and on March 13. At that time your child will be sharing and celebrating his or her growth and progress.

Valentine’s Day, 100 Day, I Love To Read week...all special days, events and activities that happened during the month of February! No wonder it flew by so quickly!! Our team had lots of fun participating in all of these special events. We celebrated the 100th day of school by enjoying lots of fun learning activities surrounding the number 100! We had an estimating contest where we had to decide which container held 100 items. We went on a scavenger hunt to find numbers 1 -100 and then we had to put them in the right spot on a blank 100 chart! In the gym we participated in fitness stations where we had to do 100 jumping jacks, 100 hops, 100 high fives, etc. We wrote and drew about what we would look like if we were 100 years old, what we would do with $100 and what we would like to eat 100 of. We wrote our names as many times as we could in 100 seconds. We got in small groups, cooperated together and designed and built a structure with 100 small paper cups. It was lots of fun and our structures were amazing!! We also got to show our fantastic “100” projects that were made at home with the help of our families. The day ended by eating a cake in the shape of a 100! Our “I Love To Read” week was called, “Powerful Poetry” It was a special week full of poetry reading and writing, dress up days, special guest readers, authors, a storyteller and many contests. The whole school read enough books during the week to earn ourselves a movie! We watched “Ferdinand”. Our big project lately has been an animal research project. We are learning interesting facts about a number of amazing Canadian animals. We will each complete an animal shape book and a diorama of our animal in its habitat. We look forward to bringing home our report cards on March 10th and sharing our portfolios and classroom activities with our families on March 12th and 13th. See you then!!!

February was a whirlwind of activities! We loved celebrating 100 Day, sharing cards on Valentine’s Day, meeting guest readers, dressing up and learning about Poetry for I Love to Read Week! Each student has a math goal that they are working on. You can help them at home by asking about their goals and helping them to complete it. Many of their goals involve skip counting or single number addition and subtraction. In ELA, we are working on comprehension. We are practicing our understanding of the book by pausing and thinking about the paragraph or page we just read. You can help at home by discussing your child’s home reading books with them. Please remember that Raz -Kids is available at home and is a GREAT tool for reading levelled books and answering questions about the book. We are just finishing up our second unit in social studies. The students can recognize many Canadian symbols and understand that Canada has 2 official languages. We looked at boxes from our grocery stores and sketched them in French and English. We are excited to share some of our work with you at the student led conferences and I am looking forward to meeting with you to share your child’s successes!

Another month has flown by so quickly! We had a great month celebrating Valentine’s Day and I Love to Read Week! I Love to Read Week was so much fun with different activities, dress up days, and guest readers. We even earned a special movie afternoon by reading so much during the week! We watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory since we just finished reading the novel. We noticed there were lots of similarities between the movie and novel, but lots of differences, too! We just started our new novel, The BFG. It is written by the same author as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl! We are going to continue with the Powerful Poetry theme from I Love the Read, and start writing more poetry in class! In math, we’ll be busy continuing with Dreambox learning as well as focus on our multiplication facts, mental math strategies and problem solving. We just wrapped up our Habitats and Communities unit in Science, so we will start the month with our research project presentations and then begin a new Social Studies unit of Canadian Geography. We have started to learn about famous artists and their techniques in Art. Using the elements of art and their technique, we’re creating our own versions! March will be another busy month filled with learning, as well as another track day at U of M and Music Festival! We will be busy with our portfolio preparations as we get ready for Student Led Conferences on the 12th and 13th. Looking forward to seeing you then!

Gr. 3 & 4 News by Mr. Young Oh I love to read week. We read a lot of chapters, we earned rocks and the rocks we earned went in a really big jar and we filled it in five days. We also had fun activities every day like Wacky hair day, Book character day, Heritage day, and Pajama day on Friday. We got to watch a movie because we all filled a ginormous jar and during the week we had booklet that means when you hear a nice sound like night time and the star shining you get a book and start reading and some kids get caught reading they got prizes and the others got treats. - Written by Prabhjeet

On Pajama day, all the students get to wear pajamas and every student gets to bring one stuffed toy and Mr. Young’s class had the most stuffed toys. This week we started division and we did math groups and we just found out that our room had the highest use of Dream Box. - Written by Andrea

Grade 5 and 6 News by Mr. Tosczak

Are you wondering what your child has been doing this month? Well here is your answer… Lots of things such as art, math, science fair, social studies, novel study, I love to Read Week, music festival practice, track and field practice and so much more. I know that’s a lot of things and too much for one newsletter, so we will just tell about science fair, novel study and I love to Read Week this time. In science fair, we have completed so much work at school. We have now finished our purpose, background research, hypothesis, variables, materials, procedure and bibliography. Now we are collecting materials and beginning our experiments. We would love to share a few experiments with you in this newsletter, so here they are: Nishtha and Brooklyn are exploring cloud formation. Mickael, Jesse and Lucian are testing different types of rockets to see which one travels the furthest. Also Djanina and Nica are trying to find out who has a more creative mind; grade ones or grade sixes. There are many more science experiments and we will continue to share next month. In Novel Study, we finally finished our book “The Breadwinner”. “The Breadwinner” is about a girl named Parvana who lives in Kabul, Afghanistan. Her father was taken away, so Parvana had to dress up as a boy to get food and money for her family. Along the way, Parvana met her friend from school who also dressed up as a boy. “The Breadwinner” is a coming of age story that talks about violence and war, hunger, love, tragedy and death. Finally, this month a special week happened, it was “I Love to Read Week”. We had 4 different guest readers who were able to talk about their careers and read to our classroom. First we had come to the classroom. He is a running back for the . His jersey number is the number 20. He read a book called “Boo!” and in the end, we got autographs from him. We also got to ask him questions about football and the . Our next guest reader was Jamie Oliveira. He was a story teller that talked about the Forks. He told a story about three brothers that lived in a village with no one else. When two brothers went out to hunt, the other brother went for a walk and saw a skull that had very sharp teeth. We liked that he was very funny because he made everyone laugh. Third, Nic Demski is also a Winnipeg Blue Bomber. He came to the library to read to us. He read “Down the Drain” by Robert Munsch. We got autographs and we also got to ask him questions. Mickael asked if there were any funny moments during football practice. Finally, our last guest reader was Bubba B, a radio DJ for 99.1FM. Each class he went to, he read a different book. Some of the books were “I’m So Embarrassed” by Robert Munsch, “Down the Drain” by Robert Munsch, and “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” by Dr. Seuss. One of our favourites was “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” because Bubba kept messing up the words because there were so many rhymes. I hope you enjoyed reading this newsletter. We would love to tell you about everything else, so ask us when we get home from school, just make sure that we still have time to play. See you next month…. Well, actually we’ll see you at home, so I guess we will write to you next month.

Gr. 5 and 6 News by Mrs. Severa February went by fast. Our class continued to focus on our preparations for Science Fair. We broke down our huge task into little goals and tried our best to accomplish them by the due date we have set. So far, most of the students have completed their Background Research. This helped them identify a question to investigate, and provide a hypothesis to support their prediction. They are also now into gathering their materials and listing down the procedures for their experiment. They have also identified the variables they will control. We are hoping to get the experiments started by the beginning of March, and then interpret the result and draw conclusions from them in the week after that. In Math, we continued with our Measurement Unit to support our goals for our Science Fair Project. Students learned about Volume, Capacity, and Elapsed Time. They estimated, built, drew and recorded their rectangular prisms to determine Volume. They also measured the volume of objects with irregular shapes by measuring the amount of water displacement. In Social Studies, students have been learning about the culture of the Aboriginal Groups in Prehistoric Canada. Students are now planning to present the information they gathered through making a diorama. In ELA Writing, we continued to work on increasing students’ ability in descriptive writing through learning about visual imagery as a combination of the use of different figurative language such as simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, and sensory imagery. Students tried to apply this skill in the poem they wrote for their parents for Valentine’s Day. In Reading strategies, we continued to use various ways to visualize as a comprehension strategy. These include using a map and making a diorama. Congratulations to all the students who submitted an entry to Polar Expressions Short Story Writing Contest. They did an exceptional job in writing an enjoyable and heartwarming stories. In particular, we congratulate those whose work were chosen for publishing in a book anthology: Aditi A., Carrington M.. Isabelle S., Christiana A., Prabhjot G., Nevaeh M., Nick R., and Amy S. During I Love to Read Week, we were very fortunate to have guest readers for our class such as Ms. Cindy Lamoureux MLA for Burrows, Mr. Nic Demski from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and Mr. Jaime Oliviero, an internationally renowned storyteller.

Gr. 5 and 6 Student News by Mr. Forbister

I Love to Read week was in full swing this month. We got to listen to many guest readers, including Blue Bomber Nic Demski. It was very cool to hear stories from a Grey Cup winner. We created Diamante Poems to display in the hallway too. It was fun to go around and try to figure out which staff created the mystery poems. We also played an escape room. King Emoji captured our class and we had to use our knowledge of summarizing to escape. Team The 5ive Girls were the winners, followed closely in second place by Team One 2. In math, we learned about graphing and tables. We know how to organize data into a broken line graph and a stem and leaf plot. Broken line graphs make it easy to see change over time and a stem and leaf plot makes it easier to find numbers in a range. We started working hard on our science fair topics. So far, we are doing great. We have worked on our purpose, our hypothesis our background information, our material lists, and our procedures. We will be starting our experiments very soon. March will be a very exciting (and busy) month!
