These details vary from genealogist’s handwritten notes, items scribbled on bits of paper or in the margins of books, to documented records at the FFAA library, county court houses or state archives. The information from transcribed records are essential to this book, but the process opens the possibilities for errors. We have found that information can be misinterpreted in many ways. We have done our utmost to “give credit, when credit is due.” Through the years, we have been contacted by a small number of contributors whom generally express the same theme. It is that their material used without receiving proper recognition. If we have not properly acknowledged a source, it was through an error in record keeping and not an intentional act. If this oversight has occurred, we sincerely apologize. Our goal is to preserve the history of John Friend Sr. and his family. When asking a researcher for permission to include some of her work in this book, she replied; “You are welcomed to use any portion or all of it as you wish. I do not own it. It is owned by our ancestors and committed into our care to pass along to those that follow after.” How profound and true are those word, for the history of our ancestors is not ours to own and hide away, but it is rather something to be shared with all “that follow after”. The information for family lines was collected from direct descendants whenever possible. Hopefully, this direct connection with a person would generate the most accurate information. Unfortunately, this can be the source of family legends. While most legends are based on actual events, the final version of a story can stray wide of the mark. 16 Therefore, the information within this text, though thoroughly checked, may still contain unintentional errors. If these errors do exist, we truly apologize. 17 Introduction John Friend Sr. influenced generations of descendents by leading a normal life. John Friend Sr. moved his young family and wife, Karrenhappuck Hyatt, into the wilds of Western Maryland over 250 years ago. What John found that was so unique or compelling in the backwoods is lost to time. We believe he made this journey to provide a better life for his family and those who came afterwards. John Friend Sr. has become one of the most noted people in early Garrett County history, for he is credited as the first emigrant to establish a permanent home in that wilderness. The goal of this book is to honor John’s memory by preserving the facts of his life and those of his ancestors as well as descendents. John Friend Sr. was probably born about 1728 in the Monocacy Hundred1, Prince George’s County (now Frederick), Maryland. We believed he passed away some time after 1808 in Allegany County (now Garrett) Maryland. John Friend Sr., commonly known as “Old” John Friend, was the son of Nicholas Friend and the great grandson of Nils Larsson Friend. Nils Friend (Frande) immigrated to the new world from Sweden in 1648 and John’s lineage can be trace back to Nils as follows: John Friend Sr. (Abt. 1728 to Aft. 1808) Nicholas Friend (Abt. 1700 to Abt. 1791) John (Johannes) Nilsson Friend I (Abt. 1666 to Abt. 1737) Nils Larsson Friend (Abt. 1619 to Abt. 1686) Work started on this book over sixteen years ago, when Patty (Friend) Thompson set out to discovered her own Friend heritage. At first, we collected the existing information about John and his family, thus considering ourselves “Gatherers” of 1 The definitions of a ‘hundred” when use as a land terms referred to a political and taxation unit carried over from English law. The hundred is smaller than a county and consisting of enough land to raise approximately one hundred fighting men. 18 information rather than genealogists. Our intentions were to share these facts, histories and stories with our families. Because of this limited view, there was a careless trend in documenting or citing sources of this early research. Contacts were developed with other researchers (some, via the Internet) through the years and many have graciously and generously shared their own work. We became acquainted through the Internet over six years ago. For nearly a year there were questions, answers and information emailed back and forth, before discovering that we lived within five miles of one another. This compilation and evaluation of information about John Friend Sr. and his family has extended through the years. Most of the facts and stories presented in the book were first rediscovered by other descendents of John Friend Sr. These tales have been confirmed at times, while some stories, once thought-to-be-set in stone, have been questioned and refuted. Sadly, our immediate families had little or no interest in the work.
