The recipients of this award for the last week are: Fletcher Sanders, Rachel Rockell, Bridget Takimoana and Khloe Smith Kia ora whanau This week has been one of many emotions for me, as I expect it has been for you. My huge sadness arising from the events in Christchurch reminds me of why, at Maruia School we model and live the values of kindness, compassion, tolerance, respect in all things, especially diversity, seek to be inclusive and understanding of all others, and share the aroha. As a nation we will have many questions in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Be strong, hold to our values and where intolerance creeps in, let it be for bigotry, hatred, selfishness and, intolerance itself. Take time for family, say kia ora to your neighbour, give your smile to a stranger, share the aroha. With those thoughts in mind, I say a big Maruia talofa lava to Regina Ieti who was welcomed in to the Maruia School whanau yesterday afternoon after a long day of travel from Auckland. Thank you to all who made it along to school at short notice yesterday to welcome Regina and a huge big thank you to the children and Mrs Thomson for the welcome you prepared. My special thanks to Ella for the karanga, Kumo for the whaikorero and Moneka for walking Regina onto our school grounds. To all the children, an awesome assembly, and thank you again Mrs Thomson. My apologies for being a little late – it was a particularly slow drive down from Nelson. A NEW TEACHER: Regina, Miss Ieti, will begin officially next week but you will have further opportunity to meet her at the Maruia and Reefton Triathlon being held here from 11:30am. We are still looking for some volunteers to supply some firewood for Regina. Give me a call if you can provide some wood or any of the other items above. EVENTS: Maruia and Reefton Triathlon – This is on this morning – Thursday - today. It’s an event about participation and we welcome children from Sacred Heart School as well as a small team from Reefton Area School to Maruia today. Buller School’s Athletics – As per last week’s newsletter the date clashes with my trip to Greymouth on 26 March for the Tomorrow’s Schools Review Consultation. Karen has kindly agreed to accompany the children to Westport on my behalf. We still need at least one more vehicle for transport. We need to be in Westport by 9:15 am so will need to be leaving Maruia School by 7:15 am. We return to Maruia around 4:30pm so will endeavour to drop children off at their homes. Please complete the slip at the end of the newsletter. The postponement date for this event is Thursday 28 March. We are expected to help out with running the long jump event with Murchison. The event is for Year 5 – 8 children. Sacred Heart and Maruia Swimming Sports – This event is now being organised for 5 April at the Reefton Pool which is a heated pool. This event is designed to get all children taking part in swimming activities as well as provide an opportunity for our more advanced swimmers to be a bit competitive. More details once they come to hand. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we can keep our pool open for as long as possible to keep the children progressing with their skills. With the temperatures being back up to the early 30’s this week the pool temperature has gone up around 3 degrees. CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS Harold, Carmen and the Life Education programme have been our main focus this week along with preparation for the arrival and welcome of Miss Ieti yesterday. The Life Education focus has been on food and nutrition and other body needs, all linked to our “Awesome Me” theme. At the end of last week I attended the Kahui Ako Leader’s meeting in Murchison where we fleshed out a little more of the goals for this year. At this point they align very closely with those being included in our strategic and annual plan this year. BUS: The Ministry of Education is currently reviewing bus routes, ours included in preparation for retendering the routes. I will be meeting here next week with the Ministry School Transport Review person. The Board has indicated its interest in taking up the provision of school transport itself. Take care of one another and share the aroha. Nga manaakitanga/With best wishes Peter King Principal School Newsletter: We have a newsletter mailing list.
