David has been working on his father’s collection of photo- graph albums relating to the 5th Battalion’s time during World War 2 and is gradually passing digital copies to the Museum. Those of you familiar with the layout of the display cases in the Museum may realise that the 5th Battalion are graphically illustrated in the large diorama depicting the D-Day Landing on Juno Beach. • THE FRIENDS of EXETER CATHEDRAL ANNUAL REPORT 2020 Pages 27–31 ‘1917 and ALL THAT’ by Jonathan Walker
THE FRIENDS OF EXETER CATHEDRAL ANNUAL REPORT 2020 Pages 27–31 ‘1917 AND ALL THAT’ by Jonathan Walker ‘1917 AND ALL THAT’ It is not often that Hollywood has a link with Exeter Cathedral, but Sir Sam Mendes’ new blockbuster film ‘1917’ has created one. The film, which features cameo roles by Colin Firth and Dominic Cumberbatch, is set on the Western Front during The Great War and tells the story of two messengers who have to cross a surreal landscape, recently abandoned by the Germans, in order to deliver a message to a British battalion. That message aims to halt the unit’s intended suicidal attack, for the Germans have laid a trap. To say more, would be a ‘spoiler’ but the unit portrayed in the film is the 2nd Battalion The Devonshire Regiment – and Exeter Cathedral remains the spiritual home of the ‘Devons’, encompassing their regimental chapel of St Edmund. Before looking at the close association between the Devons and the Cathedral, what was the story of the county regiment’s contribution to The Great War? As with most regiments before the outbreak of the conflict, the Devons maintained two regular battalions of professional soldiers, a reserve battalion and three battalions of territorial (part-time) soldiers. There was a gulf between these units, with Lord Kitchener complaining, somewhat unjustly, that the Territorials were a collection of ‘middle-aged professional men who were allowed to put on uniform and play at soldiers’. Professional jealousy apart, it was clear that the British Army would have to be rapidly expanded, as the first weeks of the war decimated the ranks of the ‘old contemptibles’.

  • History of the Riverside Hall Bampton the Riverside Hall in Bridge Terrace Bampton EX16 9LT Is One of Three “Village Halls”
History of the Riverside Hall Bampton The Riverside Hall in Bridge Terrace Bampton EX16 9LT is one of three “village halls” in Bampton (the others being the Community Hall and the LARC). Its early history is very much tied up with the presence of the Army in various guises. It was originally built in 1903 as a drill hall for volunteers in the days when England had only a very small Regular Army and most of the militia was provided by volunteers organised by local worthies. A volunteer regiment, the 11th of Foot, existed in Bampton in the 17th century. It was raised in the counties of Devon, Somerset, and Dorset to resist Monmouth’s rebellion. Being Protestants, they fought with the Prince of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne in 1688. The 11th of Foot (Fig 1 shows a soldier of the 11th Foot in 1742, the red coat displaying the regiment's green facings). It became the North Devon Regiment in 1782. The documents of the Duke of Somerset mention a Muster of Troops, Mr. Henry Ashford’s Company, at Bampton in April 1613. By the th st Fig 1: Soldier of the 18 century this had become the 1 Devon Militia. In the 1720’s there were 428 11th Foot men in the Hundred of Bampton liable for service in the militia. The North Devon Yeomanry was formed in 1794. The Yeomanry wore clothes made of cloth, whilst the militia men wore rough serge. An Order in the 1760’s required 500 private men to be raised in the Northern regiment, 39 of whom were to come from the Bampton Hundred.

  • The Rifles' History 1685 to 1800
The Rifles’ History “Pride of Regiment and love for the Regiment’s history and tradition is the sacred Ark of the Covenant on which the British soldier depends in battle and on which Britain, through him, has again and again survived and won through to victory” Sir Arthur Bryant The Rifles’ History can be traced back to 1685. 1685 to 1800 The Battle of Sedgemoor 6th July 1685 Like many of the modern regiments of the British Army, The Rifles can trace its roots back to the 17th and 18th Centuries. In fact the birth of The Rifles goes back to 1685, when – following the suppression of the ‘Monmouth Rebellion’, the Duke of Beaufort and the Earl of Huntingdon raised Regiments, which were to become the 11th (North Devon) and 13th (Somerset) Regiments of foot in order to secure King James II position on the throne. However, it was the British Army’s experience of irregular warfare in North America during the Seven Years War – as brought to the cinema screens by the film ‘Last of the Mohicans’ – that forced it to develop light infantry to counter the threat posed by their American, French and native Indian foes. The tactics of column and line used by line infantry were not suited to the close and wooded country found in North America where rebels used lighting tactics to attack vulnerable bodies of men as they marched across hostile territory. Initially colonists and Indians were used as scouts before two Regiments were raised in 1755 as light infantry. One of these was the 85th (Bucks Volunteers).
