Smoyer Adviser: Professor Deborah L. Tolman This study uses foodways theory to build knowledge about the lived experience of incarceration by analyzing women’s narratives about prison food and eating. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 formerly incarcerated women in New Haven, CT. The interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed. Findings explain the different ways that inmates collect, prepare, distribute and consume food, and the centrality of these activities to incarcerated life. By shedding light on these daily routines, the world of prison life comes into greater focus. Thematic analysis of the data further illuminates the prison experience by suggesting the positive and negative ways that food impacts inmate’s perceptions of themselves, their social networks and the State. Negative foodways humiliated the women, accentuated their powerlessness, and reinforced their perceptions of the State as nonsensical and apathetic towards their needs. Positive foodways illustrated the inmates’ capacity to resist State power, build/maintain relationships and construct positive self-narratives. Racialized foodways narratives began to reveal how food stories may be deployed to reinforce prison’s racial character and construct the identities of self and other. Foodways interventions to support the rehabilitative goals of correctional facilities are proposed. These data suggest that inmates want to build positive relationships and identities and that prison food systems could do more to help women realize these intentions. v DEDICATION For the women and girls across time and place who have been denied the opportunity to attend school.   • Prison Nursery Programs
    Prison Nursery Programs Executive Summary Prison nursery programs (PNPs) provide incarcerated mothers with educational training in child development and parenting skills, while also giving them an opportunity to bond with their newborns. Eight states currently have PNPs; their policies and practices vary from state to state. The Missouri Department of Corrections currently has procedures for incarcerated pregnant women, including prenatal care, counseling, delivery, and follow-up care. Missouri currently does not offer a PNP for incarcerated pregnant women. Highlights ● In Missouri, approximately 1% of the incarcerated woman population is pregnant. ● PNPs are associated with reductions in recidivism and improved maternal mental health. ● Children of mothers in PNPs have lower rates of depression, anxiety, and learning disabilities than babies who were unable to maintain their mother-child connection. ● State PNPs differ in qualification criteria, staffing, procedures, offerings, and length of stay. Limitations ● Studies on the effectiveness of PNPs for reducing recidivism, improving mental health, and child development outcomes for the long-term are still ongoing. ● The relationship between the length of participation in a PNP and reduction in recidivism, improvements in mental health, and child development outcomes remains unknown. ● Low-risk offenders are eligible for participation in PNP programs; it is unknown how a program would affect recidivism and mental health in high-risk offenders. ● Most incarcerated women are likely to be afflicted with poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, mental illnesses and will often return to those same situations once leaving the corrections system. o Community aftercare programs that can provide additional support to mothers being released may be necessary to ensure they transition successfully back to life outside the corrections system.

But prison inmates are famous for their amazing creativity — and when they're not making shivs and other improvised weapons, they're creating some truly bizarre food items. Here are 10 food items that you could make from scratch if you pulling a long stint at the big house. Prison inmates have a lot of time on their hands, and a strict schedule to follow. But they still find ways to do some cooking, sneaking out leftovers from the cafeteria and purchasing basic items from prison commissaries. Including these delicacies: 10. Correctional Cake Used to celebrate birthdays and the release of beloved prisoners, this cake is created using Oreo cookies, peanut butter, and M&Ms. The Oreo cookies are separated, with the cookie itself crushed and molded in the presence of water to create the layers of the cake. The creamy interior of the Oreos is used as icing. Peanut butter then becomes icing for another layer, with the "cake" topped off with broken up M&Ms. 9. No Bake Cheesecake Piper Kerman worked as a drug smuggler and money launderer for a West African drug kingpin. She wrote about her time in prison in her memoir, Orange Is The New Black . In the book, Kerman gives the recipe for a common prison cheesecake, made with graham crackers, lemon juice, vanilla pudding mix, stolen margarine, and coffee creamer. 8. Fried Chicken There is not a lot of information out there as to how prisoners accomplish this in their cells, but what is out there involves wiring a heating element into a plastic trashcan.

Bunz will celebrate his ninety-second birthday in November.1 Described by observers as ―feeble-looking‖ after the death of his wife in 2010, he requires a walker to take even a couple of steps, and needs a wheelchair to travel any distance of significant length.2 Yet he still is in better health than George Sanges, age 73, who suffers from cerebral palsy, has sagging skin that is listed as ―sallow,‖ takes multiple medications twice a day, and has recently been rushed to the emergency room for heart problems.3 And both of them are far more alert than Leon Baham, a 71-year-old man who has dementia and goes into delusional bouts of yearning for the company of his now-dead wife.4 On the surface, all of these elderly, ailing men have extremely sympathetic profiles. All three need intensive medical care.5 All three have unique physical and emotional needs that are inherent to growing older.6 All three appear to be the type of ―grandfatherly‖ figures to whom our society is historically taught to show the utmost compassion and concern. Yet all three of these individuals also have a huge component of their lives which would naturally tend to turn all thoughts of sympathy and care upside-down. They are all prisoners.7 Not low-level criminals, either, but violent felony offenders with significant sentences.
