COME CELEBRATE THE FOURTH OF JULY AT PYC! I always think of families being together, games, swimming pool, hot dogs and hamburgers, fireworks and fun when remembering the Fourth. We will have all of these things at PYC this Fourth except for fireworks, but you can view them from the lawn. Come spend the day with us—there will be fun for all. Crew of My Sharona June was a month for Regattas with the Gulfport to Pensacola race, Challenge Cup and Junior Olympics. Mother Nature did not cooperate very well for the first two and presented challenges of her own. Gulfport to Pensacola was raced with a stiff wind on the bow for the whole race. Normally, the faster boats finish in the early morning hours with most in by noon. This year we had boats finishing as late as 9:00 in the evening. But perseverance pays off—two cruising non spinnaker boats finished after the trophy presentation, but still Partial Crew of Kairos placed second and third. It speaks well for always staying the course. There was no wind and then too much wind for the Challenge Cup with Sunday’s races being cancelled due to Tropical Storm Debbie. Congratulations to George Gamble and crew (My Sharona) for placing third in Class A. and Lou Makarowski and crew (Kairos) for First in Cruising NS in the Gulfport to Pensacola race. Also congrats to our PYC team for placing Third overall in the Challenge Cup. A big thank you to all of our volunteers for their outstanding support of PYC Commodores at the FCA Luncheon both events! Have you gotten involved as a volunteer at PYC? If you have an interest in serving on one of our many committees, just let the committee chair know whose phone number is listed in this Jib Sheet. They would be excited to have you on their committee. Vice Commodore, Susan McKinnon, and her Facilities Committee continue to enhance our clubhouse. Have you noticed the new carpet in the lobby and grill room? This area has also received a fresh coat of paint and the combination Julie Connerley exchanges burgees at Chicago YC of paint and new carpet really looks great. Rear Commodore, Bob Dawkins, and the Membership Committee is working hard to attract new members—their efforts are paying off. In June, the Board approved seven new memberships—let’s keep the trend going. Gaining new members is the life blood of our club. Perhaps now is the time for you to bring that friend you were thinking about asking to a perspective new member night. Hope to see you at PYC on the Fourth. Kirby Smith & Joe Leccese and sons Top 3 photos by Julie Connerley -XO\¶‡3DJH3 VICE COMMODORE’S COMMENTS SUSAN MCKINNON The Club is the place to be in July. To start the PYC’s Springtime in Paris Party month, we will be celebrating the birth of our great nation on July Fourth. Inside the clubhouse, the kitchen staff will be busy preparing our favorite holiday food, while outside we will be enjoying lots of fun, old-fashioned games. When is the last time you, your children or grandchildren participated in a potato sack race, water balloon toss, or three-legged race? The fun and games on the lawn will begin at 3:00 p.m. Invite your family and friends and we’ll see you there!! Also, plan to attend the Family Fun Day in August. Like the fun and games on July Fourth, we will gather outside for an enjoyable day of “end of summer” activities. Recent Tropical Storm Debby has once again reminded us how vulnerable we are on the Gulf Coast. This early storm preempted many boat owners in our Marina to seek shelter in calmer waters. Thank you to all who proactively moved their boats. From our beautiful vista on the mouth of Bayou Chico to Pensacola Bay, we are at the mercy of the turbulent weather of hurricane season. Is it time to move that boat from the driveway or yard? PYC has a great place to store your boat! Affordable slips are available in dry storage. Please see our dock master, Greg Spitzer, for details. PYC MARINA HURRICANE PREPARDEDNESS by Lee Hargrove

The early prediction for the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season is for an active season with an above average number of storms. Regardless of the predictions or their accuracy, PYC must be ready and all marina tenants should have a plan in place for removing their boats from the PYC marina. If a marina tenant is out of town or lives outside of the PYC area they must have someone designated to accept responsibility to remove and secure their boat in another location. The following actions are to be taken when the Commodore activates our “Hurricane Plan” due to the anticipated landfall of a hurricane or strong tropical storm in our area: 1. The PYC DOCK MASTER will immediately call all wet slip tenants and advise them of the need to remove their boats from the marina within 24 hours. No boats will be allowed to remain in the marina during a hurricane or tropical storm. Electrical service will be one of the first things to be shut off, allowing time to remove the service pedestals. Following the 24-hour boat removal period, the dock boards will be removed. 2. Boats in dry storage do not have to be removed. However, masts must be taken down and the boat properly secured to ground anchors. 3. A contractor has been engaged to remove the dock boards in the marina but any volunteers who can help with the process are welcome. Please call the office and let us know if you are willing to help. All tenants are requested to insure that their Hurricane Plan is up-to-date.

Away from our bay, Dave Hoffman and five others spent 12 days in May sailing the Spanish Balearic Islands aboard a Kaufman 47. The cruise began in Barcelona followed by several stops along the north shore of Mallorca and Ibiza before ending in Palma. Dave enjoyed the spectacular mountainous coast, the wonderful harbors with old stone walled cities, the deep blue water of the Mediterranean and the great food in many outdoor waterfront tapas cafes. On June 4, a surprise birthday package made its appearance for Erin Sammis in the form of a sweet baby girl. Husband Adam commented, “ What a wonderful birthday present for my beautiful wife Erin, the arrival of our daughter Elizabeth Kelley Sammis!” This past month the stork also paid a visit to Texas. Larry and Ann-Marie Bowyer took time away from cruising the Caribbean to welcome their new grandson, Grant Alan Bowyer into the family. Congratulations to the Bowyer family! Congratulations also go to the Moraski family on the marriage of Andrew Moraski who married his sweetheart Kelsey in lovely mountain top ceremony in the Colorado last month. Andrew is the son of Past Commodore Roger Moraski and his wife, Betsy. Beloved Past Commodore William Troendle passed away this month. We offer our condolences to Beverly Troendle and family for their loss.

Page ‡-XO\¶ NOTES FF TA S CRUISER’S CORNER JIM & LINDA OYLER Stephen Suchy, General Manager General Suchy, Stephen PYC’s Challenge Cup Competitors Even without an “official” raft-up during the month of May, the cruisers stayed quite busy. Many of the regulars were involved in Regatta al Sol as race committee, racers, or racer chasers. The island was delightful as always, and a good time was had by all. The picture of Ron Bray, Carlos Melville, and Jim Oyler in heavy black mustaches on the cover of last month’s Jib Sheet has raised many questions. The race committee recognized everyone who has been involved in at least ten Regatta al Sols by inducting them as charter members into the Vallista Society. The wearing of the mustache was part of that ceremony. New members will be inducted at each Regatta al Sol as they complete their tenth race to Mexico.

The Memorial Day raft-up at Big Sabine was quite a hit. Many thanks to Bob Holmes for planning and conducting this event! Ten boats from PYC enjoyed all or part of the holiday weekend in Big Sabine. We understand Bob is writing the script for a new movie “Snakes in Dinghies”. We always welcome guests at our raft-ups, but snakes I don’t think so. From all accounts the camaraderie was great but the Eagle concert on the beach was the hit of the weekend. Thanks, Bob for a job well done.

Unfortunately the June raft-up was a total wash out. We thought long and hard before we cancelled. I don’t think a raft-up has ever been cancelled before and we hated to set a precedent.
