Québec, Canada © André-Philippe Drapeau Picard, 2016 Recolonisation des mares d’un fen en restauration par les araignées et les dytiques Mémoire André-Philippe Drapeau Picard Sous la direction de : Line Rochefort, directrice de recherche Maxim Larrivée, codirecteur de recherche Résumé La technique du transfert muscinal, largement appliquée pour la restauration des tourbières perturbées par l’extraction de la tourbe en Amérique du Nord, vise le retour d’un couvert végétal dominé par des mousses accumulatrices de tourbe. Bien qu’efficace en ce sens, l’approche ne restaure pas l’hétérogénéité des habitats qui supportent la grande biodiversité des tourbières naturelles. Les mares de tourbière sont des habitats auxquels une faune et une flore caractéristiques sont associées et qui contribuent significativement à la biodiversité des tourbières. La création de mares dans les tourbières restaurées devrait y augmenter l’hétérogénéité des habitats et, ainsi, la biodiversité. Dans virtuellement tous les écosystèmes, les arthropodes sont diversifiés et abondants, et ils sont sensibles aux variations environnementales à une échelle fine, ce qui fait d’eux des indicateurs écologiques intéressants. Pour ce projet, 21 mares réparties dans deux classes de profondeur (profondes et peu profondes) et trois classes de végétation (mousses, arbustes et plantes graminoïdes) ont été aménagées lors de la restauration d’une tourbière minérotrophe dans la région du Bas-Saint-Laurent. Les mares de quatre tourbières des environs ont été inventoriées en tant qu’écosystème de référence. Les araignées (Araneae) et les dytiques (Coleoptera : Dytiscidae) ont été échantillonnés sur les berges et dans les mares à l’aide de pièges-fosses et de nasses, respectivement. Pour voir quelles variables environnementales ont une influence sur les assemblages d’arthropodes, ces derniers ont été comparés, à l’aide d’analyses multivariables, entre les mares du milieu restauré et celles de l’écosystème de référence. Des trois types de végétation à l’essai, les mares artificielles aménagées de plantes graminoïdes présentaient une arachnofaune et un microenvironnement plus similaires à l’écosystème de référence. La diversité des dytiques des mares artificielles peu profondes était similaire à celle de l’écosystème de référence. La création de mares de profondeurs variables et l’introduction d’une végétation de type graminoïde sur les berges est recommandée afin d’optimiser le retour d’une biodiversité semblable à celle de l’écosystème de référence dans les fens en restauration. iii Abstract The moss layer transfer technique, widely used for peatland restoration after peat extraction in North America, aims to facilitate plant cover re-establishment dominated by peat-accumulating mosses. Efficient in that regard, the approach fails to restore habitat heterogeneity that supports the high biodiversity of natural peatlands. Peatland pools are habitats with an associated characteristic fauna and flora, contributing significantly to peatland biodiversity. In restored peatlands, man-made pools should increase habitat heterogeneity and thus, species diversity. In virtually all ecosystems, arthropods are diverse and abundant, and they are sensitive to fine-scale environmental changes, making them relevant as ecological indicators. To assess how pools should be designed in order to facilitate arthropod recolonization, 21 pools distributed in two depth classes (deep and shallow) and three vegetation classes (mosses, shrubs and graminoid plants) were designed in a restored fen in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Four natural fens with pools of the same region were assessed as reference ecosystem. Spiders (Araneae) and predacious diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) were sampled around and within pools using pitfall traps and funnel minnow traps, respectively. In order to determine how treatments and measured environmental variables influence arthropod assemblages, the later were compared, using multivariate analysis, between pools in the restored and reference ecosystems. Of the three vegetation types tested, man-made pools with graminoid plants showed an arachnofauna and a microenvironment more similar to the reference ecosystem. Dytiscid diversity of shallow man-made pools was similar to that of reference ecosystem. The creation of pools of variable depth and the introduction of graminoid-type vegetation on pool margins is recommended in restored fens in order to optimize the return of a biodiversity similar to Ross This work examined the importance of structural complexity of habitat, availability of prey, and competition with ants as factors influencing the abundance and community composition of arboreal spiders in western Oregon. In 1993, I compared the spider communities of several host-tree species which have different branch structure. I also assessed the importance of several habitat variables as predictors of spider abundance and diversity on and among individual tree species. The greatest abundance and species richness of spiders per 1-m-long branch tips were found on structurally more complex tree species, including Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirbel) Franco and noble fir, Abies procera Rehder. Spider densities, species richness and diversity positively correlated with the amount of foliage, branch twigs and prey densities on individual tree species. The amount of branch twigs alone explained almost 70% of the variation in the total spider abundance across five tree species. In 1994, I experimentally tested the importance of needle density and branching complexity of Douglas-fir branches on the abundance and community structure of spiders and their potential prey organisms. This was accomplished by either removing needles, by thinning branches or by tying branches. Tying branches resulted in a significant increase in the abundance of spiders and their prey. Densities of spiders and their prey were reduced by removal of needles and thinning.

Because it is positioned on the ecotone between tundra and boreal forest, the Churchill area is a strategic locality for the analysis of shifts in faunal composition. This fact has motivated the effort to develop a comprehensive biodiversity inventory for the Churchill region by coupling DNA barcoding with morphological studies. The present study represents one element of this effort; it focuses on analysis of the spider fauna at Churchill. Results: 198 species were detected among 2704 spiders analyzed, tripling the count for the Churchill region. Estimates of overall diversity suggest that another 10–20 species await detection. Most species displayed little intraspecific sequence variation (maximum <1%) in the barcode region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, but four species showed considerably higher values (maximum = 4.1-6.2%), suggesting cryptic species. All recognized species possessed a distinct haplotype array at COI with nearest-neighbour interspecific distances averaging 8.57%. Three species new to Canada were detected: Robertus lyrifer (Theridiidae), Baryphyma trifrons (Linyphiidae), and Satilatlas monticola (Linyphiidae). The first two species may represent human-mediated introductions linked to the port in Churchill, but the other species represents a range extension from the USA.

Studie probíhala na území významného krajinného prvku U Kříţe v Brně Starém Lískovci. Studované území se skládá ze třech typů biotopů: listnatý les, křoviny a monokultura švestek. Pavouci byli získáváni pomocí sklepávání. U zkoumaných druhů byly porovnávány různé dimenze niky. Prostorová nika byla zkoumána na základě mikro- aţ makrobiotopových preferencí. Trofická nika byla zkoumána na základě velikosti a typu přirozené kořisti a pomocí laboratorních experimentů potravních preferencí. Časová nika byla zkoumána na základě fenologie jednotlivých druhů. Studované druhy se lišily v prostorové a trofické nice.

In this thesis we contribute to the knowledge of dispersal, by studying both ecological and evolutionary aspects of spider dispersal in fragmented grey dunes.     AWENDA PROVINCIAL PARK One Malaise trap was deployed at Awenda Provincial Park in 2014 (44.82534, -79.98458, 231m ASL; Figure 1). This trap collected arthropods for twenty weeks from April 29 – September 19, 2014. All 10 Malaise trap samples were processed; every other sample was analyzed using the individual specimen protocol while the second half was analyzed via bulk analysis. A total of 3029 BINs were obtained. Over half the BINs captured were flies (Diptera), followed by bees, ants and wasps (Hymenoptera), moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera), and true bugs (Hemiptera; Figure 2). We brengen hulde aan een man die veel gegeven heeft voor de arachnologie in het algemeen en meer specifiek voor onze vereniging. Jean-Pierre is altijd een belangrijke pion geweest in het bestaan van ARABEL. Hij was medestichter van de “Werkgroep ARABEL” in 1976 en op zijn aanraden werd gestart met het publiceren van de “Nieuwsbrief” in 1986, het jaar waarin ook ARABEL een officiële vzw werd. Hij is eindredacteur van de “Nieuwsbrief” geweest van 1990 tot en met 2002. Sinds het ontstaan van onze vereniging is Jean-Pierre achtereenvolgens penningmeester geweest van 1986 tot en met 1989, ondervoorzitter van 1990 tot en met 1995 om uiteindelijk voorzitter te worden van 1996 tot en met 1999. Pas in 2003 gaf hij zijn fakkel als bestuurslid over aan de “jeugd”. Dit afscheid is des te erger omdat Jean- Pierre er na 6 jaar afwezigheid terug een lap ging op geven, door opnieuw bestuurslid te worden in 2009 en aldus verkozen werd als Secretaris. Alle artikels in dit nummer opgenomen worden naar hem opgedragen. Jean-Pierre Maelfait nous a quitté le 6 février de cette année. Nous rendons hommage à un homme qui a beaucoup donné dans sa vie pour l’arachnologie en général et plus particulièrement pour Arabel. Jean-Pierre a toujours été un pion important dans la vie de notre Société.

Variation in species richness at the landscape scale is an important consideration in con- servation planning and natural resource management. To assess the ability of rapid inventory techniques to estimate local species richness, three collectors sampled the spider fauna of a "wilderness" cove forest in the southern Appalachians for 133 person-hours during September and early October 1991 using four methods: aerial hand collecting, ground hand collecting, beating, and leaf litter extraction. Eighty-nine species in 64 genera and 19 families were found. To these data we applied various statistical techniques (lognormal, Poisson lognormal, Chao 1, Chao 2, jackknife, and species accumulation curve) to estimate the number of species present as adults at this site. Estimates clustered between roughly 100-130 species with an outlier (Poisson lognormal) at 182 species. We compare these estimates to those from Bolivian tropical forest sites sampled in much the same way but less intensively. We discuss the biases and errors such estimates may entail and their utility for inventory design. We also assess the effects of method, time of day and collector on the number of adults, number of species and taxonomic composition of the samples and discuss the nature and importance of such effects. Method, collector and method-time of day interaction significantly affected the numbers of adults and species per sample; and each of the four methods collected clearly different sets of species.
