The Magic Finger Lesson Decision Alley plan Overview Learning objective • To be able to present a reasoned argument. Learning outcome • To enter a debate for or against killing wildlife for food or resources. Book reference • The Magic Finger. Preparation • Prior to the lesson, the children have researched the killing of animals for various ends in different countries (e.g. elephants for ivory, lions for skin, fox-hunting and so on). Starter • Summarise the moral of The Magic Finger. • Recap main points from the book through quickfire questions: - Why do Mr and Mrs Gregg want to shoot ducks at the beginning of the story? - Why is the Girl against shooting ducks? Main teaching activity • Students divide into groups. Some groups are for killing wildlife and others against killing wildlife. They prepare their arguments. • Make a decision alley. The children stand in two lines facing each other. One line represents for, and the other against. One child walks between the two lines (the alley) and while walking, the children in the two lines state reasons for or against the argument. Group or independent activity • Run a class debate. There is one line of for, and another against. One person from each side is allowed to speak for 1 minute giving their arguments. Then volunteers can continue to debate the issue back and forth. Plenary • Students vote on their ideas. Other activities • Write a persuasive speech for or against killing wildlife for certain ends. • Make a poster to persuade people not to kill animals for certain ends. So when her neighbours the Greggs go shooting, her magic finger teaches them a lesson they'll never forget In the The Magic Finger, an unnamed eight-year-old girl tells the story of her neighbours, the Gregg family. The Greggs The Magic Finger to The Magic Finger, but the girl can't stand to see animals killed just for fun. Her sense of injustice makes her angry and through her anger she develops a special power - not dissimilar to Matilda Wormwood, another of Roald's young female protagonists. Roald was The Magic Finger much against animal cruelty and his story reflects this, as the girl turns the tables on the Greggs and their love of hunting. After Roald had finished his publishers, wary of offending the powerful US gun lobby, sat on the manuscript until their option to publish had expired. I can't stand hunting. I just can't stand it. It doesn't seem right to me that men and boys should kill animals just for the fun they get The Magic Finger of it.

The narrative voice in Roald Dahl’s children’s and adult books Laura VIÑAS VALLE Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha Departamento de Filología Moderna [email protected] Recibido: noviembre 2007 Aceptado: abril 2008 ABSTRACT This article contends that Roald Dahl does not write separately and distinctly for children and adults and that differences respond mostly to the varied emphasis placed on the features that make up his books. The narrative voice that appears both in his adult and children’s books suggest continuity rather than a split in his oeuvre. My examination shows that dissimilarities between his adult and children narrators amount to the different stress he places on the features that conform to the narrative voice he constructs. Thus, depending on the way Dahl understands ‘children’s literature’ or ‘adult books’ to be, he will put more or less emphasis on these particular narrative aspects. La voz narrativa de Roald Dahl en los libros para niños y adultos RESUMEN Este artículo explora las características de la voz del narrador en los libros para niños y para adultos de Roald Dahl. Se demuestra cómo en estos dos campos literarios aparentemente dispares, hay una serie de elementos comunes que sugieren una gradación en el énfasis que el autor pone en los aspectos particulares que caracterizan al narrador. Esta diferencia de énfasis responde a la concepción que tiene el autor de ‘literatura infantil’ y ‘literatura para adultos’. Si bien la crítica insiste en presentar a Dahl como un autor con dos cabezas, defendemos aquí una continuidad a lo largo de su obra y no una ruptura cuando se trata de escribir para lectores de distintas edades.
