RECTOR'S REFLECTION

“The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage.” Psalm 16, v. 6

The beauty of Clarke Parish, and the sense that we are on holy ground when we stand (or sit, or kneel) at St. Mary’s, or at Grace Church, has come upon all of us who have the privilege of worshiping or serving God here from time to time.

On Rogation Sunday, the sixth Sunday of Easter, we will enact together an ancient practice called “.” However, we will call it “Blessing the Bounds.” We will bring staffs and walking sticks, and walk around the perimeter (mostly the sidewalk on Buckmarsh) of St. Mary’s at the 9 a.m. service, and around the perimeter of Grace at the 11 a.m. service. (Technically, we should be walking around the entire campus, including the chapel and the parish hall; however, that would take more time than we normally have on a Sunday.)

The purpose of such a practice used to be to define the boundaries of the parish, and to literally “beat the bushes” to drive out evil spirits. In our day, the purpose is to give thanks for the blessings we have in the land and buildings of Clarke Parish, and to ask God to bless all our efforts to serve God and God’s people here in Berryville, and in the larger world. Another purpose is to put us in touch with our Anglican heritage. Traditionally, Rogation days serve the purpose of asking God for successful planting and good harvest; they are very appropriate for a county that is still largely agricultural. So, we will ask blessings for all growing things, our own and our neighbors’.

Peace be with you, Georgia+

CHURCH NEWS BISHOP VISITATION & CONFIRMATION SUNDAY AT CLARKE PARISH - The Rt. Rev. Susan Goff, Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, visited Clarke Parish on Sunday, April 15th and presided at a combined 10:15 service where we celebrated Holy Eucharist together and witnessed the Confirmation of 11 of our Sunday School students.

Together we welcomed into Christ's one, holy, catholic and apostolic church: Page Spotswood Bacon, Mary McKenzie Herndon, Grace Hollandsworth Koontz, Charlotte Leigh Maiberger, Molly Radford McFillen, Diane Azella Yvonne Preston, Isreal Terrence Preston, Jr., Isabelle Grace Simond, Charlotte Anne Smith, Ellen Elizabeth Smith and Mitchell Carlisle Sours.

After the service, a bontiful luncheon was enjoyed by many in the Fellowship Hall. Special thanks is extended to everyone that contributed their time, talent and treasure to make the day a success...Both Bishop Goff AND the confirmands deserved the celebration and it was wonderful!

We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Tracy & Bill Smith for their unending and faithful dedication to the church, our Sunday School program, and this particular group of young people. Together, Bill & Tracy have been working with these students for the past two years in Confirmation class each week helping prepare them for the commitment they made to Christ, the church and themselves last Sunday. Thank you both so very much! To see more picture from Bishop Goff's visit and Confirmation Sunday, please visit our Facebook page (Grace Episcopal Church)

DINNER & THEATER NIGHT! On Friday, April 13th, a large contingent of parishioners and friends gathered in the Parish Hall at 5:30 pm for an Italian Feast BEFORE heading to Clarke Co. High School for the Opening Night performance of the spring musical, The Little Mermaid. It was a fun evening for everyone! The dinner was delicious and the play was 'positOOvely' awesome! This was our third year arranging this special outing - the church buys a block of tickets and reserved seating in advance of the performance for those wishing to attend. So far we've seen Seussical, The Sound of Music, and The Little Mermaid - all were really good productions put on by amazingly talented young actors. We don't know what next's years spring musical will be yet, but you can rest assured that Clarke Parish will again be there in force to support our local community.
