GETTING HERE Trafalgar Studios is a theatre in Central London. We have two performance spaces inside known as Studio 1 and Studio 2. You can find a flat pavement on Spring Gardens, the street parallel to Whitehall. The closest train stations to the Trafalgar Studios are Charing Cross Station (4 min walk) and Waterloo Station (17 min walk via the Golden Jubilee Bridge). The closest tube stations are Charing Cross (1 min walk), then Leicester Square (8 min walk) and Westminster (9 min walk). There are also few underground car parks near the venue. Four guides, of which this is one, deal with the types of site included on Historic England’s Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England which is a constituent part of the National Heritage List for England. The Eidophusikon and Spring Gardens
1896. Some consider this to be the first cinema in England as its use was solely for film shows, although other events took place here when not occupied by the cinematograph. As with Alexandra Palace, it was taken over by the military during World War I. In 1923 the National Hall was added and in 1929 the Empire Hall. The role of the magic lantern here has still to be determined. The last on the list of Victorian halls is Olympia’s sister hall, Earl’s Court. 7, 8 This began its existence as an open-air pleasure ground for outdoor activities. The site had been acquired by J.R. Whiteley in 1887. Here was erected the first ferris wheel seen in England (as shown in the illustration) – an early forerunner of the London Eye. Here too was staged ‘Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show’ and in 1895 the ‘Empire of India Exhibition’ where Robert Paul exhibited his Kinetoscopes (a peepshow device) from 27 May to 26 October when some of the first films made in this country were seen. The present building was erected in 1937 and, at the time, was the largest reinforced-concrete building in Europe. The site covers 12 acres and was used for public exhibitions such as the Boat Show, Earl’s Court became a complex of Earl’s Court began as an Royal Tournament and Royal Smithfield Show. Demolition work began at the end of exhibition buildings by the end of the open-air pleasure ground in 1887 19th century (Barnes Archive) 2014 to make way for a residential and retail development.

the language of light 0193 - 10 SPRING GARDENS Lighting Design - Facade Lighting Lighting Design - Rev G 12/03/2021 1 the language of light 10 SPRING GARDENS Introduction 10 Spring Gardens is a 70’s building along the Mall within the St James Conservation Area. The site is in close proximity to Trafalgar Square, Haymarket, St James’s Park and Whitehall. Studio 29 is assigned as a lighting designer for this alteration project. Our goal is to create a lighting scheme that highlight the building’s architectural features, to improve the site’s environment and to create a safe and inviting atmosphere surrounding the building. The adjacent East and West facades of Carlton House Terrace are brightly lit using powerful wide beam floodlights in a very warm white light. The facade lighting to Spring Gardens and Carlton House terrace highlights the verticality of the architecture with a narrow beam, warm white LED light source located at first floor level, which replace existing floodlights. Mounted directly below the uplights are very wide beam downlights iluminating the public realm, these downlights are identical to the uplights but with different optics to give a softer ambiant feel to the piazza while maintaining a level of security around the base of the building. The 7th floor of Spring Gardens has small uplights located within the balcony to highlight the internal pockets at the top of the building. Carlton House Terrace only has uplighitng to the facade due to the portico entrance which also has uplighting to the inner face of the columns. The connecting staircase and passageway between the Piazza and Carlton House Terrace has been made a strong feature with the addition of a custom illuminated handrail which mimics adjacent Duke of York Staircase.
