Burleson Wounded Albemarle Man In Dangerous Condition-Was Shot Accidentally Special to Daily News Albemarle, Oct 24 – 1931 Luther Burleson lies in Yadkin hospital tonight dangerously wounded as the result of a rifle shot which was accidentally fired into the back of his head about noon today. Burleson, about 28, was riding on a load of hay with his nephew when the nephew Nelson Burleson) accidentally knocked a rifle on the hay in such a manner that it fired the bullet that lodged in Burleson's head. The extent of his injuries has not been learned.

May Re-Open Suit Attorneys Want Boy's Trial Moved to Juvenile Court Albemarle, Dec 4 - (AP) Attorneys for 13 year old Nelson Burleson who is charged with killing his uncle after a quarrel over a watermelon October 24 today moved to reopen the case. They cited the defendant's age and argued the case should be remanded to juvenile court. The board was bound to Superior Court Monday when probably cause was found in Stanly County recorder's court. Albert Eudy, a witness at the arraignment, said Nelson came to his house a short while before the shooting and said his Uncle, Luther Burleson, whipped him after a quarrel over a watermelon. Eudy reported Nelson said he was going to shoot the man. Luther Burleson was shot to death as he and his nephew, with Jonah Burleson - Nelson's father - were riding on a load of hay near here.

I don't have any more information about this tragic incident but I found Nelson Burleson in the 1940 U.S. Census serving time in Cabarrus County NC State Prison Camp. According to this census, he was still living in Albemarle, Stanly County, NC in 1935 so he must have entered the prison sometime between 1936-1940. It also states that he is married. He married Inez Leonard.

William Cornelius and Mary Catherine Boone Burleson had a large family of 10 children, 7 boys and 3 girls. Their first child, Arthur Burleson, died as an infant. Luther's death was the next death in the family that I'm aware of. Most of the children scattered. William Cornelius Burleson died 1/10/1935 in Stanly County, NC of "creeping paralysis". Mary Catherine "Kate" Boone Burleson died 5/29/1950 in Stanly County, NC. They are buried at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Frog Pond, Stanly County, NC with Arthur Burleson (their infant son) and Luther Martin Burleson.

Jonah Richardson Burleson, Nelson's father, died 7/24/1963 Wadesboro, Anson County, NC in a tragic truck collision. He was working as a produce salesman and the accident occurred while he was working, evidently driving a produce truck. He died of head injuries at the age of 70 yrs old. His wife, Mary Elizabeth Howard Burleson, Nelson's mother died 9/7/1982 in Stanly County, NC.

What happened to Nelson Burleson after he got out of prison? What I know comes from his death certificate. He died 12/21/1970 in the Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, Guilford County, NC. He was evidently living in Eden, Rockingham County, NC with his wife, Inez Leonard Burleson, at the time. He also died of a tragic accident. A rock pile fell on him. He lasted 5 days but died of kidney and liver failure, shock, blood loss, fractured pelvis, ruptured bladder and collapsed lung. He was only 52 yrs old. He was buried at the Fairview Cemetery, Albemarle, Stanly County, NC.

A pneumothorax can be caused by a blunt or penetrating chest injury, certain medical procedures involving your lungs or damage from underlying lung disease. His death certificate did not indicate that the accident happened at work.

It seems his father was with the two and may be why it was reported as an accident at first. Sharon Harris To; John Burleson

751 Annual Reunion and Board of Directors meeting at Bastrop By John H. Burleson On 10th April the Burleson Family Association held it’s annual Reunion and Board of Directors meeting at Bastrop Texas. Bastrop has a historical connection to the Burleson family. In 1830 Edward Burleson and his extended family settled there on the Colorado River. James Burleson the father of Edward and his brother Joseph along with several of their sons and son-in-laws also came to the small Spanish village of Mina (later became known as Bastrop). Spanish soldiers lived temporarily at the current site of Bastrop as early as 1804, when a fort was established where the Old Road crossed the Colorado River and named Puesta del Colorado. Known as the "Old Indian Fighter", Edward Burleson was a veteran of the War of 1812 and had served in the and Texas militias. In October 1835 he was appointed a Lieutenant Colonel in the Texas army and served under Stephen F. Austin in the opening stages of the . During the Siege of Béxar, Burleson served as the second-in-command to Gen. Stephen F. Austin, and in November, 1835 he was elected Major General of Texas Volunteers and took command of the volunteer army besieging San Antonio de Béxar and received the surrender of Mexican General Martín Perfecto de Cos. After expelling the Mexican Army south of the Rio Grange River, Gen Edward Burleson ordered the victorious Texas Militia disbanded and to return home. His orders was for a small detachment to be left behind to destroy the cannons left by the Mexicans at the fortified church called the Alamo. That order was not followed by the attachment left behind commanded by Capt Wm Travis, you know the rest of that story. In March, he was appointed a Colonel of Texas Regulars and led the First Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the and at the . At the battle of San Jacinto Col Edward Burleson was the first horseman to cross the Mexican barricade, leading the Infantry. He later served as Vice President with President Sam of the Texas Republic. That is a short biography of Edwards service but the whole story would take more pages than I have today. Edwards father Capt. James Burleson was a first cousin to our Isaac Burlison Sr of Montgomery Co NC. Isaac Burlison Sr fought in the American Revolution here on Rocky River, remained here on Little Bear Creek and his descendants are here today. Isaac’s uncle Aaron Burlison of the Washington Co NC Will moved from Rocky River after 1763 and moved to Sandy Run Creek of the Broad River. He then moved to the Watauga Settlements in 1774. Capt. James was born on the frontier in 1775. Aaron Burlison was killed by Indians in 1782 and his family returned back to the safety of Sandy Run Creek where Joseph and James matured and married. Edward was born in Buncombe Co NC in 1798. The Burleson Families of Joseph and James moved to , , Missouri and then to Texas. This trip to Bastrop was an opportunity to walk the same ground as our famous cousins and to visit with some of our Texas cousins again. The BFA Reunion went well except for one sad event. We learned that Helen Burleson Kelso the long time Editor of the BFA Bulletin passed away at her home on Sunday the last day of the Reunion. She was a dear friend and I will miss her. She set the standard for recording our Burleson History and I do not think anyone can fill her shoes.

This was our first night out, very historical in Bastrop downtown district. 752 Joe Burleson

753 This BFA Reunion was different than last years, usually my wife Nancy and I make the trip to the reunions alone. This year our own J D Burleson President of the Stanly County Burleson Family Research Group took the time off from work and flew down to Bastrop. J D is a past Director of the BFA and he was able to renew some old acquaints. One event we all enjoyed was the trip to a real Texas Barbeque restaurant. I know I enjoyed the Brisket but J D and I agree that the restaurant would change their menu if they every had the opportunity to eat at any of our Lexington Pork Barbeque restaurants. We enjoyed the Old Town section of Bastrop that is the old original wooden buildings of the town that have been converted into Restaurants and gift Shops. They are located along the Colorado River bank that has a scenic walk way. The trip to Texas was not all fun and relaxation. J D and I had been working on a presentation on the incorrect information in the Burleson History. I had written the article and J D and his son Wesley spent many hours in making a Power Point presentation. The BFA had requested that we present the program at the Reunion. I was given a two hour block on Friday evening, of course the subject was A Second Look at The Burleson History as told by Dr Rufus C Burleson since I was telling what is incorrect with todays Burleson History. J D must be commanded for running the Power Point as well as videoing the presentation. All I had to do was read and repeat “there was no Aaron I of Wales as told by Dr Rufus C Burleson”. We had another two hour block on Saturday which went well. My program was the continuation of “A Second Look” It was hard to know if the audience was listening or if they disagreed with my message. I tried a test, I offered a two dollar bill to the first person to produced a single document that would prove that an Aaron Burleson I of Wales ever existed as described by Dr Rufus C Burleson. I got a few laughs but no one has asked to collect my two dollar bill yet. I feel I did changed some minds, all I need to do now is to change the thousands of minds on Ancestry.Com. When I arrived in Austin, pickup my rental car, and departed the airport I started to stop and check my GPS to find out how to get to Bastrop. Then I saw a sign that said 20 miles to Bastrop so I continued on to Bastrop. I stopped to get something to eat and to check my GPS and the first directions was to turn on Ed Burleson Lane, I knew I was close.

It would not be a BFA Reunion without going to a old cemetery.
