2 PREAMBLE

Dear young participants and reader of this program, for 25 years now young people are engaged on the way of „go4peace“. Spark of this peace- acting was the Bal- kan war from 1992- 1995. After this war – in 1996 – the first „pioneers” started going this way with the motto „hands for peace – give peace hands” to start reconstruction first in northern Bosnia, later in Sarajevo with young Europeans. Guiding theme for this were words right from the heart of the LORD: „Don’t stop giving” or „Be Family!” From this divided life, the youth cen- tre in Sarajevo named „Ivan Pavao II” was established where we came together in remembrance of the start of World War I 100 years ago last year. There, we sent out a peace message out to the world while performing with the arts group Gen- Rosso the musical „streetlight” with about 180 young Europe- ans. Our Pope Francis visited the youth centre in Sarajevo on June 6th 2015 and encouraged them to live together vividly and peacefully with the following statement: „You have an im- portant mission: to never build walls, but bridges!” Then it was clear: This way will go on! After the go4peace camp in

3 Kamen, Germany in 2015, where young adults from 27 dif- ferent nations participated and the camps in Shkodra 2017 and Koszalin 2018 we are happy to be in Brno this year.

With more than 100 participants from Europe and the entire world, we can set a living example at the go4peace camp 2019 in Brno – in the heart of Europe – against fighting and images of the „enemy”. There is no place for such things in our hearts. With good will and hope we want to stand up for viewing strangers as brothers and sisters. I want to thank all those who invested much time, energy, money and prayers for this camp. A special „Thank you” goes out to all Teenagers and students from Brno, who made the camp possible due to their unstoppable dedication for it. You are the living hope for Europe! May we all be enriched with the message from young, devoted adults – arriving from 15 different nations – pictured at the „go4peace-Agape” in Brno on July 27th with all our homeless brothers and sisters from Brno. Together we impersonate the motto „Let’s go4peace!“

Many greetings to all of you

Fr. Meinolf Wacker initiator of „go4peace”

4 WELCOME IN THE DIOCESE OF BRNO

My dear young friends,

it is a huge joy for me to welcome you all here in our diocese of Brno.

You have decided to go to Interna- tional youth camp go4peace in Brno, where you want to build bridges of understanding between different people. You will do it in different ways of love that you will live in our city. Let it help you in your growth, so when you leave you can say: they know us about fruits, fruit that is good. As Jesus says: Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, … (Matthew 7:17). The fruit that you will bring to your home and fruit that will grow in Brno thanks to you.

I wish you a blessed summer and a lot of en- ergy to building bridges.

Be sure that I am going to pray for each one of you!

Mgr. Roman Kubin

The most visited sights of the city include the Špilberk castle and fortress and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on

14 PRAYER FOR EUROPE

Father of man- kind, Lord of History. Look upon this continent to which you sent philosophers, lawgivers and people endowed with wisdom, precursors of that faith in your Son, fallen and risen. Look at these people evangelised by Peter and Paul, by prophets, monks and saints. Look at these regions drenched in the blood of martyrs, moved by the voice of reformers. Look at these people linked by so many bonds and ties, yet divided by hatred and war. Assist us in committing ourselves to a Europe of the Spirit, founded not just on economic treaties, but, also on values which are human and eternal; a Europe capable of ethnic and ecumenical reconciliation, quick to wel- come the stranger, respectful of human dignity. Give us confidence to see it as our duty to encourage and promote un- derstanding between peoples, which provides for all continents justice and bread, liberty and peace. AMEN Carlo Maria Cardinal MARTINI (1927-2012)

25 FINAL AGAPE FOR POOR PEOPLE Saturday 27. 7. 2019 terrace in front of L´Eau Vive restaurant 12:00 – 14:30

At the end of the camp we will provide a lunch and meeting with poor people. They are very different from each other – social back- ground, age, life story, homeless people. Some of them have dogs to be their trouble partner and we will provide an agape and accompa- nying program.

It is not about how good we are that we do something like this, but we want to realize the worth of each person and it doesn’t de- pend on what a problem they have. We believe that the gathering is going to be a mutual enrichment.

26 The commu- nity Sant´ Egidio will help us with organi- zation because they have great experience with this type of event – once per week food for poor people and sometimes even a picnic in a park. The background is provided by nuns of L´Eau Vive community. They have a restaurant in front of the public terrace

on which the gathering is going to be.

32 TIPS FOR VISITING BRNO

Špilberk Fortress

The land- mark of Brno is Špilberk Fortress, which is lo- cated on Špilberk hill. The short walk up to the fortress is a must for a Brno trip. From the top you can enjoy a great view of Brno, however, our favourite look- out point is actually someplace else … keep reading to find out where!

Tower of the Old Town Hall

In our opinion, the most beautiful view over Brno is from the 63m high tower of the Old Town Hall („Stará radnice”). An interesting staircase will bring you up to the top of the tower, where you can see in all direc- tions from above. Being in the mid- dle of the centre, you are also pretty close to the impressive St. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Our tip: Visit the

33 tower just before sunset if possible, when the sun casts the best light and glow over the city.

Farmers Market at Krautmarkt

Sounds strange, but this beautiful place in the town centre really is called Krautmarkt. In- stead of once a week, this Farmer’s Market is open every day – except Mon- days. Local farmers gather and sell their goods, including fruit, vegetables, honey, cider and flowers. Unlike in other cities, this market gave us a very authentic and local impression.

Towers of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is not only the most important church in Brno, but also one of the most important buildings in the city. The impressive cathedral dominates the cityscape of Brno next to the fortress – and all the more so being built upon Petrov hill. What’s worth seeing is the stylish, not so crowded church in- terior and more importantly, the 84m high towers. However, we have to disappoint those who might be expecting a large wide-viewing platform. It is the opposite here: both towers

34 have a tiny window opening thus the view is rather limited view. Nevertheless, we would still recommend the climb.

Trdelník

You simply cannot leave the Czech Republic without eating these de- licious pastry rolled delights. Although they are not originally from the Czech Republic, but actually Slovakia, it is still widely seen in the city. The „Trdelník”, as it is called here, is a pastry baked on a long cylinder and then rolled into sugar – they taste best when freshly made and still warm. We prefer the traditional coating with just sugar and cinnamon, although there are also many adventurous, and some partially filled va- rieties.
