Read more in Peter Brand’s enlightening article about a special exhibit at the Louvre. Editor: Guiomar Duenas-Vargas Assistant: Aram Goudsouzian 2 History in the Age of Coronavirus Sometimes we forget that future historians will look back on our own time and make meaning of it. But this is not one of those times. The COVID-19 pandemic has not just cost lives – it has detonated our daily patterns, and it will have far-reaching consequences on our economic and political systems. And yet, we keep doing what historians do. The entire university shifted to online classes in mid-semester. The Department of History was well-equipped to handle the transition, thanks to our pioneering online pro- gram, which had already involved so many of our faculty. Our colleague Amanda Lee Savage deserves our special thanks for helping all the faculty navigate this transition. We remain committed to helping our students think critically, express themselves clearly, and logically inter- pret the past. But we also recognize that our students may need more than that. The crisis is cutting deep in Memphis. We can guide students through a document, but we can also extend a little personal understanding, or maybe crack a corny joke. In overt and subtle ways, we can remind our students that we are here to help them succeed. We thought about canceling this edition of History Happenings, but we decided that it was important to pub- lish it, because we remain committed to our mission as historians.

The case studied here is the Vegetarian Festival in Phuket, Thailand. This festival has been promoted as the largest local tourist event since the tourism industry became a dominant business in the 1990s. Through this festival, Chinese people whose ancestors migrated from Fujian have gained an opportunity to strengthen their Chinese identity, which was oppressed in the era of Thai nationalism. How- ever, only some dominant groups have been accepted by the local government as knowledgeable enough to portray the authenticity of the Vegetarian Festival. As a result, a master narrative (Cohen 2001) explaining the history of the festival has been published by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The narrative gives promi- nence to dominant shrines in Phuket, where various regulations were created to preserve the original traditions of the festival. Subsequently, younger generations who questioned the authenticity of the practices of the dominant shrines found that the festival had its origins in Taoism. Due to social media, online counterpublics emerged where counter-narratives were circulated among subordinates who were excluded from the public sphere of Phuket’s dominant shrines.

KNOWLEDGE AND PERCEPTIONS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS AMONG COLLEGE-AGED STUDENTS by Haley Berich A thesis submitted to the faculty of The University of Mississippi in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. Oxford March 2015 Approved by _________________________________ Advisor: Dr. Melinda Valliant _________________________________ Reader: Dr. Martha Bass _________________________________ Reader: Dr. Kathy Knight ©2015 Haley Berich ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 2 ABSTRACT HALEY BERICH: Knowledge and Perceptions of Vegetarian Diets Among College- Aged Students (Under the direction of Dr. Melinda Valliant) As health becomes a more primary focus for many Americans, people are turning to new diet choices. Vegetarian diets are available in a wide range of choices and have been found to provide many health benefits. However, adequate knowledge within the general public is lacking when it comes to vegetarian diets. The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge and perceptions held by college-aged students at the University of Mississippi. A survey was developed and distributed in health and wellness classes that were offered to students of all majors. 187 completed surveys were returned, of which 7 (3.7%) indicated they were vegetarian. The results showed very similar perceptions between the vegetarian and non-vegetarian groups. All perceptions were consistent with the hypothesis except for energy drinks/soda and alcohol consumption or drug use. No statistical significance was found, probably due to the extremely small number of vegetarian respondents in comparison to non-vegetarian respondents. Further research should include larger sample of vegetarians and involve other regions of the United States. 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION………………………………………………………… 5 CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE..…………………………………….

  • Philosophy of India - Dravidology
Philosophy of India - Dravidology H.V.Visweswaran, Independent Scholar, India The Asian Conference on Ethics, Religion & Philosophy 2021 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract This article traces the roots of Indian Philosophy from ancient Peninsular India. So far it is the Sanskrit literature, which described Indian Thought, is being discussed. We attempt here that the roots of Indian thought are in ancient Tamil works. This actually is an introduction to to the influence of various Tamil works which deal with materialism. Vedas, purusha suktha. Buddha, Sankhya. (எயm- e_nN-nNi_yam), Upanishads, gita, and thirukkural. This is a survey article. Readers are encouraged to read books dealing with these topics. Among these Sankhya is the oldest. iafor The International Academic Forum www.iafor.org Introduction This paper does not discuss any particular topic elaborately. Instead we discuss many related topics, which were hitherto not discussed in the way we discuss here. In that sense this paper is a survey article on the Philosophy of India. So far the Indian Philosophy, also referred to as INDOLOGY, concentrated on Sanskrit literature with mostly religious in contents. Here, we discuss topics which originated from Tamilnadu, Land of Tamil people, which are materialistic in approach. In the initial stages materialism was known. Spiritualim was unknown. Man leaernt from nature. Spiritualism started with yajurveda, dealing with mantras and rituals. Coming to the TAMIL LAND we make the following observations: Thousands of years back in writing an introductory remark for the Tamil classic, a first grammar of Tamil, Tholkappiyam, Panamparanar, a scholar wrote: "வடேவŋகடm µதl ெதமஆைடt த நlலகt.
