The Book of the Prophet Hosea 1 24 17 Hosea 2 • Hosea 2:1-3 • This section flows from the restoration language presented in chapter 1 • This language quickly reverts back to the destructive language of the prophesy • It draws the moral and at the same time provides the key to the whole book • Israel, the bride of God, has become a faithless harlot • She has aroused the anger and jealousy of her divine husband • God’s love remains • But he will punish her, but only to bring her back and restore her to the joys of their first love • Hosea is saying that good things will only happen if they repent * Hosea 2 (Cont) • Hosea 2: 4-5 • At times it is hard to know whether we are reading the story of Hosea and Gomer or God and Israel • In the end it is the same story • Both Hosea and God find themselves living within a covenantal controversy • So Hosea marries a prostitute from the street and she has two children • But we may wonder whose children are they since she continues to go back to the street? Year 2 Week 85 Solomon Forgets God — The Kingdom Divides Scriptures: 1 Kings 11 and 12 Key Verse: 1 Kings 11:9 “So the Lord became angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the Lord God of Israel...” Key Points: 1. Solomon loved and married women who worshiped idols rather than God. God had given laws not to intermarry with those who were idolatrous. Solomon had 700 wives and princesses and 300 concubines. They turned his heart away from God and he did evil by worshiping idols. 2. The Lord became angry with him, told him Israel would rebel. He told him that all but one tribe would be taken from his son, Rehoboam, who would be king after him. He would retain these because of God’s love for his father David. 10 tribes would be under another king. God promised not to do this while Solomon lived, but after he died. 3. God instructed his prophet Ahijah to meet a mighty man of valor, Jeroboam, and show him that 10 tribes would be given to him as king. He showed this by taking fabric and tearing it into 10 pieces. Solomon wanted to kill Jeroboam because of this but he escaped to Egypt until Solomon died. 4. After the death of Solomon, Rehoboam ruled very harshly, thinking he would gain loyalty. It did not work and a rebellion took place. A battle had been planned against J eroboam to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam. God sent Shemaiah, a prophet, to tell them not to fight. The kingdom would be divided, Judah and Benjamin remained with Rehoboam the rest with J eroboam. -

Lesson 1 Hosea: God’s Persistent Love July 4, 2021 Background Scripture Hosea 1, 4, 6 Lesson Passage: Hosea 1:2-10; 4:1-6; 6:4-11 (HCSB) Introduction: Hosea, whose name means salvation, or deliverance, was a contemporary of Amos. Hosea was a young preacher in the nation of Israel, the northern kingdom, and he was a contemporary of the prophets Isaiah and Amos. He lived, as we are told in the first verse, during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah (kings of Judah, the Southern Kingdom), and during the reign of Jeroboam. Jeroboam was one of the wicked kings of Israel and the nation was going through a difficult time when Hosea was preaching. Hosea has the distinction as being the last prophet God sent to that nation. The peoples’ conduct was nothing close to that demanded by God. They were guilty of swearing, breaking faith, murder, stealing, committing adultery, deceit, lying, drunkenness, dishonesty in business, and other crimes equally abominable before Jehovah (4:1-2, 11; 6:8-9; 10:4; 13:1-2). The priests were also involved in violence and bloodshed (6:9). The picture painted in the Book of Hosea is truly that of a nation in decay. God was completely left out of the peoples’ thinking. The prophet’s task was to turn the thinking of the people back to God, but they were too deeply steeped in their idolatry to heed his warning. They had passed the point of no return and they refused to hear. The key to Hosea’s prophecy is the parallel of Hosea’s personal life to that of God’s relationship with Israel. -

Notes on 1 Kings 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE The Books of 1 and 2 Kings received their names because they document the reigns of the 40 monarchs of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah following David. Israel had 20 kings, and Judah had 20, including one female who usurped the throne: Athaliah. In the Hebrew Bible, 1 and 2 Kings were one book until the sixteenth century. The ancients regarded them as the continuation of the narrative begun in Samuel. The Septuagint (Greek) translation of the Hebrew text, dating from about 250 B.C., was the first to divide Kings into two books. That division has continued to the present day. The Septuagint translators, however, called these two books 3 and 4 Kingdoms (or Reigns). First and 2 Kingdoms (or Reigns) were our 1 and 2 Samuel. Jerome's Vulgate (Latin) translation, which dates to about A.D. 400, changed the name from Kingdoms to Kings. "The English Bible presents the books primarily as historical accounts. Their placement next to 1, 2 Chronicles demonstrates the collectors' interest in detailing all [not all] the events of Israel's history. In contrast, the Hebrew Bible places Joshua-Kings with the prophets, which highlights their common viewpoints. This decision implies that 1, 2 Kings are being treated as proclamation and history."1 First and 2 Kings are the last of the Former Prophets books in the Hebrew Bible. We will focus on the religious experiences, worldviews, beliefs, behaviors, and symbols of the Jewish tradition, and on the historical forces--cultural, political, social, and economic--that have shaped Judaism. The course does not aim to reinforce or to change the student's feelings about Judaism, Jewish identity, or the Jewish people. It does aim to provide, as objectively as possible, a detailed understanding of the history of Judaism. How the Jews Are, and Always Have Been, Arrogant and Liars
CHAPTER ONE HOW THE JEWS ARE, AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN, ARROGANT AND LIARS The proof of this proposed chapter can be observed in the eighth chapter of the Gospel of Saint John, who states: Nemine servivimus unquam.1 They boast that they were never the slaves or servants of anyone. Their conceit can already be witnessed in this boast. The lie is also manifest as they were slaves of the Egyptians and, after the fall of Canaan, they worshipped idols. God punished them for their rebellion and delivered them into the hands of their enemies, who sold them as slaves. Moreover, they served the King of Mesopotamia, Chushan-Rishathaim, for eight years until Othniel freed them and they then enjoyed forty years of freedom. Nevertheless, as they had backslid into idol worship after the death of Othniel, God delivered them into the hands of Eglon, King of the Moabites, and they endured eighteen years of captivity. Ehud, Judge of Israel, freed them after treacherously assassinating Eglon. Their renewed freedom lasted eighty years until, after the death of Ehud, they returned to their worship of idols and God delivered them over to Jabin, King of Canaan, who oppressed them during twenty years. Deborah freed them and their liberty lasted forty years and, because of another relapse into idolatry, God subjected them to the Midianites during seven years until they were set free by Gideon.2 After this, they were subject to the power of the Philistines who, being aware of their treacherous nature, prohibited them from having any blacksmiths in all their land and compelled them to seek Philistine blacksmiths if they desired to acquire sharp knives or ploughshares to plough and cultivate their fields (1 Kings 12).3 1 John 8:33: “we were never in bondage to any man”. -
