Size: 6.5 linear ft. + 1 oversized folder Administrative Note: The Casco Bay Island Development Association (CBIDA) was originally organized on Peaks Island in 1959 as the Island Development Association for purposes including island beautification and development, social welfare, education, and collective representation of island interests, among others. The organization soon expanded to include representatives from all of the Casco Bay islands including Peaks Island, Long Island, Cliff Island, Chebeague Island, Cushing Island, Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island, and was renamed accordingly. Early efforts included island clean ups, prioritization of island issues, promotion of island development, and improvement of ferry piers and service. Shortly thereafter, the CBIDA floated a bond issue in support of the purchase of former government land on Peaks Island from Peter Cioffi. Over time, that project led to the development of the Back Shore and infrastructure improvements on Peaks Island, as well as set asides for public land there. Other notable projects include leading the effort to create the Casco Bay Island Transit District to ensure more efficient and reliable ferry service; influencing the development of island zoning standards adopted by the City of Portland; achieving limits to the development of Diamond Cove at the former Fort McKinley; participation in various coalitions to preserve the Portland working waterfront and water quality in Casco Bay; regular publication of Casco Bay newsletter and boating brochure.

  • Population Status of Arctic, Common, and Roseate Terns in the Gulf of Maine with Observations of Five Downeast Colonies
POPULATION STATUS OF ARCTIC, COMMON, AND ROSEATE TERNS IN THE GULF OF MAINE WITH OBSERVATIONS OF FIVE DOWNEAST COLONIES. prepared by: David C. ~olger and Matthew P. Drennan -1- Declines in numbers of Arctic Terns Sterna paradisaea~ Common Terns S.hirundo, and Roseate Terns S.dougallii, throughout the northeast have been noted since 1940 (Drury 1973, Korshgen 1978, Nisbet 1973). Recent observations of Arctic and Common Terns in the Gulf of Maine have indicated a continuation and potential heightening of trends noted over the past forty years. Comparisons between counts of Arctic Terns by Drury in 1972-73 (Drury, 1973) and by Drury and Folger in 1983 (unpublished data), have indicated a population decline of as much as 40% over the last decade. Furthermore, the most recent complete survey of Common Terns in the state, done in 1977, indicated a parallel decline of 30%. Reductions in breeding habitat and in number of Roseate Terns has prompted ·fedet·"~"d considet-aticln ·fol~ "thl~eab~rH?~d" ~;;tatus (Nisbet, 1980). Because of a concern for terns in general and warnings indicated by previous surveys our work was initiated to further clarify the tern situation in the Gulf of Maine and to investigate the reasons for the decline in numbers. In the summer of 1984 we censused the outer islands of the Maine coast for terns from Metinic Island, at the western edge of Penobscot Bay, to Old Man Island, east of Cutler. We made detailed observations on five of the islands in order to examine the various factors that influence tern production.

Dear Maine and Massachusetts Decision Makers, We urge you to deny Central Maine Power’s (CMP’s) applications for its New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) project because this proposed transmission line would be bad for the people of Maine and Massachusetts and our economy and environment. CMP’s proposal is designed to provide big benefits to CMP shareholders and Hydro-Québec at the expense of New England. This harmful proposal would: Cut a brand new, 53-mile-long corridor across Maine’s western mountains, harming forests, streams, wetlands, wildlife, and scenic beauty; Suppress the development of clean renewable energy (like wind and solar) in Maine, which would provide greater economic and environmental benefits; and Fail to reduce climate change emissions, and could even increase them. Please reject CMP’s NECEC proposal. Its costs to our people and environment are too great. Maine and Massachusetts deserve better. VOL. 13, No. 2 1979 CASCO BAY - MAINE August · COMPLIMENTARY ISSUE - 2,000 COPIES STILL UP IN THE AIR! In yet another abortive attempt to settle the location of a new Casco Bay Terminal, the Portland Planning Board failed to act on a choice of Hobson's Wharf (at the foot of High St.); or the combined Custom House - Portland Pier site. Unanimous rejection of Hobson's Wharf was voiced by island residents, supplemented by peti tions signed by many who could not attend the August 7 public hearing. Custom House was favored more as the lesser of two evils, than an ideal solution in itself. Underlying the testimony was a repeated sug gestion that the City look again at the Easterly side of Long Wharf which might be negotiated with owner Tony DeMillo - who, it is understood, ,-1 ,-1 - might be willing to move his Marina to the westerly m side in a more protected area.
