Strickland, Jr., Commissioner Cover: An extensive green roof system installed atop the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation’s (DPR) Five Borough Building on Randall’s Island. This modular system is one of six variations installed on the roof and covers 800 square feet, con- sisting of two-foot by two-foot trays with six inches of mineral soil and over 1,500 sedum plugs. DPR has installed 25 green roof systems covering over 29,000 square feet on the Five Borough Building rooftop to feature different types and depths of growing medium and plant selection. Dear Friends; The NYC Green Infrastructure Plan, released in September 2010, proposed an innovative ap- proach for cost-effective and sustainable stormwater management. A major part of this plan is our commitment to manage the equivalent of an inch of rainfall on ten percent of the impervious areas in combined sewer watersheds by 2030. To that end, DEP is prepared to spend $1.5 bil- lion to construct green infrastructure projects across the city. Yet public investment alone will not achieve our water quality goals, or our desired recreation and development opportunities. Some of the most cost-effective opportunities are represented by new construction and devel- opment, when stormwater source controls can be easily included in designs and built at a frac- tion of the cost of retrofitting existing buildings. -

Taxonomy of Cryptocarya species of Brazil Taxonomy of Cryptocarya This revision of Brazilian species of Cryptocarya, a large, pantropical genus of species of Brazil Lauraceae, comes highly recommended. Lauraceae is an extensive family of trees that has remained poorly studied because large trees with small fl owers are often ignored by fi eld workers. In a time when so much botanical research is focused on relationships between taxa, it is refreshing to see such a detailed work on species delimitation in a previously inaccessible group. Everything one could want to know about neotropical Cryptocarya species is included: keys, descriptions, illustrations, use, etc. In short, this is a monograph in the classical sense. Pedro L.R. de Moraes The author has studied the species extensively in the fi eld and this fi eld knowledge adds much to the value of this taxonomic review and sets it apart from most revisions that often are largely based on studies of dried specimens. Here, detailed discussions of fi eld characters and photographs of fresh specimens are aptly integrated. In conclusion, this is an excellent contribution to our knowledge of Lauraceae and the author is to be congratulated. One could only wish for more publications on the same high level! Sassafras is a tree common to the eastern coast of the United States, especially in the mountainous regions. Historically and continuing until today, roots of the tree are used to prepare fragrant teas and syrups. -

ABSTRACT Background. Mexico is one of the most floristically rich countries in the world. Despite significant contributions made on the understanding of its unique flora, the knowledge on its diversity, geographic distribution and human uses, is still largely fragmented. Unfortunately, deforestation is heavily impacting this country and native tree species are under threat. The loss of trees has a direct impact on vital ecosystem services, affecting the natural capital of Mexico and people's livelihoods. Given the importance of trees in Mexico for many aspects of human well-being, it is critical to have a more complete understanding of their diversity, distribution, traditional uses and conservation status. We aimed to produce the most comprehensive database and catalogue on native trees of Mexico by filling those gaps, to support their in situ and ex situ conservation, promote their sustainable use, and inform reforestation and livelihoods programmes. Methods. A database with all the tree species reported for Mexico was prepared by compiling information from herbaria and reviewing the available floras. This study was designed to document the range-wide population impacts to LWD, as well as the patterns of mortality and regeneration in Persea ecosystems. I used Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from the U.S. Forest Service to estimate Persea borbonia (red bay) populations from 2003 to 2011 to see if any decline could be observed since the introduction of LWD causal agents. -

In recent years, intensive research has been carried out regarding the antiviral activity of plant metabolites that could be used for the preservation of fresh food, because they are safer for consumption when compared to synthetic chemicals. Plant prepara- tions with proven antimicrobial activity differ in their chemical compositions, which significantly affects their biological activity. Our review aimed to present the results of research related to the characteristics, applicability, and mechanisms of the action of various plant-based preparations and metabolites against norovirus. New strategies to combat intestinal viruses are necessary, not only to ensure food safety and reduce infections in humans but also to lower the direct health costs associated with them. Between 1995 and 2004, as part of an ongoing macrolepidopteran inventory of the Area de Conservación Gua- nacaste (ACG), Costa Rica, 327 adults of the hesperiid genus Venada were reared from 636 wild-caught caterpillars and pupae. Al- though Venada was thought to be monotypic over its wide range (Mexico to Bolivia), there are four new species on Volcán Cacao in the ACG: Venada nevada, V. daneva, V. cacao, and V. naranja — all described by Burns, using characters of adult facies, male and female genitalia, caterpillar color pattern, and ecologic distribution. These skippers inhabit both rain and cloud forest, but not dry forest. The caterpillars feed on mature leaves of saplings in five genera of Lauraceae: Beilschmiedia, Licaria, Nectandra, Ocotea, and Persea. Caterpillars of Ridens also eat plants in the family Lauraceae, and Ridens and Venada may be closely related. Additional key words: caterpillars, foodplants (Lauraceae), genitalia (male and female), parasitoids, taxonomy, variation. Kosterm., B. rigida (Mez) Kosterm. and B. taubertiana (Schw. et Mez) Kosterm. (Lauraceae) is described. The taxonomy and ecology of these species, important components of the Amazonian forest or Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil, are discussed as related to wood anatomy. The main anatomical differences are: presence, type, arrangement and location of inorganic inclusions and secretory cells, and the arrangement of the axial parenchyma. Key words: Wood anatomy,Anaueria. Beilschmiedia, Lauraceae, taxon omy, ecology. INTRODUCTION Anaueria Kosterm. is amonotypic genus, with the single speciesA. brasiliensis Kosterm. (Kostermans 1938; Van der Werff 1991).1t was once (1957) included in Beilschmiedia by Kostermans, but is anatomically closer to Mezilaurus Taubert (Rohwer 1993). The genus Beilschmiedia Nees consists of about 250 species and is found through out the tropics (Rohwer 1993); six species occur in the Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil: Beilschmiedia angustifolia. B. emarginata. B. fluminensis. B. rigida. B. stricta and B. taubertiana. Three of these species were examined in this study. They were selected on the basis of availability of botanical material, whether fresh from the forest or through the exchange of wood sampies from collections in Brazil. Beilschmiedia rigida (Mez) Kosterm. and B. taubertiana (Schw. et Mez) Kosterm. are among the most important tree species at the Macae de Cima Munü;:ipal Ecological Reserve and the Parafso State Ecological Station (Relat6rio Tecnico do Programa Mata Atläntica do Jardim Botänico do Rio de Janeiro 1990). -

Abstract The Tulula Wetlands Mitigation Bank, the first wetlands mitigation bank in the Blue Ridge Province of North Carolina, was created to compensate for losses resulting from highway projects in western North Carolina. The overall objective for the Tulula Wetlands Mitigation Bank has been to restore the functional and structural characteristics of the wetlands. Specific ecological restoration objectives of this Phase I study included: 1) reestablishing site hydrology by realigning the stream channel and filling drainage ditches; 2) recontouring the floodplain by removing spoil that resulted from creation of the golf ponds and dredging of the creek; 3) improving breeding habitat for amphibians by constructing vernal ponds; and 4) reestablishing floodplain and fen plant communities.
