  • Get Prepared California Online Auction Raises More Than $180,000 for American Red Cross Disaster Readiness and Relief Efforts in California
For Immediate Release: May 10, 2012 Media Contacts: California Earthquake Authority American Red Cross D’Anne Ousley Cynthia Shaw (916) 325-3845 (408) 666-6857 [email protected] [email protected] Get Prepared California Online Auction Raises More Than $180,000 for American Red Cross Disaster Readiness and Relief Efforts in California SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Just two months after joining forces to increase earthquake preparedness in California, the alliance between the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) and the American Red Cross (Red Cross) already is exceeding expectations. The alliance’s statewide online auction in April raised $180,000 for Red Cross preparedness efforts and response programs in California. Auction proceeds will be presented through a check to Red Cross during the popular Wango Tango event in Los Angeles this Saturday, May 12. Wango Tango is an annual day-long concert that features several performers and draws sellout crowds. “This first-time statewide online auction attracted more interest than we imagined possible,” said American Red Cross Los Angeles Region Chapter CEO Paul Schulz. “In addition to raising over $180,000, the auction and the CEA and Red Cross alliance helped Californians learn how to prepare to survive and recover from California’s next damaging earthquake.” The auction, which concluded on April 27, 2012, included a new car; expense-paid trips to meet and attend concerts for award winning country singer Taylor Swift in Ottawa (Canada), Celine Dion in Las Vegas, Coldplay in Paris, teen heartthrobs One Direction in Los Angeles; as well as a celebrity-escorted visit to Six Flags Magic Mountain.

By A capstone project submitted for Graduation with University Honors University Honors University of California, Riverside APPROVED _______________________________________________ Dr. Department of _______________________________________________ Dr. Richard Cardullo, Howard H Hays Jr. Chair, University Honors Abstract Many individuals use social media platforms as a form of entertainment or as something that allows them to keep in touch with today’s society. We, as a generation, have become attached to cellular devices, the desire to keep in immediate contact with each other, oversharing personal information, and access to the internet. This past summer I had the opportunity to work alongside the Social/Digital Media Team as one of two Digital Media interns at iHeartMedia in Burbank. My internship was specifically aligned with iHeartRadio, a subdivision of iHeartMedia. Within the iHeartMedia Burbank office, there are 8 in house radio stations that fall under iHeartRadio and cater to a range of different markets and have a reach of around 12.5 million people every week. Their in-house stations, in no particular order, are 102.7 KIIS fm, 104.3 MYfm, KOST 103.5, ALT 98.7, REAL 92.3, KFI AM640, LA Sports AM 570, and The Patriot AM 1150. Looking more specifically at the subdivision, iHeartRadio is a free broadcast and internet radio platform that supports the streaming of their in-house radio stations, national radio stations, podcasts, and many other features like artist specific playlists. I was able to witness the importance of social media from the perspective of iHeartMedia as a mass media communications company, from the perspective of their subdivision marketing of iHeartRadio, and from the perspective of the individual radio stations within the building.

By Kate Taylor Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell has been voted as Moorabool’s new Mayor. East Ward Councillor John Spain was voted in as Deputy Mayor. Outgoing Mayor Pat Toohey did not re-nominate at the Statutory and Annual Appointments Meeting held last Wednesday 30 October, where Mayor Tatchell won the role with a 5-2 majority. Nominated by East Ward Councillor Allan Comrie, Cr Tatchell gained votes from fellow councillors Comrie, David Edwards, Tonia Dudzik and John Spain. West Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan was nominated and voted for by Pat Toohey. New Mayor Tatchell told the meeting he was very fortunate to have been given the privilege of the role. “For former mayor Pat Toohey, to have come on board and then taken on the role of Mayor with four new councillors, he jumped straight in the driver’s seat… and the first few months were very difficult, but he persevered with extreme patience. “And to the experienced councillors we came in contact with from day one, with years of experience, without that, I can’t imagine how a council could have operated with seven new faces. We are incredibly fortunate to have those experienced councillors on board.” Mayor Tatchell also hinted at a vision for more unity in the future. “A bit less of ‘I’ and more of ‘we,’” he said. Deputy Mayor Spain was voted in with votes from councillors Dudzik, Edwards, and Comrie, with Mayor Tatchell not required to cast a vote on a majority decision.

ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS: How Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night Portrayed the Sports Journalist as a Modern, Educated Professional While Still Fitting the Classic Molds of Journalists in Popular Culture. By Eric Alvarez Abstract Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night focuses on the events that unfold in the newsroom of a nightly sports highlight show. The impulse of the series stems from the relationships amongst the show’s two anchors, three producers and its managing editor. As individuals, the journalists are smart, talented and dedicated in their professional lives. Yet, despite their capabilities and professionalism, each echoes characteristics and faces problems similar to those of journalists in classic popular culture. They often put the job over their personal lives and struggle when faced with the consequences. But in the end, they always tend to band together as a newsroom family. * * * “Five minutes to air. First team in the studio.1” The voice echoes through the newsroom at 10:55 p.m. It is the nightly wake-up call for the Sports Night team. Journalists both in front of the camera and in the control room scramble as the clock ticks toward show time. And then it starts. The one thing that gives the journalists a home, a family and a sense of accomplishment. ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS: How Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night Portrayed the Sports Journalist as a Modern, Educated Professional While Still Fitting the Classic Molds of Journalists in Popular Culture. By Eric Alvarez 2 The team of anchors and producers creates a nightly, one-hour highlight show from New York, “the most magnificent city in the world.
