Joseph Wheeler, Col. Theodore Roosevelt, the Rough Riders and members of the Third Cavalry on board, pulled away from the dock at Santiago, Cuba to begin its voyage north. Anxious that his men not miss the sights, Col. Roosevelt urged them to stay on deck. As the ship approached Morro Castle, the Third Cavalry band began to play John Howard Payne's "Home, Sweet Home". The American soldiers stationed at the castle cheered wildly as the homeward-bound troops passed by. The Gate City, the first transport to start north, had left Santiago two days earlier. Over the next five weeks, nearly forty ships would bring a total of 22,500 soldiers of Gen. Shafter's Fifth Army Corps from Santiago de Cuba to Montauk, where a 4,200-acre military encampment had been hastily prepared for their rest and recuperation. The 2,000-mile, eight-day journey would prove a further test for the heroes of the Spanish-American War. Many suffered the ill effects of tropical diseases like malaria, typhoid, dysentery and, in a few cases, yellow fever. The ships were over-crowded and lacked adequate supplies for healthy men, let alone fever-stricken ones. Both the Mobile and Allegheny transports were called "death ships" on arrival at Fort Pond Bay. Thirteen soldiers had died on board the Mobile and been buried at sea; fourteen on the Allegheny suffered the same fate.

During a career that spanned less than twenty-five years, Frederic Remington produced a huge body of work: illustration, painting, sculpture & writing - the vast majority of it centered on the Old American West. 2. Remington portrayed and brought to life the action and drama of the West, thereby defining the “Wild West” for the popular imagination. 3. Remington was a native of New York and produced most of his art in the East, thereby assisting in the creation of the romantic notion of the Old West that Easterners embraced and which persists today. 1 OVERVIEW OF REMINGTON’S LIFE AND WORK Early Years Although closely identified with the American West, Remington actually spent much of his life in the East. Frederic Remington , the only child of Seth Pierre Remington and Clara Bascomb Sackrider Remington, was born in Canton, New York on October 4, 1861. His boyhood in Northern New York fostered a lifelong love of horses and the outdoors. And his father's tales of action as a Cavalry officer in the Civil War inspired a passion for things military that found a Western focus with the battle of the Little Bighorn during the nation's Centennial Year, 1876.

A Dash for the Timber, one of Frederic Remington's (1861–1909) largest and most characteristic works, was acquired by the collector, Amon Carter, in 1945, and hangs today in the museum bearing his name in Fort Worth, Texas (fig. 1).1 At four feet by seven feet it has an unusual immediacy and dramatic presence. Museum visitors often come in pairs and enjoy giving each other little gifts of observation and insight. A well-dressed woman was overheard recently to observe to her companion as they paused to take it in: “Look at the horses. Great horses. That’s the sign of a great artist. One of them has been shot. I love this one.” Despite the non-sequiturs and ambiguous modifiers, this was an astute as well as enthusiastic comment about a work whose object biography illuminates central concerns and disputes in American culture from the 1880s to the present. A Dash for the Timber (painted in 1889) was successively commissioned by a wealthy capitalist, publically admired, sold to a consortium of businessmen, given to a university, deaccessioned, acquired by a prominent collector and given pride of place in his public museum.

    G. ATWOOD MANLEY PAPERS COLLECTION #67 SCOPE AND CONTENTS The Atwood Manley Papers, covering the years 1856-1989, were donated to the university by the Manley family at the time of his death. They comprise 5.16 linear feet of correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, notes, and tapes relating to Manley’s interests. Manley wrote several books and articles on Canton-born artist Frederic Remington, so a large portion of the collection consists of correspondence, notes, and manuscripts related to Remington. Manley also wrote a history of the Stillwater Club and did research on other Canton topics, including the history of St. Lawrence University, of which he was a loyal alumnus. Notes for these articles also appear in the collection as well as the manuscripts of two autobiographical pieces. Finally, there are nineteen taped interviews with Manley in which he discourses on many aspects of Canton and St. Lawrence University history such as the county fair, Adirondack guides, Remington, Rushton canoes, the St. Lawrence Plaindealer, Owen D. Young, early college history, Ernest Robinson, the St. Lawrence Seaway, Richardson Hall, Irving Bacheller, Canton hotels, Canton churches, A. Barton Hepburn, the history of the St. Lawrence University Theological School, and Albert Crary. Manley’s life-long interest in his hometown and his alma mater make these papers extremely valuable for anyone doing research on Canton and St. Lawrence University history. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION Gilbert Atwood Manley, known by his middle name, was born in Canton on October 31, 1893.
