From the 18th century T to the mid-20th century, through the establishment of national independence, a civil war, westward expansion, and the United States’s rise to an international power, American artists have furnished a rich legacy that helps illuminate the past and exposes a diverse range of cultural values. Works from the Art Institute of Chicago’s comprehensive American collection found in this manual include colonial portraiture, sculpture and landscape art that refl ect the young nation in the early 19th century, and examples of painting and decorative arts from the turn of the century that signal a new cultural maturity and aesthetic sophistication. Masterpieces of 20th-century art in the museum’s collection include two of the most celebrated and familiar American icons, Grant Wood’s American Gothic and Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, whose realism refl ects one facet of American art in a century marked by the emergence of modernism and abstraction—modes of expression that reached their apogee in the United States following the conclusion of World War II. This manual can be used in multiple ways by teachers wishing to use American art to enrich students’ understanding of various subject areas and to develop and sharpen cognitive and creative skills. The introduction provides an overview of American history to the mid-20th century, furnishing a contextual framework for the artworks featured in the manual. Twenty-six works from the museum’s permanent collection of American art are reproduced and discussed in extended texts that treat the lives of the artists who created them, describe the cultural and historic environment in which they were produced, and examine their style and content (and, in the case of decorative arts, their function). Many of these works are paired with a second, related object that further enhances understanding of the artist or period to which the fi rst work belongs. Key terms are highlighted in bold type are defi ned in the glossary. Following the discussion of each object is a listing of broad themes intended to aid educators in connecting the works to class curricula and teaching across disciplines. These themes are identity (for works in which social station, profession, accomplishments, or personality of fi gures represented is key); nature and environment (identifying landscapes or city views, or works that focus on natural objects, such as still lifes with fruit or fl owers); economics (applied to works in which patronage, labor, systems of trade or exchange, or references to conditions of prosperity or poverty are of special interest); and narrative (for those objects in which a story or sequence of events, actual or fi ctional, is implied). ii American Art The addendum at the end of the manual brings the historical overview to the present and includes brief discussions of four contemporary works. Fourteen lesson plans correlated to the Illinois Learning Standards provide strategies for using works in the manual to teach across curricula. A timeline shows the chronological sequence of the works alongside historical and cultural events. Two maps show the development of the United States and locations associated with objects in the manual, and the bibliography lists books (arranged by topic), annotated Web sites, and teacher resources on American art. In addition to reproductions of the 26 primary artworks in the form of small color posters, images are provided on the accompanying CD to facilitate projection on a screen or viewing on a computer monitor. A digital copy of the entire manual is included on the disk as well. The Art Institute’s collection of American art has been expanded by a historic long-term loan agreement with the Terra Foundation for American Art, which has contributed 50 of its greatest paintings and a remarkable selection of works on paper, making the Art Institute one of the major centers for American art in the world. Many of the works on loan from the Terra Foundation bear a strong relationship to works in the Art Institute’s collection. Those with a connection to works in the manual are listed along with the address of the Terra Foundation’s Web site so that readers can view reproductions and fi nd more information. While the ways in which the incorporation of antiquity into the French Revolutionary project forged a new kind of investment in the classical world have been well-documented, the drastic effects of the Revolution in terms of this particular cultural formation have remained largely unexamined in the context of British sculpture and historical painting. By 1820, a reaction against ideal forms and their ubiquitous presence during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wartime becomes commonplace in British cultural criticism. Taking shape in a series of chronological case-studies each centring on some of the nation’s most conspicuous artists during the period, this thesis navigates the causes and effects of this backlash, beginning with a state-funded marble monument to a fallen naval captain produced in 1798-1803 by the actively radical sculptor Thomas Banks.     Harn Museum of Art Educator Resource Monet & Impressionism About the Artist Claude Monet was born in Paris on November 14, 1840. He enjoyed drawing lessons in school and began making and selling caricatures at age seventeen. In 1858, he met landscape artist Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) who introduced him to plein-air (outdoor) painting. During the 1860s, only a few of Monet’s paintings were accepted for exhibition in the prestigious annual exhibitions known as the Salons. This rejection led him to join with other Claude Monet, 1899 artists to form an independent group, later known as the Impressionists. Photo by Nadar During the 1860s and 1870s, Monet developed his technique of using broken, rhythmic brushstrokes of pure color to represent atmosphere, light and visual effects while depicting his immediate surroundings in Paris and nearby villages. Abstract Often homogenised into broader narratives of African-American history, the historical experience of mixed-race women of black-white descent forms the central research focus of this thesis. Examining the lives of such women offers a valuable insight into how notions of race, class, gender and physical aesthetics were understood, articulated and negotiated throughout the United States during the early-twentieth century. Through an analysis of wide-ranging primary source material, from letters, diaries and autobiographies to advertisements, artwork and unpublished poetry, this thesis provides an interdisciplinary contribution to the field of Critical Mixed Race Studies, and African- American history. It builds on existing interpretations of the Harlem Renaissance by considering the significance of mixed-racial heritage on the formation of literature produced by key individuals over the period. Moreover, this research reveals that many of the visual and literary sources typically studied in isolation in fact informed one another, and had a profound impact on how factors such as beauty, citizenship, and respectability intersected, and specifically influenced the lives of mixed-race women.

    Edward Hopper, Landscape, and Literature Gail LEVIN The art of Edward Hopper, the American realist painter, contains many clues that allow us to trace his interest in literature, which in turn helps to characterize his particular brand of realism. 1) Signs of Hopper’s engagement with literature emerge already in his boyhood. Born in 1882, Hopper grew up in Nyack, New York, a town on the Hudson River, some forty miles north of New York City, where he went to attend art school and lived as an adult, until his death in 1967, shortly before his eighty-fifth birthday. Among the early indications that literature affected Hopper is a plaque that he designed for a Boys’ Yacht Club, which he formed together with three pals. Hopper designed this plaque with the names of the members’ boats. While the other boys chose female names that were upbeat and innocuous, Edward’s choice, Water Witch (Fig. 1), telegraphs an effect of reading on his imagination. He took the name for his boat from The Water- Witch, James Fenimore Cooper’s 1830 novel that tells how the “exploits, mysterious character, and daring of the Water-Witch, and of him who sailed her, were in that day, the frequent subjects of anger, admiration and surprise.... ” 2) His boyhood interest led Hopper to build not only a sailboat but a canoe. This period of intense fight has been the object of many literary and critical works, such as novels, collections of poetry and scholarly articles. From the huge bibliography on this topic I have chosen to focus on The Heidi Chronicles, a play written by Wendy Wasserstein (1950-2006) which reflects and engages with the main concerns raised by women in the period covering the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Thus, I argue that this text could very well illustrate the political, social and theoretical aspects developed within the Second Feminist Wave in the United States. A further reason for choosing this work has to do with the possibilities of theatre as a cultural manifestation to deal with questions that include gender relations and social themes. The theatre has always implied an interaction between characters in a literal way, and this turns it perhaps into the most straightforward genre to involve the public – the audience – or the readership.

He impacted lots of artists, photographers, filmmakers, set designers, dancers, writers, and his effect has touched many artists like Rothko, Segal and Oursler, who work with different mediums. He is an interesting artist in the way of impressing nearly all photographers from Arbus to Eggleston. Including Mendes, Lynch and Welles, generations have been inspired from Hopper’s dramatic viewpoints, lighting, and moods. His painting, “Residence by the Railroad” (1925) stimulated Alfred Hitchcock’s house in Psycho (1960) as well as that in Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven (1978). This article introduces the artist with some examples of his personality and samples from his works. Hopper’s paintings are attractive to some writers and musicians. For instance, Tom Waits made an album known as “Nighthawks on the Diner”. Also, Madonna selected a name for a live performance tour after Hooper’s “Girlie Display”.
