Issue 92: America’s 20th Century Evangelical Awakening A New Evangelical Awakening: Did You Know? Interesting and Little Known Facts about America's Mid Century Evangelical Resurgence "Mr. Evangelical" One of the most important 20th-century shapers of modern evangelicalism was a man whose name is unknown to most evangelicals today: Harold John Ockenga (AH-ken-gay). During his lifetime Ockenga served as founder and first president of the National Association of Evangelicals; president of the American Board of the World Evangelical Fellowship; president, co—founder, and later Chairman of the Board of Fuller Theological Seminary; Chairman of the Board of CHRISTIANITY TODAY magazine; a member of the board of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association; pastor of historic Park Street Church in Boston for more than three decades; and the founding president of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. His remarkable oratorical skills and visionary speeches made him evangelicalism's most trusted voice for decades. Billy Graham, whose fame has now eclipsed his mentor, claimed that he never made a major decision in his life without first consulting Ockenga. [See America's Hour Has Struck for more about Ockenga.] —contributed by Garth Rosell Election redirection The New Evangelicals were determined to infuse the public square—including the political arena‐ with the truths of Christianity. In the midst of the 1952 presidential campaign, a group of Christians led by former Youth for Christ president Torrey Johnson held their own "campaign" on the heels of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in an attempt to spark discussion of spiritual issues. "We feel the time has come when the entire nation should pray for guidance in the coming elections," Johnson said. -
The Good Life Book Discussion Guide
The Good Life Book Discussion Guide Chapter 1: The Unavoidable Question In the past, how have you defined the “good life”? What influences in your life led you to define it this way? Has your definition changed over the years? In the opening story of Private James Ryan’s visit to the military cemetery at Normandy, what was the question that “dogged his whole life”? What circumstances do you think cause people to ask the question, “Have I lived a good life?” Have you ever asked yourself a similar question? If so, describe the circumstances and how you answered it. Chapter 2: A Shattered Life If you’re old enough to remember the Daniel Ellsberg case and the Watergate scandal, what memories do you have? If you don’t remember them personally, what have you heard about them? Did Charles Colson’s account in this chapter give you any new insights into those incidents? Colson says that “the most shattering thing about prison was the thought that I would never again do anything significant with my life” (page 22). Have you ever felt that way? Chapter 3: The Great Paradoxes Colson says, “Prison turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me” (page 23). Do you understand how he could feel this way? Have you ever seen any of the following paradoxes at work in your own life? If so, explain. – Out of suffering and defeat often comes victory. – We have to lose our lives to save them. – Freedom lies not in conforming to the world’s expectations or even realizing what we take to be our deepest wishes; it lies in following the call on our lives. -

THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF BILL BRIGHT With the simple mission of win, build, and send the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, International has likely evangelized, won, and discipled more people than any other ministry in the history of the world. Campus Crusade, today a multi-million dollar ministry with over 25,000 staff and 500,000 trained volunteers, began humbly in the mind of one man. Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade has since been listed among the top influential evangelical leaders of the late 20th century.1 It is Bright alone that set into motion the mission and methods of his ministry and this paper will provide a biography of Bright and a description and analysis of his methods for ministry. Biography Bill Bright lived such a productive life that countless books could be written about him. Countless books, however, are not to be found. In fact, only one dissertation has ever been written on Bill Bright. Only two biographies of Bright have been published. A handful of other books have Bright as their main subject. By and large, Bill Bright, one of the most influential Christian leaders of the last fifty years, remains of small significance in the academic world. Perhaps this is how Bright would want it. William Bright was born on October 19, 1921 at home on his parent’s farm five miles 1John G. Turner, Bill Bright & Campus Crusade for Christ: The Renewal of Evangelicalism in Postwar America (Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 2008), 2. 1 2 outside of Coweta, Oklahoma.2 Bright’s mother had miscarried her last child so when she became pregnant with Bill she made a commitment with God. -
