Steele Department of Biology, California State University, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge, California 91330-8303, USA ABSTRACT: In organisms that have a life history phase whose dispersal is influenced by abiotic forcing, if individuals of different species are simultaneously exposed to the same forcing, spa- tially correlated settlement patterns may result. Such correlated recruitment patterns may affect population and community dynamics. The extent to which settlement or recruitment is spatially correlated among species, however, is not well known. We evaluated this phenomenon among 8 common kelp forest fishes at 8 large reefs spread over 30 km of the coast of Santa Catalina Island, California. In addition to testing for correlated recruitment, we also evaluated the influences of predation and habitat quality on spatial patterns of recruitment. Fish and habitat attributes were surveyed along transects 7 times during 2008. Using these repeated surveys, we also estimated the mortality rate of the prey species that settled most consistently (Oxyjulis californica) and evaluated if mortality was related to recruit density, predator density, or habitat attributes. Spatial patterns of recruitment of the 8 study species were seldom correlated. Recruitment of all species was related to one or more attributes of the habitat, with giant kelp abundance being the most widespread predictor of recruitment. Mortality of O. californica recruits was density-dependent and declined with increasing canopy cover of giant kelp, but was unrelated to predator density. -

The medially elongate subocular shelf appears unique for the genus among other Serraninae examined. Species may be distinguished on the basis of otoliths, supraoccipital-parietal ridges, shape of vomerine toothpatch and other characters. C. striata shows increased frontal bone ossification (hyperostosis) which is apparently correlated with sex reversal and is a male secondary sex characteristic. Phylogeny of the Epinephelinae (Teleostei: Serranidae)

David Johnson ABSTRACT Relationships among epinepheline genera are investigated based on cladistic analysis of larval and adult morphology. Five monophyletic tribes are delineated, and relationships among tribes and among genera of the tribe Grammistini are hypothesized. Generic com- position of tribes differs from Johnson's (1983) classification only in the allocation of Je- boehlkia to the tribe Grammistini rather than the Liopropomini. Despite the presence of the skin toxin grammistin in the Diploprionini and Grammistini, we consider the latter to be the sister group of the Liopropomini. This hypothesis is based, in part, on previously un- recognized larval features. Larval morphology also provides evidence of monophyly of the subfamily Epinephelinae, the clade comprising all epinepheline tribes except Niphonini, and the tribe Grammistini. Larval features provide the only evidence of a monophyletic Epine- phelini and a monophyletic clade comprising the Diploprionini, Liopropomini and Gram- mistini; identification of larvae of more epinephelines is needed to test those hypotheses. Within the tribe Grammistini, we propose that Jeboehlkia gladifer is the sister group of a natural assemblage comprising the former pseudogrammid genera (Aporops, Pseudogramma and Suttonia). The "soapfishes" (Grammistes, Grammistops, Pogonoperca and Rypticus) are not monophyletic, but form a series of sequential sister groups to Jeboehlkia, Aporops, Pseu- dogramma and Suttonia (the closest of these being Grammistops, followed by Rypticus, then Grammistes plus Pogonoperca). The absence in adult Jeboehlkia of several derived features shared by Grammistops, Aporops, Pseudogramma and Suttonia is incongruous with our hypothesis but may be attributable to paedomorphosis. -

The morphological characters along with their body colour patterns are described. This is the first record of the species from Visakhapatnam coastal waters, east coast of India. Fishermen returning from fishing trips were interviewed at launch ramps, hoists, and boat-rental facilities. This report contains quantitative data and statistical estimates of total effort, total catch, catch of preferred species, and length frequencies for those species whose catches are regulated by minimum size limits. An estimated 356,000 organisms were landed by 134,000 anglers and 5,400 divers. The major components of the catch were Pacific mackerel, Scomber japonicus, 89,000 landed; Pacific bonito, Smda chiZiensis, 82,000 landed; white croaker, Genyonemus Zineatus, 34,000 landed; and bass, ParaZabrm spp., 33,000 landed. These species made up two-thirds of the total catch. Anglers' compliance with size-limit regulations was variable. Approximately 88% of all measured bass were legal size. -

Neotropical Ichthyology, 5(3):387-398, 2007 Copyright © 2007 Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia Activity, habitat use, feeding behavior, and diet of four sympatric species of Serranidae (Actinopterygii: Perciformes) in southeastern Brazil Fernando Zaniolo Gibran Diplectrum formosum (the sand perch), Diplectrum radiale (the aquavina), Epinephelus marginatus (the dusky grouper) and Mycteroperca acutirostris (the comb grouper) are four sympatric serranid of remarkable ecological and commercial importance. This study investigated the feeding of these four species in the São Sebastião Channel, São Paulo State (southeastern Brazil), comparing their diet, habitat utilization and morphological features related to foraging. These four serranids are opportunistic visual predators that use a total of nine different tactics to capture their preys, feed mostly on crustaceans during the day and twilight, and keep stationary and quiescent at night. The ecomorphological study was conducted to test its predictive value to infer lifestyles. It was verified that such analysis should be used carefully and must be complemented by field observations. Although morphologically and behaviorally very similar, D. formosum and D. radiale showed different preferences to the substratum type used by large individuals, which are exclusively sit-and-wait predators. On the other hand, E. marginatus displayed more sedentary habits than M. acutirostris, the most versatile predator from the studied species. The studied species of Diplectrum and E. marginatus can be regarded as benthic serranids, while M. acutirostris could be viewed as a nektobenthic species. Diplectrum formosum, Diplectrum radiale (micholes-da-areia), Epinephelus marginatus (garoupa-verdadeira) e Mycteroperca acutirostris (badejo-mira) são quatro espécies simpátricas que pertencem à família Serranidae, de reconhecida importância ecológica e comercial. -

Allen, Ph.D., Principal Investigator Director, Southern California Marine Institute and Professor of Biology California State University, Northridge 9 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • We tested the feasibility of using an innovative approach that will prove to be an extremely valuable technique for all future stock assessments of coastal pelagic species off southern California. We conducted a hydroacoustic (sonar) assessment of barred sand bass standing stock (abundance and biomass) using high resolution split beam sonar verified by both rod and reel sampling over sonar targets and underwater video observations. Simply put, we plan to visually identify conspicuous acoustic targets, identify these targets with both rod and reel sampling and underwater video towed by the research vessel. Once a target is verified (e.g., as an aggregation of barred sand bass), its target strength can be related quantitatively to abundance and biomass. • The feasibility phase of this study was conducted over five days in July (peak spawning months for barred sand bass) of 2010 over the 20-30m depth contour at Huntington Flats. Each day the sampling, area was easily determined by the positioning of the sport fishing fleet including Commercial Passenger Sportfishing Vessels (CPFVs) and private vessels targeting sand bass from San Pedro, Long Beach and Newport Beach.
