Chidambaram, Chairman Organizing Committee, Thiru Anil Khanna, secretary General, All India Tennis Association and Friends. I am proud and happy, that the Davis Cup has returned to Chennai, after 31 years. SDAT Stadium Chennai is hosting the Davis Cup World Group play-off between India and Brazil from September 17th to 19th. The last time Chennai played host to the Davis Cup was in 1979 when India played Australia at the Madras Gymkhana Club. A whole new generation of tennis lovers all over the world will get to experience the 1 magic of the Davis Cup to be hosted at this historic city of Chennai. We have come a long way from the olden days, when matches were played on wooden stands — and temporary clay courts! Now we have world class stadia in Tamil Nadu for most of the games. By holding the Chennai Open Tennis Tournament year after year the Government of Tamil Nadu strives to fulfil its role as a facilitator for placing Chennai and Tamil Nadu in the World atlas as a preferred hub for International Sports. I am happy to learn that India will be represented by Som Devvarman who grew up in Chennai, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Rohan Bopanna. I specially congratulate Leander Paes for completing 20 years of playing in the Davis Cup. The Brazilian team, consisting of Thomaz Belluci and Ricardo Mello, and the doubles pairing of Bruno Soares and Melo has all the best wishes from me and all the Tennis lovers of Tamil Nadu. Western & Southern Open Defending Champions Headline Doubles Fields CINCINNATI (Aug. 11, 2020) – Both the women’s and men’s defending champions are among the initial entries to play doubles at the 2020 Western & Southern Open, which will be held Aug. 20-28 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York. The top two teams in the ATP Tour doubles race are entered in the men’s draw. The No. 1 team of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah is returning after reaching two straight Western & Southern Open finals. They are joined in the field by the No. 2 team of Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo. The ATP Tour No. 1 ranked singles player, Novak Djokovic, has entered the doubles draw with countryman Filip Krajinovic. An additional five women’s teams and six men’s duos will join the fields through on-site entries, while the tournament will award three wild cards into each draw to complete the 32-team fields.

SPORTS INDIA AND WORLD World Cup Cricket History The idea of organising a World Cup of cricket was mooted and agreed to in principle in 1971 when such a proposal was discussed at a meeting of the International Cricket Conference in London. However, due to various commitments the tournaments could not be staged until 1975 when the original plan of a South African team's visit to England fell through following opposition to the country's racial policy. England's Prudential Assurance Company came forward with sponsorship and for three consecutive years - 1975, 1979 and 1983, the one-day limited overs cricket tournament was held in England. It became famous as the Prudential Cup. In the first two tournaments, apart from the six full members of the International Cricket Conference (England, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, India and Pakistan), Sri Lanka, before being elevated to Test status in 1981, had joined East Africa in 1975 and Canada in 1979 (two top teams among the associate members) to complete the groups in the tournaments proper. The West Indies, under Clive Lloyd, not only won the first two tournaments in 1975 and 1979 but in true Calypso style they produced sparkling cricket and confirmed their unassailable supremacy in this game. India broke the West Indian stranglehold in 1983 to open a new chapter in the brief annals of this prestigious tournament. Winning the title at each major in the same year is known as the “Grand Slam”. Three women have completed the singles Grand Slam in a calendar year: 1953 – Maureen Connolly; 1970 – Margaret Court; 1988 – Stefanie Graf. A further seven women have won each Grand Slam singles title at least once in their careers (known as the career Grand Slam): Doris Hart, Shirley Fry, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, with Navratilova (1983-84) and Williams (2002-03, 2014-15) holding all four titles at the same time.
