State Senator Richard Posthumus: A Profile by David Kimball, Senior Consultant for Public Policy At age 40 Senator Dick Posthumus regularly is heralded as one of the brightest stars of Michigan's Republican Party. His star still is rising: The election that just gave Posthumus his third Senate term also propelled his close, longtime friend John Engler to the governorship, and in the Senate Republican caucus last week Posthumus won the majority leader's post, a position formerly held by Engler. Respected by his colleagues and widely considered a born politician with uncanny tactical instincts, Posthumus is unassumingly self-confident and wears an easy smile on a youthtd, untroubled countenance. He credits much of this interpemnal ease to the fact that he punctuates his time at the capitol with the daiIy commute to his AIto (near Grand Rapids) home where he grows cash crops on a 600-acre family farm. "You can get so deeply into politics that everything else becomes secondary and family life tends to be destroyed," he says. "When I first decided to xun I made a commitment that I was not going to let that happen-that my family was going to come first no matter what. One of the ways I accomplish that is by going home every night." Although Posthumus occasionally stays in Lansing after a late session, these exceptions are relatively rare. "When I get home, there are four kids dngaround hollering, and all of a sudden I'm back to reality. There's no lobbyist taking me out to dinner telling me what a great legislator I am." "I can honestly say," he muses, "that I could walk away from this job tomorrow-not without some feeling of loss-but with no regret. -

It has also become clear in recent weeks that Trump has sought to advance his campaign’s goal of “voter suppression” by using the loudest microphone in the nation to implore his supporters to engage in unlawful intimidation at Michigan polling places. Trump’s exhortations have been amplified by direct and tacit assistance from the MRP and Stone, who helped pioneer similar tactics in the 1980s before those efforts were blocked by the federal courts. -

2017-20182017-2018 LEGISLATIVE BRIEFING BOOK 9999thth LEGISLATURELEGISLATURE THE STATE CAPITOL The State Capitol, the seat of state government, is the most widely recognized historic building in Michigan. Each year, thousands come to the Capitol to make their voices heard, see government in action, and learn how laws are made. However, Michigan’s statehouse is more than a place of business and lawmaking. It is also a national historic treasure that represents a successful marriage of 19th century art and architecture and 21st century technology. Dedicated on January 1, 1879, at a cost of approximately $1.4 million, it was the first of three capitols designed by Elijah Myers (the others are in Texas and Colorado) and was among the first to take its inspiration from the United States Capitol. Myers’ use of a central dome and balanced wings, like the nation’s capitol, set the standard for statehouses across the country. Over the years, hard use took a toll on the Capitol. The additions of electricity, telephones, and computers damaged the building’s art and architecture. Crowding became a constant problem. By the late 1960s, 50,000 square feet of new floor space had been created by subdividing the Capitol’s high- ceilinged rooms. Ornate plasterwork, wood trim, and decorative paint—some of the most elaborate and extensive in the nation—disappeared under drop ceilings, layers of plain paint, and wallboard. In 1989, a project to restore the Capitol began. Its success was the result of a highly successful collaboration among legislative leaders, the executive branch, and the public. -
