  • Racing Families – the Andrettis Hello and Welcome to a Brand New Episode in the Racing Families Mini-Series from Sidepodcast
Racing Families – The Andrettis Hello and welcome to a brand new episode in the Racing Families mini-series from Sidepodcast. As you may expect we’re looking at the great and the good from the world of motorsport, but particularly those that are keeping it in the family. Today, it’s time for a sprawling family legacy, and the name? Andretti. You’ve probably heard of Mario Andretti. He’s tried his hand at pretty much every type of racing there is on four wheels, and been largely successful too. The 73 year old American is now, naturally, retired, but in his sporting career he added to a long list of titles, and broke far too many records to mention. Mario was F1 World Champion in 1978, driving for Team Lotus, having joined the sport ten years earlier. Before that, in 1969, he won the Indy 500, which he continued to participate in for 29 years altogether. After his F1 stint, with a little bit of a crossover, he appeared in the CART series, winning that championship in 1984. He’s also tried his hand at NASCAR and the Le Mans 24 Hour race, with his best finish an overall second place. With this kind of DNA, it’s hardly surprising that the Andretti family are one of the more extensive in racing. Mario Andretti has a twin brother called Aldo, and in their very early days of racing, they built up a stock car together and took turns behind the wheel. They continued racing for about ten years, between 1959 and 69, but after two serious accidents, Aldo gave it up.

Buick’s Performance Legacy: 10 that Mattered Milestone vehicles that established and advanced the brand’s performance heritage DETROIT (Sunday, January 10, 2016) – Performance has been part of Buick’s DNA since its earliest days, when stripped-down chassis and powerful Buick engines pushed the pioneers of motorsports to victory. Racing success helped forge the brand’s reputation for durability. Now, more than a century later, that legacy of performance complements the refinement for which Buick has always been known. Here’s a look at 10 milestone models that helped establish and advance Buick’s performance heritage: 1. 1909 Buick racecar In 1909 – two years before the first Indianapolis 500 – the 2.5-mile-long oval at Indy was inaugurated with the Prest-O-Lite Trophy. The 250-mile race was won by Bob Burman, driving a Buick and averaging more than 85 km/h (53 mph). Of the nine cars that finished the race, three of them were Buick models. 2. 1910 Buick 60 Special “Bug” The 60 Special, or "Bug," was built by the Buick racing team and had a unique nosecone – a feature designed more for aesthetics than aerodynamics. A huge, 10.2L (622 cubic inches) four-cylinder engine propelled the Bug to 177 km/h (110 mph). Buick built two 60 Special racecars, one for Prest-O-Lite Trophy winner Bob Burman, and a second for another racer of note: Louis Chevrolet. 3. 1938 Buick Century Buick introduced straight-eight engines in 1931, but it was the 1938 Century model that established a new performance benchmark.

  • Here's What Seemed Like a Three-Part Recipe for Losing an Indy 500: 1
0 22 Here’s what seemed like a three-part recipe for losing an Indy 500: 1. Evict from the lobby of a plush hotel a year-old March rear-engine racing car; 2. Hire at the last instant a semi-retired old gaffer to race it; 3. Man it with a slap-dash and inexperienced crew whose members include an insurance-claims adjuster, a part-time truck driver, and a fabricator whose specialties aren’t dumping fuel or swapping rubber but boring into the insides of turbochargers Every odds-maker and Indy 500 handicapper going would have spent two minutes examining this hodge-podge and declared it the 1987 500’s biggest long- shot. And rightly so, because in its first and only experience of practicing together, which was during Carburetion Day’s final tune-up, the antique racing car, doddering racing driver, and butter- fingered crew successfully engineered ridiculous pit stops slower than two-thirds of the rest of the field of 33. Once the 500 started, the jittery old racing driver began performing to everybody’s worst expectations. First he barely escaped involvement in a big accident on the first corner of the opening lap. Next he fell a full lap behind – the worst thing that could have happened. And then, on his very first pit stop, his inexperienced crew did OK. But the 47-year-old racing driver was struck down with another case of nerves and stalled his engine. And then, after lots of odd things – very, very odd things – had occurred in the 500’s remaining 450 miles, this gang of no-hopes and their doddering driver had conquered the odds and won the Indy 71st 500.
