Malvern Hills (83) Ultra Road Map Start to CP1 (6.4 miles) Exit Holt Castle and bear left in front of the church. At 0.1 mile continue ahead through gate and uphill signposted Severn Way. At 0.26 miles through gate and straight on towards and through Caravan Sales Area signposted Severn Way. Follow S/W signs through gates and downhill to track at 0.62 miles where you turn right and immediate left. 0.9 miles reach tree line and go left over a style and then immediate right through the woods. TAKE CARE over small wooden bridge. At 1.0 miles, follow the Public Footpath through the sand & gravel area and at 1.1 miles use metal stairs to go over the conveyor and head for Church straight ahead. Enter Churchyard through gate, across and down on the road, bear left with Wagon Wheel pub on right. Follow road as it goes behind the pub. 1.6 miles bear right along the Severn Way. 2.7 miles reach Bevere Lock, continue on the Severn Way 2.9 miles reach the Camp Pub OS835592; go through and around beer garden and back onto the river path Severn Way 5.9 miles turn left over Main Worcester Bridge. The Severn Way is now on the opposite side of the river so you need to cross over at this point and then continue along the river. TAKE CARE TRAFFIC. 6.4 miles – You have reached CP1 (Diglis Hotel OS849542) Closes 8.30am Navigation Difficulty Rating: Low, generally follow river footpath Course Type: Flat, if wet it could be rather muddy CP1 to CP2 (9.58 miles) Continue along river path, 0.5 miles go around dock area and continue on path. 0.71 miles towpath closed due to construction work, turn left. 0.91 miles enter playing fields on right and keep right, enter moor at far end and keep right with the industrial works on right, path leads back to river footpath at 1.29 miles. 2.4 miles, go under the A4440 Bridge (OS853517) 2.77 miles off towpath into fields, continue of the Severn Way 3.72 miles, holiday homes on left 5.14 miles track leaves towpath, up steps then bear right continuing along the river path. Going through several gates, at 8.92 miles halt at the wooded area and at OS854431 you MUST use “Punch Point 1” within box 1 of your card. (You need to do this in order to avoid 10 minute time penalties added to your final race time. Please ensure you show the card as punched to one of the CP Stewards at CP2) 9.48 miles reach the main road (A38) and bear left along the path. Continue till 9.58 miles – You have reached CP2 (The Rose & Crown OS857441) Closes 10.30am Navigation Difficulty Rating: Low, generally follow river footpath Course Type: Flat, if wet it could be rather muddy Failure to punch your card at OS854431 will result in a 10 minute time penalty added to your finishing time. CP2 to CP3 (9.37 miles) From CP2 back to main road, bear right onto the same road you just approached on. Continue for 0.31 miles and take a right sign-posted Severn Way Footpath. Continue through several gates until at 1.06 miles you reach the river path Through several gates and at 2.54 miles climb gate to main road and bridge, cross bridge and then bear immediate sharp left in front of the Plough Pub and continue along the River Severn. At 5.81 miles you will reach the M50 Motorway Bridge OS867368, continue under along the Severn Way. Over two small bridges and several gates and styles you will reach the A438 at 8.28 miles OS889337, cross the bridge to the other side of the river and continue to main road (A38) and go right along the footpath, 8.43 miles. At 8.79 miles go right down steps sign-posted Severn Way and along canal path. At 8.94 miles over bridge and immediate right along canal path At 9.01 miles over bridge and left along canal path At 9.34 miles cross bridge at Abbey Mill, just over bridge behind the mill in the car park, OS893330, is CP3, (Victorian Pleasure Gardens). 9.37 miles. Closes 1.00pm Navigation Difficulty Rating: Low, generally following River Severn signs, but care taken for the last mile. Follow directions. Competitors coming into the CP from the wrong direction will incur a 10 minute time penalty. Course Type: Flat, mainly river bank, field running. CP3 to CP4 (8.08 miles) Head through Victoria Pleasure Gardens and then through car-park (Take Care), at 0.23 miles go right into Lower Lode Lane sign-posted Severn Way. At 0.82 miles continue on river bank past Cheltenham College Boat House. Continue through various gates along the river bank. At 3.51 miles go past the Coal House Inn and through Caravan Park following Severn Way signs. At 4.3 miles exit river bank and cross over main road bridge continuing ahead on footpath, OS845278. At 5.35 miles (Take Care) as footpath ends but continue or road, using grass verge when possible. At 6.61 miles reach road and go left signposted Gloucester (Take Care) no footpath, use grass verges, OS813293 At 7.07 miles go right into Straight Lane OS807289 At 8.08 miles you reach CP4, (The Swan Inn at Staunton), OS792295, Closes 3.50pm Navigation Difficulty Rating: Low, generally following River Severn signs, and these directional signs. Course Type: Flat, 50% river bank, 50% road running. CP4 to CP5 (7.41 miles) Out of the Swan car-park continue left up the lane, at 0.3 miles go right into Moat Lane, OS787294. At 0.75 miles take left fork where there is a sign for various locations including Longacre. At 0.9 miles bear right and at 0.92 through gate sign-posted Three Choirs Way Over and through various styles and gates and at 1.32 miles over gate on right and into field OS780302. At 1.49 miles straight over lane, at 1.62 miles take left fork but keep right. Continue over gates following Three Choirs Way, at 2.2 miles over gate to farm and keep right of farm-house. At 2.26 miles exit through farms gates to road and bear left then immediate right over gate into field. At 2.96 miles reach lane bear left and at 3.02 miles take right lane towards Bromesberrow At 3.28 miles go under the M50 motorway bridge OS778330 At 3.49 miles reach T junction and go left to Bromesberrow Continue over various styles and at 4.23 miles over two styles bearing left to road, over road to right and take style into field. At 4.63 miles over footbridge, 4.94 miles reach lane and bear right. At 5.05 miles at road junction continue towards Hollybush. At 5.76 miles go under sandstone bridge then immediately right climb steep bank track to get to top of bridge and continue left along track up woods. At 5.77 miles straight over main road OS764369, at 6.59 miles bear right on upward track. At 6.81 mile by bench take left path and then continue path to right around hill. At 7.35 miles continue straight ahead then go down left track to car park, cross park and over road (TAKE CARE) – 7.41 miles, you have arrived at CP5 (Malvern Hills Hotel OS763404) Closes 5.50pm Navigation Difficulty Rating: High, Three Choirs Way is poorly sign-posted and map reading, navigation skills are required. Course Type: 85% Flat off road, 10% hilly at the end CP5 to CP6 (6.6 miles) Go right out of CP5 and immediately past the hotel take left track leading to another car park, then 0.15 miles take left track, 0.28 miles take right track up to peak, continue on track going over all peaks. Along the track & peaks you will find a total of four “Punch Points” all with 10 minute time penalties so it is essential you keep to the course. At OS768421 - This is a “Punch Point 4” which you MUST use within box 4 of your card. (Please ensure you show the card as punched to one of the CP Stewards at CP6) .01 miles - reach road (B4218), cross over road (TAKE CARE) and go right into Beacon Rd. 2.12 miles – continue up track on right, 2.6 miles follow gravel path around hill on the right. At OS769437 - This is a “Punch Point 5” which you MUST use within box 5 of your card. (Please ensure you show the card as punched to one of the CP Stewards at CP6) 2.84 miles – on left highest point of the Malvern Hills, 1,395 ft OS768453. This is also a “Punch Point 6” which you MUST use within box 6 of your card. (Please ensure you show the card as punched to one of the CP Stewards at CP6) 3.09 miles continue path around hill straight ahead, 3.3 miles continue straight towards the North Malvern, 3.96 miles continue on track to right. 4.38 miles (OS770467)continue around hill on same track. This is also a “Punch Point 7” which you MUST use within box 7 of your card. (Please ensure you show the card as punched to one of the CP Stewards at CP6) 4.58 miles turn right acutely back, stone sign West Malvern OS765465.
