    The Lewisham District On Line at www.lewishamdistrict.org.uk THE KENT COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF CHANGE RINGERS www.kcacr.org.uk OCTOBER 2012 L to R David Macey, Mark Chittenden-Pile, Steve Bailey, Gwen Rogers, Phil Rogers, Ian Mills (c), Peter Swift, Colin Wyld, Liz Barnes, Paul Butler Sadly, bell ringing is not an Olympic sport, but if it was, Team Kent would surely have come back with a gold medal this year, for their winning performance in the Essex Trophy competition. After two consecutive years of coming second, this year, we finally succeeded in winning the Essex Trophy, for the first time in 27 years. All we had to do was to beat Guildford, who beat us last year, Essex who beat us the year before, and Sussex, who, this year, had the home advantage. The weather in Lewes was warm and sunny on 8th September, and the local ringers made everyone very welcome, with plenty of refreshments available, as we waited for the latecomers to arrive, including the judges, Alan and Mark Ainsworth. Perhaps the difference this year was down to the lack of opportunities we had to ring together as a complete band prior to the competition, making everyone try that little bit harder? Whatever the reason, the band started the test piece confidently, rang better than we had managed in any of the practices, and continued to ring at a high standard right up to the end. I would like to thank everyone in the team for ringing so well on the day, everyone else who helped out during the practice pro- gramme, and those who rang for us last year and the year before, for the part they played in helping us to bring the Essex Trophy back to Kent! Lord Darnley died last June after many years of being our Chairman. Since then two early trustees have also died, Sir John Cotterell who was appointed in 1970 and Henry Moore who was appointed in 1976. We look back on their time with the Trust with much gratitude and affection and hope that we, as their successors, can continue their work into the future in a grant-giving environment which is constantly changing. It was only in the mid 1970s that interest was taken by government in the repair of churches.

The early missionaries used small hand bells to call people to worship, with bells being introduced into Christian churches around 400 AD. In 750 AD the Bishop of York ordered all Priests to toll bells at certain times. The Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canter- bury hung bells in all churches under their care during the late 10th Century and gave rules for their use. Bells were also used to warn people of an attack by invading armies. Before the reign of Henry V111 and the Protestant Reformation most bells in churches were hung on a simple spindle and chimed by the Deacons pulling a rope. Thereafter ringers began to experiment with new ways of hanging the bell to get greater control.

    2. Sheep bell Associate Director - Archive Services, Guy Baxter, shares the extraordinary history of the next 51 Voices choice, an animal bell with a performative past. This object sits in the Museum's stores, packed beside a vast array of similar items. Seeing it resting silently alongside so many other bells, little would you know this example has a far more metropolitan sound to its story, linking to fame, festivity, and the foundation of another cultural institution. Whitechapel Bell Foundry, Sheep bell used as a prop, early 1950s What could be more rural than a sheep bell? Hung around the neck to enable the shepherd to locate each animal, there is evidence that these have been used in livestock farming since Neolithic times. Animal bells, particularly cow bells, have seeped into the culture of many countries (most notably in European Alpine countries such as Switzerland). Yet the story of this particular bell can take us on a journey that is decidedly urban. This will come as no surprise to those familiar with The MERL galleries, where stories of Town and Country fill one of our largest spaces. As our audience’s direct connection to the countryside has dwindled (in line with trends in British society), this is a way of connecting people to stories that lie not so far in their community’s past. But it also reminds us that the links between the rural and urban are never far away. In this case they come not as single sheep but in flocks.     The Mathematics of Bell Ringing Professor Sarah Hart 5 January 2021 This lecture will look at change ringing, which is ringing a series of tuned bells (as you might find in the bell tower of a church) in a particular sequence, and this has exciting mathematical properties. Along the way we will discuss how bells are made and tuned and give brief highlights from the history of bell ringing. Introduction Bells are the loudest, and one of the oldest, instruments. They are present in cultures across the world. A tolling bell can call people to prayer, warn of emergency, or ring out in celebration. The sounds of bells punctuate our lives, from the handbell in the playground to the chimes of Big Ben. They can mark the end of life too. Ask not for whom the bell tolls, says the poet; it tolls for thee. Today I want to talk about a particularly British (and actually mainly English) thing – the style of bell ringing known as change ringing. It arose here for a variety of reasons which we’ll discuss along the way. We’ll begin with a question. Suppose you have a set of eight bells (or more properly a ring, which is the collective noun) in your church tower, and you want to use them to make a pleasing sound. You could, for example, ring down the notes of the scale repeatedly. Usually, bells in a ring of 푛 bells are numbered highest (treble) to lowest (tenor), 1 to 푛. So, our eight bells rung in order from highest to lowest would be 12345678.
