They should go into the game with some confidence, however, having finally ended a competition-record 15-game winless run by defeating Lazio 2-0 in Nicosia on their last outing. Previous meetings • Marseille's only point in the group came from their matchday two draw at Apollon. It would have been three but for a spirited late fightback from their hosts, who came from two goals down to draw with a 90th-minute equaliser from Emilio Zelaya. That was the first time the clubs had met in UEFA competition. • Marseille's only previous home fixture against Cypriot opposition was a 5-1 win against Apollon's local rivals AEL Limassol in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League. However, as now, OM did not qualify from their group. • Apollon have lost both of their two previous games in France without scoring, a 4-0 defeat at Lyon in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage still fresh in the memory. Form guide Marseille • Marseille finished fourth in last season's Ligue 1 to claim an immediate return to the UEFA Europa League. • This is the Cote d'Azur club's fourth UEFA Europa League group stage participation. They failed to reach the knockout phase at the first attempt, in 2012/13, but managed to do so in 2015/16 and 2017/18, going all the way in the latter to the final in Lyon, where they lost 3-0 to Atlético Madrid. They were runners-up also in the 1998/99 and 2003/04 UEFA Cups. • Marseille staged ten UEFA Europa League matches at home last season – from the third qualifying round to the semi-finals – and won nine of them. However, they have lost both Stade Vélodrome fixtures in this season's campaign, against Eintracht Frankfurt (1-2) and Lazio (1-3). Apollon • Domestic runners-up in league and cup last term, Apollon's sixth successive season in the UEFA Europa League kicked off in the first qualifying round, where they got the better of Lithuania's Stumbras before ousting Željezničar of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dinamo Brest of Belarus and, on away goals in the play-offs, Basel. • Apollon have been in three previous UEFA Europa League group campaigns – a fourth is a record for a Cypriot club – but have never progressed beyond this stage, finishing third in their section in 2013/14 and fourth in both 2014/15 and 2017/18. • The Limassol club have lost seven of their last eight European away fixtures, and all of the last four. Their away record in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W1 D1 L9, the win having come in their first such fixture, 1-0 at Legia Warszawa on matchday two of the 2013/14 campaign. Links and trivia • Fotis Papoulis is one goal away from becoming Apollon's joint top scorer in Europe alongside Milenko Špoljarić (11). • Apollon's Burkina Faso international defender Dylan Ouedraogo was born in Marseille. Other French-born players who have appeared for the Cypriot club in this group stage are Kévin Bru, David Faupala, Valentin Roberge and Richard Soumah. • Apollon are one of four clubs to have reached this season's group stage after starting their campaign in the first qualifying round. The others are FC København, Rangers and Sarpsborg, all of whom, unlike Apollon, can still progress further in the competition. The coaches • Marseille coach since October 2016, Rudi Garcia started out as a midfielder at LOSC Lille, returning to coach the club between 2008 and 2013 and masterminding their Ligue 1/Coupe de France double in 2010/11. He subsequently spent two and a half seasons in charge of Roma, leading the Giallorossi to back-to-back runners-up spots in Serie A. In 2017/18 he steered OM from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League all the way to the final in Lyon, where they were defeated by Atlético Madrid. 3 Olympique de Marseille - Apollon Limassol FC Thursday 13 December 2018 - 18.55CET (18.55 local time) Match press kit Stade Vélodrome, Marseille • Sofronis Avgousti has coached home-town team Apollon since December 2016, when, as caretaker, he led the club to victory in each of his first eight league matches and to a successful defence of the Cypriot Cup. He has since steered them into back-to-back UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns. Capped 11 times by Cyprus, he previously served the Limassol club in three separate spells as a goalkeeper and was also on the books of AEK Larnaca, Aris Limassol and APOEL. 4 Olympique de Marseille - Apollon Limassol FC Thursday 13 December 2018 - 18.55CET (18.55 local time) Match press kit Stade Vélodrome, Marseille Team facts Olympique de Marseille Formed: 1899 Nicknames: Les Olympiens (The Olympians), Les Phocéens (The Phocians), OM UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • European Cup (1): (1991), 1993 • UEFA Cup: (1999), (2004), (2018) • UEFA Intertoto Cup (1): 2005 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 9 (2010) French Cup: 10 (1989) League Cup: 3 (2012) Ten-year record (UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup unless indicated otherwise) 2017/18: runners-up 2016/17: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2015/16: round of 32 2014/15: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2013/14: UEFA Champions League group stage 2012/13: group stage 2011/12: UEFA Champions League quarter-finals 2010/11: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2009/10: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2008/09: quarter-finals (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 7-1: Marseille v US Luxembourg 03/10/73, UEFA Cup first round second leg 6-0: Marseille v CSKA Moskva 17/03/93, UEFA Champions League group stage • Biggest away win 0-7: Žilina v Marseille 03/11/10, UEFA Champions League group stage • Heaviest home defeat 0-4: Marseille v Liverpool 11/12/07, UEFA Champions League group stage • Heaviest away defeat 6-0: Köln v Marseille 06/11/73, UEFA Cup second round second leg UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup • Biggest home win 7-1: Marseille v US Luxembourg (see above) • Biggest away win 0-5: US Luxembourg v Marseille 18/09/73, first round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 1-3: Marseille v Lazio 25/10/18, group stage • Heaviest away defeat 6-0: Köln v Marseille (see above) Apollon Limassol Formed: 1954 Nickname: Thrylos (Legend) 5 Olympique de Marseille - Apollon Limassol FC Thursday 13 December 2018 - 18.55CET (18.55 local time) Match press kit Stade Vélodrome, Marseille UEFA club competition honours • None Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 3 (2006) Cypriot Cup: 9 (2017) Ten-year record (UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup unless indicated otherwise) 2017/18: group stage 2016/17: third qualifying round 2015/16: third qualifying round 2014/15: group stage 2013/14: group stage 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA competition 2011/12: did

  • Ligue 1 Guide 2021/22
2021/2022 Ligue 1 Preview Guide INTRODUCTION After a historically close title race that saw four teams in the running Ligue 1 is back with no small amount of fanfare following a busy summer. Of those four sides, while Lille and Lyon have been relatively quiet as they try to consolidate under new managers, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain have been eager participants in the mercato, buying well in a way that addresses the two sides’ needs. Nice and Rennes have also done some canny business in the offseason, to say nothing of Marseille’s flood of arrivals, but the discussions about pro- spective title favorites in France have to start and end with the capital side. Even as rumors swirl around the potential departure of Kylian Mbappé, it’s hard to argue that Paris Saint-Ger- main haven’t done their utmost to convince their young star to stay. At least, that is, if one judges by their transfer activity. The arrivals of Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Achraf Hakimi have bolstered Mauricio Pochettino’s side in key areas whilst also adding another layer of dynamism. If he can keep his squad happy and balanced, this team looks as potent as any in Europe, Elsewhere, Monaco are probably best-equipped to challenge, even as they will have to contend with playing European football. The arrivals of Myron Boadu, Alexander Nübel and Ismail Jakobs look to be upgrades, and so long as Niko Kovac’s exciting, front-foot football remains in place and so do all of its key elements.

  • The Gffn 100 2018: Ten to Watch
GFFN 100 2018 THE GFFN 100: AN INTRODUCTION Welcome to another edition of the Get French Football News 100. Published at the end of ev- ery year by GFFN, the guide you are reading is as detailed and comprehensive a set of player profiles as one is likely to find, especially in English. Some of these players are well-known, even to the casual fan, and though they have been the subjects of countless profiles, we hope that you can gain a bit more depth in knowledge of their stories. This is especially true with the likes of Neymar and his Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappé. In 2018, neither was ever far from the limelight in a year in which France won the World Cup, thanks in large part to the teen- age sensation. Neymar may have garnered the odd headline for less positive reasons, but both remain as compelling off the pitch as they do on it. It is thus no surprise to see Mbappé top the rankings again; it does not take much objectivity to realise his immense talent and potential, but the present document is much more than a narra- tive driven by celebrity. We have watched the matches that do not generate headlines, seen the teams that are rarely on television, especially internationally, and artfully blended statistical anal- ysis with old-fashioned scouting to create what we feel is a definitive guide to the professionals currently plying their trade in France. If some rankings seem high, or low, read the profiles before making a snap decision as to our choices; this is a meritocracy.
