With a distance of 129 km/80 mi, the race links Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora in the Leeward Islands. The ob- jective of the race from the very first edition was to promote open ocean outrigger canoeing on a regio- nal and international scope. HAWAIKI NUI VA’A VA’A IN V6 OUTRIGGER CANOE RACE FRENCH POLYNESIA 24th Edition November 4, 5 and 6, 2015 Va’a is the Tahitian word for outrigger canoe, a type of craft visible throughout all the islands in French Polynesia. In Pre-European traditional civilization, the va’a was at the heart of daily life of the island com- PREVIOUS munities as a means of transport, communication and different types of fishing. EDITIONS With globalization, these functions have gradually disappeared and been replaced by the “era of canoe races”, TE HOERA’A VA’A. EDT VA’A won the last Hawaiki Nui Va’a with a time of 09:54:58 followed by Va’a racing is divided into two types.     Tahiti: Society Islands 10-night: Tahiti to Raiatea Ta hiti to Moore a 12 miles – 2 hours. Sail on a following breeze to Vaiare bay on Moorea.. Day 1 Fly into Papeete International airport on Tahiti and take a ten-minute taxi ride to the marina at Taiana on Tahiti. Arrive at the marina for boarding at 12:00hrs. Board the yacht and enjoy lunch on board followed by your first sail across to Moorea island. Moor overnight in Vaiare Bay off the largest white sand beach on Moorea. Dinner: Enjoy your first taste of the tropics prepared by your ship’s cook. Moorea to Raiatea 100 miles – 12 hours. Open ocean passage on a beam reach. Day 2 MOOREA: Motor around the headland to Opunohu Bay for a half-day, optional guided excursion to so see Belvedere lookout, the pineapple road and an early Polynesian historical site. In the afternoon, hang-out at the Tiki bar ashore, snorkel with the sand rays or do some paddle boarding. After dinner follow the Polynesian stars on an overnight passage to Raiatea. Dinner: Enjoy a fantastic French Polynesian meal served aboard. Raiatea 7 miles – 1 hour. Motoring within the lagoon. Day 3 RAIATEA: Arrive at dawn and enter the lagoon of Raiatea through the southeast barrier reef passage. Anchor in the shallow sand and enjoy a hardy breakfast before taking a guided snorkel tour in the inflatable with your skipper. There are also paddleboards and kayaks to explore the turquoise waters. After lunch, motor through the lagoon to an anchorage at the mouth of the Faaroa river, to explore this winding stream and the exotic flora and wildlife by dinghy.
