Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night.

  • Characteristics of Elite Swimmers
by Haydn Belshaw SEPTEMBER 2015 CharacteristicsCharacteristics ofof eliteelite swimmersswimmers There are many athletes and in particular ex-athletes who often wonder what could have been. Why didn’t I make a National team? Why did I not win the gold medal? Why did I not get selected for the high-performance squad. And I dare say there would be many coaches who ask the same questions of their athletes. But what really makes an athlete elite? What is within our sphere of influence and how can we use this information to target the right programs to the right athletes? What is the ideal age for an elite swimmer and what other individual characteristics should we be aware of in the development of high performing swimmers? The content below is not exhaustive, as we all know each individual athlete (and coach) is unique, but it is a helpful summary of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that should be taken into consideration. Age Whilst traditionally Australia have had success with younger This process has been happening now for the last three National athletes compete at international level, such as Shane Gould (15 Age Championships, with athletes who were identified through the years of age), Ian Thorpe (14 years of age), Keiren Perkins (14 years Talent Scouting Program being added straight onto the Swimming of age), as mentioned previously, the average age of the Australian Australia’s Talent Camp. swimmers in Beijing (2008) was 23 years with none of our men’s team below the age of 20 years. You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.

  • The City of Newark
TO ALL President’s Message Inductees, Scholarship Recipients, Family and Friends, It is with great honor that I welcome you tonight, to our 30nd Annual Newark Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Dinner. Since 1988, we have been honoring athletes from public and private schools in and around the City of Newark. Our initial purpose was to focus attention on Newark’s glorious past and its bright future by creating a positive environment where friendships, camaraderie and memories can be renewed. Tonight we continue that tradition with eighteen new Inductees and four Scholarship Awardees. The Honorees have proven, as in the past, that they are to be recognized as true role models, a characteristic very much in need these days, whether in a large city or a small town. You can turn to a bio page in this or any one of the previous twenty-nine books of inductees and find a role model you can be proud to emulate. The hallmarks of a good athlete are dedication, desire, teamwork, hard work, time management and good sportsmanship. These are the same qualities necessary to succeed in the classroom and the workplace. That’s why our Hall of Fame Family of Inductees are to be viewed as success stories, on and off the field. To our Scholarship Award Winners, you have been recognized to possess the characteristics outlined above; therefore, we wish you good fortune in college and hope to see you back here one evening on the dais, as a future Inductee into the Hall of Fame. Finally, as Newark has become a hotbed for professional and college sports alike, we must not forget the high school and recreation level athletes and support their efforts.
