From Fr. Fred’s Desk . .

At Vatican II the addressed the often-asked question about who can be saved. I would encourage all to read that portion of the document. [Lumen Gentium, #14-16] Regarding Catholics and the question of salvation, the bishops wrote, “one who does not however persevere in charity is not saved. He remains indeed in the bosom of the Church, but “in body” not “in heart.” Love defines whether we live in the heart of the church or on its periphery. This month as we have read from the Letter of James, the author has reminded us of the importance of a “living” faith, a faith lived from the heart of the church. Remember several weeks ago we were told that faith without works is a dead faith. Last week the author of the Letter of James reminded us that heavenly wisdom is full of mercy and good fruits whereas earthly wisdom creates conflicts and fights. This week’s reading from the Letter of James speaks about love in terms of treating others with justice: “Behold, the wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying (out and) have reached the ears of the Lord.” Living in love is what it means to be a Christian or another “.” Today’s reminds us of the consequences of not living in love. The image that uses has always frightened me: “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believes in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” As we examine our lives, do we live in the “body” of the church or in its “heart?” Love is the difference. As Jesus said: “Love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends.” [:12-13]. On another note, Larry and Kathy Byrn are moving closer to their children. Both have been very active in our parish. Larry has served as our maintenance person over the last few years, sharing his problem solving and repairing skills. We will miss both. Now the question is which parishioners will step forward to fill Larry’s shoes. hoping that we can have some maintenance repair teams where each team helps out once a month. Any volunteers?

¿Algunos voluntarios?

Congregation of the Missionaries of St.

Dear People of God of St. !

I am here to do my Mission Appeal. Before coming to USA, I worked in Mozambique for nearly 9 years. Our Missionaries are working in the poorest of the poor country of this Continent since 2001. We have Priests, and seminarians from working for the people of God of Africa. We have five Parishes. Most of the communities have the chapels made of Grass with old tins or thatched roofs above. And other communities do not have even this small structure. Our Missionaries would like to build small Chapels in each community. That is why I am here to appeal for help to build a few Chapels. We request you to help our Missionaries and the people of God of Mozambique to pray well and in a proper place. Thank you so much.

May God Bless you and your generosity, Fr. Kailas Hivale

The Fire of Your Love: St. the

By Will Oliver

Hark! St. Michael the Archangel! Glorious prince so bold, Chief and commander in , This is your story told.

“St. Michael the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.” After Leo XIII celebrated Mass one day, he was seen staring off at something, as if looking at someone; someone who was not there. He then went into his private office and wrote down the St. Michael prayer. After revealing the prayer, Pope Leo instituted the practice that after Low Mass, the prayer was to be recited by the congregation. That practice ended with Vatican II, but if you go to Daily Mass here at St. Thomas, that tradition continues. St. Michael is one of seven . Archangels are one of the nine orders of , being the lowest after angels. Archangels are, in a way, angels with a high rank and a special mission, to serve as God’s messengers. Two of the other well-known archangels are and . There are other named archangels, such as Uriel, but only Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael appear in the . Michael is named in his most famous passage in the (12: 7-9) in which he fights a war in heaven. The war was fought because Lucifer (Light Bearer) claimed he was going to be like God, and many of the angels decided to follow him. Michael led the good angels to victory, then cast Satan and all of the fallen angels down to earth. Michael is also specifically named an “archangel” in the of Jude (1:9) where he is said to have been fighting with Satan over the body of . Nothing more is said about this in , but most scholars trace this back to the Assumption of Moses, an extra-Biblical account. The story is that after Moses died, his body was secreted away and buried. Satan, however, found the location and wanted to take the and use them to convince people they should worship Moses and not Jesus (Jesus had some problems with this issue himself). Michael confronted Satan and won yet another victory. Michael also appears in the Book of Daniel (10:13-21), and is named as the protector of Israel. More importantly, he is seen as the who will rise at the end times and sit at the Final Judgement. This is why he is often depicted with a set of scales, for he weighs the difference between our good and evil deeds. It is said that on Judgement Day there will be two books, a larger book with the names of the sinners who will be assigned to hell, and a smaller book naming those who will enter heaven. Michael is depicted holding the smaller book in Michelangelo’s painting on the wall of the Sistine Chapel. As I mentioned previously, St. Michael is featured in Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. He appears in his role as God’s warrior when he defeats Satan in Book VI. He then returns in Books XI and XII where he is charged with es- corting Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. St. Michael is the patron of police and military soldiers, and his feast day is September 29.
