Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and total hypericins (TH) were determined by spectro- photometric methods, and the identification and quantitation of polyphenolic compounds by LC/UV/MS. Ethanolic extracts were the richest in total phenols (8.85%), flavonoids (4.52%) and total hypericins (0.12%). Gentisic, caffeic and chlorogenic acids, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, rutin, quercitrin, and quercetin were identified and quantified by HPLC/UV/MS. The antioxidant potential determined by DPPH assay showed a better antioxidant activity for H. humifusum ethanolic extract and a positive correlation between the antioxidant properties, TPC and TFC. Antimicrobial activity by dilution assays, minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration were assessed. H. humifusum aerial parts represent an important alternative source of natural antioxidants and antimicrobials. -

Accepted 23 April, 2012 Hypericum perforatum is known as St. John's Wort. H. perforatum extracts and essential oil are important in drug development with numerous pharmacological activities around the world, including Iran. For a long time, H. perforatum has been used in traditional medicines for healing skin wounds, eczema, burns, diseases of the alimentary tract, and psychological disorders especially depression. H. perforatum has recently been shown to have antioxidant, anticonvulsant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antidiabetic activities. Hypericin, pseudohypericin, hyperoside, rutin, quercetin and hyperforin are the main compounds which are reported in this plant. α-Pinene, caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, germacrene D and 2-methyloctane were identified as the major constituents for H. perforatum essential oil collected from different parts of the world. Due to the easy collection of the plant, its widespread and also remarkable biological activities, this plant has become a medicine worldwide. This review presents comprehensive analyzed information on the botanical, chemical and pharmacological aspects of H. perforatum at preclinical and clinical levels. The Burren 2018 species list and trip report, 7th-12th June 2018 WILDLIFE TRAVEL The Burren 2018 s 1 The Burren 2018 species list and trip report, 7th-12th June 2018 Day 1: 7th June: Arrive in Lisdoonvarna; supper at Rathbaun Hotel Arriving by a variety of routes and means, we all gathered at Caherleigh House by 6pm, sustained by a round of fresh tea, coffee and delightful home-made scones from our ever-helpful host, Dermot. After introductions and some background to the geology and floral elements in the Burren from Brian (stressing the Mediterranean component of the flora after a day’s Mediterranean heat and sun), we made our way to the Rathbaun, for some substantial and tasty local food and our first taste of Irish music from the three young ladies of Ceolan, and their energetic four-hour performance (not sure any of us had the stamina to stay to the end). Day 2: 8th June: Poulsallach At 9am we were collected by Tony, our driver from Glynn’s Coaches for the week, and following a half-hour drive we arrived at a coastal stretch of species-rich limestone pavement which represented the perfect introduction to the Burren’s flora: a stunningly beautiful mix of coastal, Mediterranean, Atlantic and Arctic-Alpine species gathered together uniquely in a natural rock garden. First impressions were of patchy grassland, sparkling with heath spotted- orchids Dactylorhiza maculata ericetorum and drifts of the ubiquitous and glowing-purple bloody crane’s-bill Geranium sanguineum, between bare rock. A closer look revealed a diverse and colourful tapestry of dozens of flowers - the yellows of goldenrod Solidago virgaurea, kidney-vetch Anthyllis vulneraria, and bird’s-foot trefoil Lotus corniculatus (and its attendant common blue butterflies Polyommatus Icarus), pink splashes of wild thyme Thymus polytrichus and the hairy local subspecies of lousewort Pedicularis sylvatica ssp. -

However, recent investigations highlighted that this species could be advantageous for the cure of other pathological situations, such as trigeminal neuralgia, as well as in the treatment of cancer. This review focuses on the in vitro and in vivo antitumor effects of St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum), its derivatives, and other Hypericum species in hematologic malignancies. -

Variability of Hypericins and Hyperforin in Hypericum Species from the Sicilian Flora
Chemistry & Biodiversity, Volume17, Issue1, January 2020, e1900596 Variability of Hypericins and Hyperforin in Hypericum Species from the Sicilian Flora Silvia Lazzara, Alessandra Carrubba, Edoardo Napoli Abstract Within Sicilian flora, the genus Hypericum (Guttiferae) includes 10 native species, the most popular of which is H. perforatum. Hypericum’s most investigated active compounds belong to naphtodianthrones (hypericin, pseudohypericin) and phloroglucinols (hyperforin, adhyperforin), and the commercial value of the drug is graded according to its total hypericin content. Ethnobotanical sources attribute the therapeutic properties recognized for H. perforatum, also to other Hypericum species. However, their smaller distribution inside the territory suggests that an industrial use of such species, when collected from the wild, would result in an unacceptable depletion of their natural stands. This study investigated about the potential pharmacological properties of 48 accessions from six native species of Hypericum, including H. perforatum and five ‘minor’ species, also comparing, when possible, wild and cultivated sources. The variability in the content of active metabolites was remarkably high, and the differences within the species were often comparable to the differences among species. No difference was enlightened between wild and cultivated plants. A carefully planned cultivation of Hypericum seems the best option to achieve high and steady biomass yields, but there is a need for phytochemical studies, aimed to identify for multiplication the genotypes with the highest content of the active metabolites. Millepertuis (Hypericum) – Famille : Hypericacées Les millepertuis utilisés pour l’ornement de nos jardins sont uniquement constitués de petits arbustes dont la hauteur s’échelonne d’une cinquantaine de centimètres à environ 1,20 m. Cependant, il en existe quelques uns qui se présentent comme de véritables arbustes ou petits arbres, mais également de nombreuses plantes vivaces ou annuelles. Leur intérêt est essentiellement porté par leurs fleurs jaunes possédant majoritairement 5 pétales, à leurs très nombreuses étamines, parfois à leur fruits constitués de capsules. Principe de ramification La très grande majorité des millepertuis se régénèrent naturellement par la formation de nouvelles pousses issues directement de la souche, de la base des rameaux (basitonie), ou parfois issues de la partie médiane (arcures). Exceptionnellement, les nouvelles pousses ne se forment qu’en extrémité des rameaux préexistants (acrotonie). Principe de floraison Tous les millepertuis laissent apparaître leur floraison en extrémité des pousses formées au cours de l’année. Parfois, la floraison est cependant plus abondante sur les bois courts issus de ramifications secondaires formées sur des bois plus âgés. La taille des millepertuis Hypericum inodorum ‘Elstead’ Bien que ce millepertuis soit capable de former une mini charpente, la floraison et la qualité du feuillage ne sont jamais si belles que quand les plantes sont rabattues totalement annuellement, en fin d’hiver. Taille de plantation Rabattre les plantes à quelques centimètres du sol. En l’absence de taille (photo de gauche), Hypericum inodorum ‘Elstead’ se dégarnit très vite et son port présente peu d’intérêt. Rabattu sur la souche chaque année, il développe des rameaux vigoureux, un feuillage sain, et présente de délicates inflorescences jaunes. -
