PAGE LEONARD CALVERT, FIRST .-Repro duced from Side-Lights on Maryland History, by Hester Dorsey Richardson, with the consent of the author, from an original picture in her possession. In two vessels-the "Ark" and the "Dove" provided by the Proprietary, Lord Baltimore, Leonard Calvert, brother of Lord Balti more, commissioned as Lieutenant-General, embarked with about two hundred Colonists at Gravesend in October, 1633, arriving at Point Comfort February 27,1634. Thence they sailed up the Potomac to St. Clement's Island, where they took formal possession of Maryland. After this landing Calvert explored a tributary stream, now called the St. Mary's, until he came to an Indian village, where, after an agreement with the Indians, on March 27, 16340 he disembarked and called their new home St. Mary's • . THE CORWIN-CURWIN HOUSE, SALEM, MASSACHUSETTs.-From a photograph published in 188~.. by E. Whitefield, Reading, XVIll NOTES ON ILLUSTRATIONS

PAGB Massachusetts, bearing the following legend: "This house, still standing at the corner of Essex and North Streets, Salem, was built and occupied by Roger Williams, the Founder of Rhode Island, about 1634. After his banish ment the house came into the possession of Capt. Richard Davenport, who, from 1645 to 1665, was commander of the fort at Castle Islands in Boston Harbor. In 1675 Jonathan Corwin, one of the Judges of the Special Court during the Witchcraft Trials, purchased the house, and it remained in the possession of his descendants until 1856. During this long period it has undergone many changes and the general appearance of the building bears little re semblance to its original form. The above picture repre sents, it is confidently believed, the house as it was when Roger Williams left it in 1636." As a matter of fact, this is a reproduction of a colored drawing nOW in the Essex In stitute, Salem, Massachusetts. The original was prob ably made about 1820 and is imaginary, save along its general lines, it having been made upon tradition and descriptions given by old people. The fundamental point rests in the fact that Roger Williams never lived in the house. The house is the Corwin-Curwin house, other wise known as the "Witch House," where l'reliminary examinations of accused persons were held. Roger Wil liams lived in the house previously occupied by his suc cessor, Higginson. The house was located in a part of what is now Washington Street, Salem, and disappeared very many years ago. The above information was fur nished by George Francis Dow of the Essex Institute, Salem, Massachusetts 222 REDUCED FACSIMILE OF FIRST PAGE OF THE ORIGINAL CHARTER OF RHODE ISLAND, 1663.~From a copy in the Rhode Island Historical Society • 225 STATUE OF ROGER WILLIAMS AT PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND. -From a photograph loaned by the Rhode Islanc;I Histori cal Society 23 0 WILLIAM CODDINGToN.-Reproduced from a l'hotograph of the portrait in the City Hall, Newport, Rhode Island, said to be that of the first Governor, William Cod dington • Facing 232 NEW JERSEY, 1656.-Facsimile of the map of A.
