In two vessels-the "Ark" and the "Dove" provided by the Proprietary, Lord Baltimore, Leonard Calvert, brother of Lord Balti more, commissioned as Lieutenant-General, embarked with about two hundred Colonists at Gravesend in October, 1633, arriving at Point Comfort February 27,1634. Thence they sailed up the Potomac to St. Clement's Island, where they took formal possession of Maryland. After this landing Calvert explored a tributary stream, now called the St. Mary's, until he came to an Indian village, where, after an agreement with the Indians, on March 27, 16340 he disembarked and called their new home St. Mary's • .
