Dit is ons eerste nuusbrief van 1998. ‘n Interessante en besige jaar wag op ons Stigting. Ons beplan ‘n hele paar aktiwiteite, plaaslik en internasionaal, vir vanjaar, en ons gaan al die lede se hulp en ondersteuning nodig hê. Gelukkig het ons ‘n besonder sterk span, met die talente, kennis, ervaring en entoesiasme om ons doel te bereik. 6 April 1998 Van al die VOC se dade is daar geen een wat groter gegroei het of meer duursaam was as sy skeepsdiensstasie, wat op 6 April 1652 hier in Tafelbaai aangelê is. Ons Stigting het n herdenkingsgeleentheid vir Maandag 6 April in die Kasteel gereël, en ons hoop om al die lede daar te sien. Dit is nie bloot n herdenking nie, maar is veral vir die vermaak en inligting van die publiek beplan. ‘n Kopie van die program is hierby ingesluit. Help asseblief om dit wyd bekend te maak, sodat ons Stigting se naam en doelstellings ook daardeur bevorder word. Ex Batavorum Die redakteur van Nederlandse Post was so vriendelik om toe te stem dat ons uittreksels oor Nederlandse bewaringssake uit sy blad in ons nuusbrief gebruik. Ek begin met hierdie paar, en u sal dit voortaan soos ‘n spesery met ons eie nuusitems gemeng vind. N.P. Het Prins Bernhard Fonds heeft de monumentenprijs 1997 toegekend aan het Cuijpersgenootschap, de vereniging tot behoud van 19de en 20 ste eeuws cultureel erfgoed in Nederland. De prijs en het hieraan verbonden bedrag van 100 000 gulden worden op 30 Oktober door Prins Bernhard uitgereikt. Vanaf de oprichting heeft het bekroonde genootschap vele malen kunnen voorkomen dat historisch belangrijke gebouwen werden verminkt of gesloopt. Dat zijn onder meer de Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam en het Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. (Sept.97) Funds The Weesper flagon of old gin will finally go to a good home on 6 April. Thanks to Lungile Gadezweni’s efforts, we are now half way to our target of R500, and we hope to sell the remaining tickets on that day. Do remember to put some extra cash in your pocket for this worthy cause. N.P. Jonge werklozen en mensen met een “taakstraf” gaan de 42 forten van de Stelling van Amsterdam opknappen. Per jaar krijgen 300 jongeren de kans op deze manier werkervaring op te doen. De Stelling is een 200 km lange verdedigingsgordel van forten, dijken, sluizen en andere bouwwerken die uit eind vorige eeuw dateerd. Sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog heeft de linie geen militaire functie meer en is verval ingetreeden.(Nov.97) Bookkeeper Natie Greeff thanks all members who paid their annual subscription of R30,00 at the first request, and now wishes to remind the remainder that we are a very small group, and can not function without the financial contribution of every single member. Our total income from this source amounts to no more than R900,00 a year, and the cost of living, which includes local and overseas postage, and gift tokens for the main speaker and the trumpeter for the 6 April, is high, for a society as small as ours. De Indonesische regering is bereid de archieven van de VOC open te stellen voor internasionaal wetenschappelijk onderzoek.Eerder deed minister Ritzen (Wetenschappen) het aanbod te helpen bij een wereldomspannend archievenonderzoek in landen waar de VOC vestigingen heeft had. Ritzen noemde de VOC-historie een belangerijk onderdeel van het 3 “wereldgeheugen.” Ondanks een uit 1975 daterend Cultureel Verdrag verloopt de samenwerking tussen Nederland en Indonesië op het gebied van archieven stroef. (Dec. 97) Projects Report * The great slab of blue slate engraved with the board game Nine Men’s Morris or “Meul,” was rescued from the Green Point beach and safely delivered into the Castle by our friends from Western Province Command. A suitable inscription (the Xhosa version is by friend Lungile) will be put up during the present phase of the Castle restoration project. * The latest news about the Morton Bay fig tree that towers over the entrance to the Castle of Good Hope, is that we got the PWD’s permission to have it removed as part of the present restoration work at the Castle, and that National Monuments Council will issue the necessary permit for the removal, to which will be attached a request for a bit of green stuff in that same area. It was there that I thought our Khoina memorial should go, but I suppose you can’t win ’em all. * The inscribed gravestone of Adriaan Deneys , the Company’s poshouer in Simon’s Bay in the 1750 ’s, is still lying under the port jacksons in Seaforth cemetery, where the Simon’s Town municipality put it a year or three ago. Gwen, Gawie and I discussed the possibility of giving it a special place in the Cole Point development project, with officials of the Southern Substructure. The project was temporarily shelved for financial reasons and because the land transfer from PWD to the South Peninsula Municipality did not take place as expected. The message from Councillor N Holderness to us is not to give up our efforts in connection with the stone and its possible relocation. She is hopeful that the coming financial year (June-June) may see the implementation of the plan, and encouraged us to renew our appeal with a letter to the Municipality. In Den Briel is de Prince Admirael gezonken, het schip van de watergeuzen. Het is een replica van het zeilschip waarmee de geuzen in 1572 de Spanjaarden verjaegen. In de haven van Briellen stak opeens alleen de mast nog boven de water uit. De Prince Admirael speelt altijd een prominente rol bij de nagespeelde bevrijding van Den Briel op 1 April. (Nov. 97) PROJEK 2002 Projek 2002 het van stapel geloop.Voor die einde van die jaar (waarskynlik in November) gaan ons Stigting die internasionale simposium in die Kasteel de Goede Hoop aanbied, waar VOC- entoesiaste gaan praat oor wat wereldwyd onderneem kan word om de loffelijke Compagnie se 400ste verjaardag te herdenk en sy nalatenskap te bewaar. Dit is moontlik gemaak deur die ondersteuning van ambassadeur Dirkse (Ambassadeur: Buitelandse Kulturele Hulpverlening) van die Nederlandse Departement Buitelandse Sake, en Konsul H Molenaar van die Nederlandse Konsulaat-Generaal. In April sal Paul Grobbelaar die saak met museumhoofde in Nederland aanroer, en in Mei gaan Piet Westra die hoofde van argiewe en biblioteke daaroor spreek. Wanneer hulle terugkom sal ons begin om uitnodigings oorsee en plaaslik te stuur, die program saam te stel en reëlings vir die kongres te tref. Behouwe Vaert! Die bemanning is soos gewoonlik van die beste, en ons het n paar nuwe groot kanonne aan boord gebring. Dit lyk asof daar geld in die koffers sal wees, en ons sien uit na die reis. By die vergadering wat hierbo adverteer word, sal die Voorsitter vertel waarheen ons op pad is, hoe ver ons gevorder het, watter ervarings ons onderweg gehad het, en wat waarskynlik vir ons voorlê. Ek dink u sal verras wees om te hoor wat al gedoen is.

    Transforming the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum Helene Vollgraaff 1 Introduction The Bo-Kaap Museum, managed by Iziko Museums of Cape Town 2, was established in 1978 as a house museum showing the lifestyle of a typical “Cape Malay” family of the 19 th century. The well-known University of Cape Town Orientalist, Dr. I.D. du Plessis, was the driving force behind the establishment of the museum. From the start, the Bo-Kaap Museum was heavily criticized for its Orientalist approach. In true I.D. du Plessis style, Cape Muslims were depicted as a separate cultural group with an exotic and charming lifestyle that seperated them from the rest of local society. The exhibitions and programmes of the museum tended to focus on Islam as an all-consuming identity and emphasized customs that distinguished Cape Muslims from other religious and cultural groups in Cape Town. The result was a skewed representation that did not do justice to the diversity within the Cape Muslim community and was silent about aspects of integration between the Muslim and broader Cape Town communities. 3 In 2003, Iziko Museums launched a project to redevelop the Bo-Kaap Museum as a social history museum with Islam at the Cape and the history of the Bo-Kaap as its main themes. This approach allowed the museum to challenge its own Orientalist roots and to introduce exhibitions dealing with contemporary issues. As an interim measure, Iziko developed a series of small temporary exhibitions and public programmes that together signaled Iziko Museum’s intent to change the content and style of the museum.

    Reflections on Fired – An Exhibition of South African Ceramics at Iziko Museums Article by Esther Esymol Abstract An exhibition dedicated to the history and development of South African ceramics, Fired, was on show at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, South Africa, from 25th February 2012 until its temporary closure on 28th January 2015. Fired is due to reopen early 2016. The exhibition was created from the rich array of ceramics held in the permanent collections of Iziko Museums of South Africa. Iziko was formed in 1998 when various Cape Town based museums, having formerly functioned separately, were amalgamated into one organizational structure. Fired was created to celebrate the artistry of South African ceramists, showcasing works in clay created for domestic, ceremonial or decorative purposes, dating from the archaeological past to the present. This article reflects on the curatorial and design approaches to Fired, and the various themes which informed the exhibition. Reference is also made to the formation of the Iziko ceramics collections, and the ways in which Fired as an exhibition departed from ceramics displays previously presented in the museums that made up the Iziko group. Key words ceramics, studio pottery, production pottery, Community Economic Development (CED) potteries, museums Introduction Fired – an Exhibition of South African Ceramics celebrated South Africa’s rich and diverse legacy of ceramic making. The exhibition showcased a selection of about two hundred ceramic works, including some of the earliest indigenous pottery made in South Africa, going back some two thousand years, through to work produced by contemporary South African ceramists. The works were drawn mainly from the Social History Collections department of Iziko Museums of South Africa.1 Design and curatorial approaches Fired was exhibited within an evocative space in the Castle, with arched ceilings and columns and presented in two large elongated chambers (Fig.1).
