MANNING AGAIN ON SUNDAY NIGHT! Two 8-0 teams? Win this week as the NFL reaches the midpoint of its season and the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts can match a milestone reached only three times in NFL history and not since 1990. Remember the Portsmouth Spartans (forerunner of the Detroit Lions)? They and the Green Bay Packers were the first to go 8-0 in a season: TWO AT 8-0 SEASON 8-0 TEAMS 1931 Green Bay Packers & Portsmouth Spartans 1934 Chicago Bears & Detroit Lions 1990 New York Giants & San Francisco 49ers 2006 Chicago Bears & Indianapolis Colts (both 7-0) The Colts last week tied the 1929-31 Packers as the only teams to win at least their first seven games in consecutive seasons. Green Bay started 10-0, 8-0 and 9-0 in those years. “It’s incredible,” says Colts linebacker GARY BRACKETT. “Sometimes, people take it for granted that you’re supposed to win. But 7-0 in two consecutive seasons is really something.” As the NFL reaches midseason, teams are starting to look down the road to the playoffs. “It’s not over,” says wide receiver DONALD DRIVER of the 3-4 Packers, who have won their last two.

  • Big Division Games Already? Week 2 Has 'Em!
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE 280 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10017 (212) 450-2000 * FAX (212) 681-7573 WWW.NFLMedia.com Joe Browne, Executive Vice President-Communications Greg Aiello, Vice President-Public Relations FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NFL-REG-2 9/12/06 BIG DIVISION GAMES ALREADY? WEEK 2 HAS ’EM! Big division games? It’s never too soon for that in the NFL! And Week 2, indeed, has them! In the NFC East, you have the whole division going at it, with the New York Giants at Philadelphia and Washington at Dallas Sunday night. In the NFC South, there’s Tampa Bay-Atlanta. In the AFC East, New England comes down to visit the Jets. Also, there’s Lions-Bears, Browns-Bengals and Chiefs-Broncos among others. “One of the goals every team has is to take care of business in your division,” says Seattle Seahawks head coach MIKE HOLMGREN, whose club faces the NFC West Arizona Cardinals this week. So after a Kickoff Weekend that saw surprises (11 road teams won, the most on an opening weekend in 23 years [12 in 1983])…debuts (Heisman Trophy-winner REGGIE BUSH accounted for 141 total yards for New Orleans in rushing, receiving and returning)…and comebacks (Jets quarterback CHAD PENNINGTON posted a 123.2 passer rating vs. Tennessee in his return from shoulder surgery), the NFL comes right back in Week 2 with who-knows-what’s in store? And leave it to a player -- the Jets’ Pennington, who missed most of a whole season last year -- to capture the exuberance a player feels in the return of an NFL season.

  • Broncos at Lions Post-Game Quotes Friday, Aug. 11, 2006 Ford Field
BRONCOS AT LIONS POST-GAME QUOTES FRIDAY, AUG. 11, 2006 FORD FIELD BRONCOS HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN Opening statement: "We got a chance to look at a lot of people today. I thought we had some great effort out there. You always go back and take a look at the things you did well and the things you did poorly. Anytime you're 0-for-4 in the redzone and you have three turnovers to one, it's hard to win the game. But on the bright side, I thought some of our younger guys stood out, especially in their first game. Obviously, we've got a lot of work to do." On QB Jay Cutler's performance: "He played well. He executed the offense. I think both teams were very vanilla in their approach to it - offensively and defensively. So you don't get too excited. But a guy's got to go out there and perform. I thought he showed a lot of poise and did an excellent job." On who will start at running back for his team: "Well, we got a chance to play a lot of them and evaluate them. I can't tell you for sure right now, but I know there's some good effort. Obviously, with Mike (Bell) having that fumble, that didn't help his debut. But that's typical for a lot of young guys. This is the National Football League, and these guys trip; these guys are very aggressive to the ball very similar to what Clinton Portis went through, especially early in those preseason games.
