Polesworth Matters

Dear All This has probably been one of the wettest weeks I have ever experienced at Polesworth. It would be fair to say that we have had wet students, wet staff and soaking wet grounds. Hopefully, the level of rainfall should now subside! On Thursday 10th October we have our first staff training day this academic year. Please be aware that students are not required to attend school on this date. On Wednesday 9th October we have our first ‘new style’ Curriculum Information Evening for parents. We very much look forward to seeing you and we welcome any feedback you may have as we are always striving to improve our service and provision. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions pertaining specifically to your child. Initially, questions should be directed to their tutor or their subject teacher.

Last January we ran a GCSE Success Evening for the parents/carers of Year 11 students with a new format. The feedback from the parents and carers who attended was very positive and was focused on the fact that the evening had made them feel more equipped to support their child’s achievement. Because this evening was so successful, we have now introduced a new style of parents’ evenings for the parents and carers of students in Years 9 to 11. These will take place on the 9th October for Arden and Kenilworth Houses and the 16th October for Warwick and Stratford Houses. The aim of these evenings is to provide parents with helpful advice and tips on how best to support their child’s achievement while still providing a way of discussing progress with staff.

To enable students to achieve and make progress it’s not enough for them to be able to use the information that we teach them while they are in the lesson from their working memory (although we do want this!) they also need to file information in their long-term memory. The main presentation of the information evening will deliver details on how parents and carers can engage their child in retrieval practise which helps them to remember information from throughout the course. There will also be advice on how students can be helped to make connections between the topic that they are currently studying and the previous topics that they have covered which helps students to “file” information.

Specific information from every subject will be provided in a convenient booklet which parents/carers can reference. The core subjects of English, Maths and Science will give presentations with subject specific guidance and staff from all subjects will be available to speak to parents and carers. Revision booklets and resources which are on sale in the online school shop (https:// app.parentpay.com/ParentPayShop/Uniform/Default.aspx?shopid=351) will also be available to buy on the nights for parents/carers to collect.

We very much hope that you can join us!

Thanks for all the positive messages of support over the past few weeks. The coast to coast ride is still going ahead this weekend despite the weather! Currently, we have raised nearly £2000 for the Air Ambulance. I will give details of the ride and put some photos in Polesworth Matters when it is completed.

Last week 94 Yr11 Geography students travelled to North Norfolk to complete fieldwork relating to their Paper 3 exam. Students travelled to Happisburgh and Sea Palling where they worked to determine the suitability of the coastal defences. They looked at groynes, revetments, rip-rap and offshore breakwaters carrying out several techniques including bi-polar and cost- benefit analyses, as well as measuring the rate of long-shore drift at each location.

On the final day students travelled to Cromer to complete human geography field techniques, including EQI and land use surveys and pedestrian counts, with a few to determining how each change with proximity to the coastline.

Staying at Overstrand Hall students also took part in a number of team- building exercises including archery competitions, blindfolded-obstacle courses that built trust and bouldering. Although the weather was abysmal at times students showed great spirit and will hopefully be well-rewarded come the Summer!
