MATERIALS IN THE SERIES Teacher's Guide –This Teacher's Guide has been prepared to aid the teacher in utilizing materials contained within this series. In addition to this introductory material, the guide contains the following: • Suggested Instructional Notes • Student Learning Goals • Lesson Plans • Test Questions on Blackline Masters Quizzes for duplication and handout to students • Timeline of Events INSTRUCTIONAL NOTES It is suggested that you preview the series and read the Student Goals and Teacher Points. By doing so, you will become familiar with the materials and be better prepared to adapt the series to the needs of your class. Please note that each program is set up to be played continuously and you will probably find it best to follow the series and the programs in the order in which they are presented, but this is not necessary. Each program can be divided into chapters accessed through the DVD’s Menu Screen under Chapter Selects. In this way each chapter can be played and studied separately. A proposed Lesson Plan based on chapter headings accessed through the DVD menu screen can be found on page six of this Teacher’s Guide. It is also suggested that the series presentation take place before the entire class and under your direction. As you review the instructional programs outlined in the Teacher's Guide, you may find it necessary to make some changes, deletions, or additions to fit the specific needs of your students. After viewing each program you may wish to copy the Test Questions on Blackline Masters 1A, 2A, 3A ... and distribute it to your class to measure their comprehension of the events. 3 INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY OF SERIES A History of Chinese American Achievement in the United States is a new approach to presenting in an exciting way Chinese American history from its first intrepid explorers 1500 years ago to the 21st century’s Chinese American entrepreneurs. The series is designed to present A History of Chinese American Achievement in the United States in a way that promotes successful student learning. The series begins with an overview of China’s unique history and culture as well as its importance to the development of western European culture. After showing the journey of Hwui Shan, an explorer who visited North America on behalf of the Chinese Emperor in 476 A.D., the story skips forward to the Chinese immigrants who in the mid 1800s escaped war torn China and came to Hawaii and California, looking for a better and safer way of life. The story continues as Chinese Americans progress from temporary visitors seeking work as gold miners and railroad builders to more permanent settlers as shopkeepers and farmers. Then from 1882 to 1943, the story examines Chinese American perseverance in the face of racism, violence and segregation that held Chinese Americans back from participating fully in the American dream. It discusses the heroes and heroines who throughout that period worked to overcome prejudice against Chinese Americans … Who worked to overcome the insularity of the Chinese culture … And who worked to become a part of the American dream while at the same time preserving the uniqueness of the Chinese culture. The story ends with the fulfillment of the promises of Chinese Americans who at the beginning of the new millennium become scientists, builders and entrepreneurs leading America into the 21st century. The eight programs are laid out so they can be viewed in their entirety, or by selecting individual chapters, be viewed separately. Each chapter presents a story of a historical figure or figures, as well as themes of the unique Chinese American identity, the fight for equal rights, groundbreakers who opened doors for others to follow, heroes and heroines, the expression of the Chinese American soul, and the Chinese American entrepreneurial spirit that has had a distinctive impact on the American cultural fabric. Most importantly historical themes and figures are clearly presented using state of the art visuals. Below is a list of the series’ programs and their chapters. Using these programs, teachers can create a lesson plan to cover the specific issues, themes and historical figures mentioned. Their work on the home front allowed more military pilots to join the fighting overseas. As you read the biography below, look for examples of the courage and patriotism of Hazel Ying Lee and the other women of the (342-FH-4A05432) Archives National WASP. What did theyprove? Pilots were in short supply. As the United States moved into the second year of the war, the military could not train fliers fast enough to meet the needs of U.S. forces in Europe and the Pacific. In response, civilian aviator Jacqueline Cochran worked with the U.S. Army to set up a new program that would train female pilots. She proposed that these pilots could take over work in America that was being done by military pilots. The male pilots would then be free to fight the war overseas. Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) had just been born. Twenty-five thousand women applied to this organization. Candidates were required to have commercial flying licenses and high school diplomas. Only American citizens between the ages of 21 and 24 were considered. The 1,830 women who were admitted were then given military flight training, and of them, 1,074 earned their wings. Once trained, the women of WASP took new planes on test flights to pinpoint any mechanical problems.

He had once been movie star handsome, but now his only rec- ognizable original features were his eyes. Despite all he d been through-frustrations, crashes, defeats, his first wife dying in his arms-his eyes had kept their twinkle. And after all Chin had suffered, he campaigned for war bonds, posing for photos with his pipe jutting at a jaunty angle. When he was well enough he went back to flying, this time over the Himalayas, on a route dubbed the "Aluminum Tiail" because of the hundreds of airplane wrecl$ that marked its course. Arthur Tien Chin (Chin Shui-Tin) be- came an eight-victory ace during a combat career that ended two years before his coun- try officially entered World War II. Born on October 23,1973, he grew up in portland, Ore. In the early 1930s, he and a number of other promising young Chinese-American students entered flight training at the Al Greenwood fllng school in Portland, sup- ported by the local Chinese community. Downing Downing 1 Abstract In the years leading up to and including World War II, the Japanese invaded China, committing war crimes and atrocities that some say rivaled those committed by the German National Socialist (Nazi) Party in Europe. However, due to a number of factors following the end of World War II, many conflicting points of view about Nanjing have arisen, including views from Japanese ultranationalists, Chinese victims and their descendants, and from other outside parties, including Americans and Europeans. In the present day, the evidence and the different testimonies of what may have happened in Nanjing have become so convoluted that it would be impossible to come up with a purely factual, unbiased historical account of the events in Nanjing during the Japanese invasion on December 13, 1937 and the weeks leading up to and following that invasion. By looking at some of the most popular sources and references pertaining to the Nanjing Massacre, one can assess just how disputed the topic has become and how truly impossible it is for historians to arrive at a single, agreed upon history of the event. Born in Portland, Oregon, Chin’s father was from Taishan, Guangdong Province, China while his mother was from Peru. Angered by the Japanese invasion of China, he began flight training in 1932 while still in high school. At the end of 1932 he left high school without graduating (remedied in 1986 when he graduated with his grandson) and volunteered for the Cantonese Air Force. Like many Chinese military officers and officials of the era, Chin was sent to Nazi Germany and completed his air training with the Luftwaffe in Bavaria in 1936. In 1937 he began active combat against the Japanese scoring his first two bomber kills. Heavily damaged in one encounter with 3 Japanese fighters in 1938 he deliberately rammed one and destroyed it before bailing out. His bravery attracted the attention of General Claire Chennault, the leader of the American Volunteer Group “Flying Tigers” who visited Chin in the hospital.

    Asian American and Pacific Islander Fact Sheet Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders have been serving honorably in the United States Military, since the War of 1812. The first Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) to reach general officer rank was Brigadier General Albert Lyman, part Chinese American and Native Hawaiian, was the commanding general of the 32nd Army Division that fought in the Leyte campaigns in the Philippines in World War II. The highest ranking AANHPI in the military was Eric K. Shinseki, who was the former Army Chief of Staff. Medal of Honor The first Medal of Honor recipient was to US Army Private Jose Nisperos, from the Philippine Scouts Unit for this action on September 24, 1911. The one and only Medal of Honor awarded during peacetime on January 21, 1915 was to Second Class Telesforo Trinidad. Twenty-one of the twenty- four Medal of Honor recipients during WWII were Japanese-Americans serving with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team or the 100th Infantry Battalion. In the Korean War, the first Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders, Private First Class Anthony T. Kaho'ohanohano and Private First Class Herbert K. Pililaau were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions on Sept. 1, 1951 and September 17, 1951 respectively. Three Asian Americans were awarded in Vietnam War Corporal Terry Kawamura, Staff Sergeant Elmelindo Smith, and Sergeant First Class Rodney Yano. A total of 33 Asian American and Pacific Islanders have received this prestigious honor for their actions during war and in peacetime. Congressional Gold Medal On November 3, 2011, members of the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442d Regimental Combat Team, and Military Intelligence Service also known as the "Go for Broke" regiment received the Congressional Gold Medal.
