Abstract: Despite the important effort of knowing the Ophiuroidea diversity in the Mexican Pacific, some mis- takes in the taxonomic nomenclature have pervaded through time. In order to clarify the latter, a checklist based on literature review of brittle stars from the Mexican Pacific is provided. We reviewed a total of 105 references that in total summarized 125 species of brittle stars from the Mexican Pacific (112) and the Gulf of California (97), belonging to two orders, 16 families and 50 genera. These records are higher than those reported on previ- ous studies carried out in the area. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT A key is given for 85 species of ophiuroids from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea covering a depth range from the intertidal down to 30 m. Figures highlighting important anatomical features associated with couplets in the key are provided. 2 INTRODUCTION The Caribbean region is one of the major coral reef zoogeographic provinces and a region of intensive human use of marine resources for tourism and fisheries (Aide and Grau, 2004). With the world-wide decline of coral reefs, and deterioration of shallow-water marine habitats in general, ecological and biodiversity studies have become more important than ever before (Bellwood et al., 2004). Ecological and biodiversity studies require identification of collected specimens, often by biologists not specializing in taxonomy, and therefore identification guides easily accessible to a diversity of biologists are necessary. -

ZooKeys 663: 1–19. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.663.11413 Abstract The first morphological observation of a euryalid brittle star,Asteronyx loveni, using non-destructive X- ray micro-computed tomography (µCT) was performed. The body of euryalids is covered by thick skin, and it is very difficult to observe the ossicles without dissolving the skin. Computed tomography with micrometer resolution (approximately 4.5–15.4 µm) was used to construct 3D images of skeletal ossicles and soft tissues in the ophiuroid’s body. Shape and positional arrangement of taxonomically important ossicles were clearly observed without any damage to the body. -

Vereador Olimpio Grande, S/N, CEP 49500-000, Itabaiana, SE, Brasil Abstract.- This study provides an updated morphological description of Asteroporpa (Asteroporpa) annulata based on one specimen from the northeastern coast of Brazil, thus validating the previously uncertain occurrence of this species there. We also provide notes on the known geographic distribution of the subgenus Asteroporpa (Asteroporpa) and comments on ecological aspects of this taxon. Given our limited knowledge of the Euryalida fauna along the Brazilian coast, these new records are important for understanding the distribution, dispersal and speciation patterns of this group. The number of Euryalida reported for the Brazilian coast is increased to eight with this record. Key words: Echinodermata, taxonomy, ophiurans, geographical distribution INTRODUCTION The order Euryalida represents a group of brittle stars, slowly than in other echinoderm taxa (Baker 1980). -

In an initiative to help further our understanding, invertebrate surveys over the past seven years have now revealed more than 500 species, many of which are endemic. Illustrated with hundreds of representative photographs, it includes brief narratives on the biology and ecology of the major taxonomic groups and characteristic features of common species. It is primarily aimed at scientifi c observers, and is intended to be used as both a training tool prior to deployment at-sea, and for use in making accurate identifi cations of invertebrate by catch when operating in the HIMI region. Many of the featured organisms are also found throughout the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, the guide therefore having national appeal. They were identified as Gorgonocephalus eucnemis (Müller & Troschel, 1842), belonging to family Gorgonocephalidae of order Euryalida, which was new to the Korean fauna. Their molecular analyses were done with newly intended COI primers of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene for the accurate molecular identification. The Korean G. eucnemis was coincident with this NCBI species as a result of Blast analysis, which showed the 99% similarity. In the current study, three Gorgonocephalus species have been report- ed from Korea.
