For Immediate Release: Media Contact: June 24, 2009 Kris Parker 435-776-7859 [email protected] Sundance Institute Celebrates Summer with Junebug and Outdoor Screenings of Riding Giants and Songcatcher Junebug, featuring Amy Adams, screens July 1 at Park City Library Surfing documentary Riding Giants screens under the stars August 3 in Salt Lake City Songcatcher screens at City Park August 5 Park City, UT -- Sundance Institute today announced a trio of screenings for local Utah audiences bringing the best summer has to offer -- timeless southern storytelling, the search for the "perfect wave," and the warm twang of Appalachian mountain music. Always free of charge, the screenings are highlights from previous Sundance Film Festivals and are part of the Sundance Institute Film Series, a year-round community event program that offers works that best represent the Institute’s spectrum of programs. The films in this summer's screenings showcase some of the memorable artists and talent to emerge from Film Festival -- Amy Adams's role in Junebug led to her Hollywood fame, while Riding Giants director Stacy Peralta first came to the Festival with Dogtown and Z-boys in 2001 and became a three-time Festival alum in 2008 with Made in America. First, by establishing the ethos of the American Frontier and Manifest Destiny in the ‘old west’; and then, by demonstrating how as the American Frontier was tamed, the oceanic horizon came to hold a new allure of adventure and endless possibility. I assert that with the sea alone remaining as the only untamed wilderness, the image of the surfer came to supplant the place of the cowboy within the American Imaginary. Because the traditional cowboy aesthetic had been displaced through enclosure and modernization, the icon of the surfer stood forth as the new romantic figure of the American West who continued to grapple with the sublime forces of nature and push back the boundaries of known coastal frontiers, worldwide. -
