Nutritional Composition of Synodontis Nigrita and Tilapia Mariae from the Jamieson River, Sapele, Delta State, Nigeria

The mineral composition of Synodontis nigrita and Tilapia mariae revealed sodium values of 32.90 mg/kg and 30.20 mg/kg, potas- sium values of 171.70 mg/kg and 175.60 mg/kg, calcium values of 13.50 mg/kg and 9.20 mg/kg, magnesium content of 15.00 mg/kg and 13.40 mg/kg, respectively. -

The abundance and distribution, length-weight, condition factor, diet and reproduction of Synodontis schall and S. nigrita from the Ouémé (Bénin) are described. S. nigrita is less abundant than S. schall in the river. Both species are euryphagous with their diet containing a wide variety of food items that include various types of plankton, invertebrates and plants. This high diversity of the food composition indicates a wide adaptability to the habitats in which they live. This is an important strategy for survival and an advantage over the fish species compet- ing for a specific food item. Size at maturity differs between species for both males (15 cm TL for S. schall and 21 cm TL for S. nigrita) and females (16 cm and 22 cm, respectively). Fecundity range is higher for S. -

Argungu and H.S Akanbi Department of Forestry and Fisheries, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto Nigeria ABSTRACT: The food and feeding habits of Synodontis nigrita (Cuvier and Valenciennes) from River Rima were studied. One hundred and three samples were collected from September to October 2006. The stomachs were analyzed using frequency of occurrence method. The mean total length of the samples was 13.04±2.55SD, mean total weight 30.42±21.84SD and mean gut length 39.57±8.92SD. The fish is an omnivore, feeding mainly on phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus, plant tissues, insects, crustaceans and insect parts. The presence of detritus in almost all the stomachs indicated bottom feeding. The fish gut length was 3 times the body length. Eyo, O.O. 1Falola and 1M.A. Okpanachi 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Kogi State University, Anyigba, Nigeria. 2 Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Monthly sampling of catches at the confluence area of Niger and Benue rivers was carried out between March 2007 and February 2008 to determine the occurrence of parasites in Synodontis sorex as part of a larger research work on parasites of Siluriformes. A total of 64 hosts were examined and the prevalence of infection was 59.37%. Parasite species encountered included the protozoan Trichodinids, 2 digeneans (Allocreadium ghanensis, Metacercaria of Pygidiopsis spp), 2 cestodes (Monobothrioides woodlandii, Bothriocephalus acheilognathii), 5 nematodes (Procamallanus laevionchus, Rhabdochona congolensis, Spinitectus guntheri, Camallanus spp, Contracaecum spp) and acanthella - the larval stages of acanthocephalans). Nematode parasites infected Synodontis sorex more than other parasite groups, with Camallanus spp recording the highest prevalence of 28.13%. Infection of S.sorex was between 26-100+ gm weight classes and 0-30cm length classes. The overall worm burden was independent of sex of the fish hosts. Annotated checklist for fishes of the Main Nile Basin in the Sudan and Egypt based on recent specimen records (2006-2015) by Dirk NEUMANN* (1), Henriette OBERMAIER (2) & Timo MORITZ (3, 4) Abstract. – The results of several short ichthyological surveys on the Nile Basin in Sudan between 2006 and 2015 are presented. In attempting to represent major type localities and recently observed variability, we comple- ment known field records with records of a reference collection of recent fish bones collected during the 1980s and records of aberrant cichlids populations in Egypt observed at El Fayum and in lakes of the Nile Delta. From 133 native species in the Republic of the Sudan and Egypt, 107 out of 62 genera and 28 families have been con- firmed so far. The Main Nile Basin,i.e. the Sudd and all affluents to the Nile in the South Sudan and the Republic of the Sudan (White and Blue Nile, Sobat and Atbara) and all satellite waterbodies in Egypt, currently harbours 150 species. This count includes 10 “abberant” populations putatively representing distinct species, namely Garra cf. vinciguerrae, G. sp. nov. “flathead”, G. sp. “Sennar”, Haplochromis sp. “Delta1”, H. sp. “Delta2” and H. sp. “Fayum”, Hemichromis cf. letourneuxi “Birkat Abu Jumas”, Micropanchax cf. loati, Poropanchax © SFI cf. normani, and Chiloglanis sp. “Sennar”. SUMMARY: The cephalic and pectoral girdle structures of Pangasius macronema are described and compared with those of another representative of the same genus, Pangasius larnaudii, and of representatives of the other pangasiid genus, Helicophagus leptorhynchus and Helicophagus typus, as well as of several other catfishes, as the foundation for a discussion of the synapomorphies and phylogenetic relationships of the Pangasiidae. The following two features could constitute Pangasiidae autapomorphies: 1) presence of prominent crest on the dorso-lateral surfaces of both the hyomandibulo-metapterygoid and the ento-ectopterygoid; 2) presence of a large, circular foramen between the anterodorsomedial surface of the extrascapular, the dorsomesial surface of the pterotic and the dorsolateral surface of the parieto-supraoccipital.
