Denton, Texas August, 1999 Sanchez, Noe, The Fourteen Setesta's of Heitor Villa- T.obos (1887-1959) . Master of Music (Musicology), August, 1999, 156 pp., 16 charts, 12 musical scores, 14 translations, discography, bibliography, 66 titles. The Fourteen Serestas of Heitor Villa-Lobos comprise a group of songs that expresses Villa-Lobos's compositional technique for the voice. These songs are challenging as a topic because not much historical or analytical research has been done on them. I approach the topic by providing historical background on the modinha and how it relates to the serSsta. This is followed by a descriptive analysis in the order of the set, which includes musical examples, chart diagrams, and comparisons of the serestas to other works. I hope to have contributed valuable information to the research of these songs since Villa-Lobos wrote over ninety solo vocal songs which still await analysis and discussion. This thesis is a contribution toward narrowing this gap. 171 //#/ /yo, 76/5" THE FOURTEEN SERESTAS OF HEITOR VILLA-LOBOS (1887-1959) THESIS > Presented to the Graduate Council of the University of North Texas in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF MUSIC By Noe Sanchez, B.M. The Cambridge Companion to Ravel Edited by Deborah Mawer Frontmatter More Information
Cambridge University Press 0521648564 - The Cambridge Companion to Ravel Edited by Deborah Mawer Frontmatter More information The Cambridge Companion to Ravel This Companion provides a comprehensive introduction to the life, music and compositional aesthetic of the French composer Maurice Ravel (1875–1937). Leading international scholars offer a powerful reassessment of this most private and elusive musician, examining his work in detail within its cultural context. Supported by many music examples, the volume explores the full range of Ravel’s work – piano repertory, chamber works, orchestral music, ballets, songs and operas – and makes illuminating comparisons with the music of Couperin, Gounod, Chabrier and Debussy. The chapters present the latest research focusing on topics such as Ravel’s exoticism and Spanishness and conclude by analysing the performance and reception of his music, including previously untranslated reviews. Marking the 125th anniversary of Ravel’s birth, the Companion as a whole aims to secure a solid foundation for Ravel studies in the twenty-first century and will appeal to all enthusiasts and students of his music. The editor, Deborah Mawer, is Lecturer in Music at Lancaster University, where she specialises in French music (c. 1890–1939). She is author of Darius Milhaud (1997) and ‘Darius Milhaud, La Création du monde’ (1996), an analytical listening guide. She also writes on music analysis and education. © Cambridge University Press www.cambridge.org Cambridge University Press 0521648564 - The Cambridge Companion -
Cohesion of Composer and Singer: the Female Singers of Poulenc
COHESION OF COMPOSER AND SINGER: THE FEMALE SINGERS OF POULENC DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan Joanne Musselman, B.M., M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Document Committee: J. Robin Rice, Adviser Approved by: Hilary Apfelstadt Wayne Redenbarger ________________________ Adviser Graduate Program in Music Copyright by Susan Joanne Musselman 2007 ABSTRACT Every artist’s works spring from an aspiring catalyst. One’s muses can range from a beloved city to a spectacular piece of music, or even a favorite time of year. Francis Poulenc’s inspiration for song-writing came from the high level of intimacy he had with his close friends. They provided the stimulation and encouragement needed for a lifetime of composition. There is a substantial amount of information about Francis Poulenc’s life and works available. We are fortunate to have access to his own writings, including a diary of his songs, an in-depth interview with a close friend, and a large collection of his correspondence with friends, fellow composers, and his singers. It is through these documents that we not only glean knowledge of this great composer, but also catch a glimpse of the musical accuracy Poulenc so desired in the performance of his songs. A certain amount of scandal surrounded Poulenc during his lifetime and even well after his passing. Many rumors existed involving his homosexuality and his relationships with other male musicians, as well as the possible fathering of a daughter. The primary goal of this document is not to unearth any hidden innuendos regarding his personal life, however, but to humanize the relationships that Poulenc had with so many of his singers. -
