The HIGA training year is divided into four terms to maintain a cohesive relationship within the Hills International College timetable requirements. Throughout the year the following coaching techniques and programming takes place within each term. WORLD FIRST IN GOLF EDUCATION Hills Educational Foundation has established a unique golf education opportunity for young golfers. The concept of providing a championship golf course, state of the art golf coaching training program and academic program is quite unique. The 7551-yard championship golf course (the longest in Australia) is designed specifically to provide the challenges required for young golfers to develop their talent and become future champions. The 8000 square meters of high-quality turf practice tees and 4.5 hectares of driving range area create the ideal training facility and provide a perfect opportunity for young golfers to develop professional level skills. The 1500m2 purpose designed short game training facilities incorporate the challenges golfers will have to face during their career including a multitude of special grasses, bunkers, slopes and lies. The high-tech golf program has been developed here in Queensland and is a world leader in this sophisticated golf education program. The program provides a comprehensive golf training package, in tandem with a respected secondary school academic education. Striking the right balance between the golf and academic components of the program is vital. The range of program options is designed to meet the wide variety of student needs. The world’s best golfers combine extensive technical, physical and psychological skills to master the game. Hills International Golf Program takes a holistic approach to golf education, combining extensive physical and psychological training, biomechanics, and technical development. The program aims to maximise the strengths and minimise the weaknesses of students by closely monitoring and carefully refining their development. As well as self-improvement and enjoyment from golf, many of the students have been busy making a name for themselves in golf circles not only in their own districts but also on a state, national and international level. 4 GOLF PROGRAM OVERVIEW Provider: HIGA Professionals (PGA accredited) and Staff Player Assessment • Video analysis / golf swing evaluation • Trackman evaluation • Puttlab evaluation • Short game skills test • Long game skills test • Statistical review course play / round analysis Tournament Scheduling and Planning • Local • Interstate • International – APJGA events • Practical speech making workshop • Advice & assistance on preparing a resume for US College applications • Discuss scheduling events for the season Long Game Tuition • Pre swing principals • Full swing principals & techniques • Shot shaping • Trouble shots and awkward stances Short Game Tuition • Putting – conversion and long • Chipping – running, bump and run • Pitching • Sand play • Lob shots • Wedge work Course Management Tuition • Pre round routines • Strengths and weaknesses • Developing a sound game plan Practice and Drill Planning • Short Game • Long game • On course 5 • Advice on weekly practice planning to maintain high performance Performance Coaching • Goal setting • Mental preparation for tournaments – prior, during, after • Coping strategies when under pressure • Centering – breathing techniques • Progressive Muscle relaxation Statistical Analysis and Player Review Sessions • Swing technique • Practice • Playing Provider: HIGA Strength and Conditioning Coaches and Specialists Physical Screening Sports Physiotherapist • Initial assessment and screening report • Develop a personalised exercise program • Understanding the general motor movements of the golf swing • Looking at swing technique from a physical perspective Fitness Assessment • Cardiovascular endurance • Strength and conditioning • Core stability • Flexibility • Progress monitoring • Program evaluation Nutrition • Nutritional lecture • Suggested eating & hydration plan – prior, during and after tournament rounds 6 PROGRAM INCLUSIONS Driving Range Balls Unlimited driving range balls – during school terms Note – Range balls may be provided to students in holiday periods at the sole discretion of the Management of Hills Golf Course Saturday Club Competitions Entitlement to play in all Saturday Club competitions at the student’s own expense Excluding the Christmas holiday period Wednesday Club Competitions Entitlement to play in all Wednesday Club tournaments. • Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf
COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”.
