Along with board members Coralie Bryant (Vice-Chair), Pamela Rebello, and Addie Penner, who were originally appointed as I was in 2000, I am leaving Council in conformity with the Manitoba Auditor General’s recommendation that appointed members of provincial agencies should not serve longer than 10 years. All three of the above have made major contributions to the work of the Council. Coralie has acted as Chair of the Audit, Finance and Human Resource Committee since 2000, while also serving on a great number of other committees, and Pam and Addie have held various positions on committees and working groups. I owe them, and all the past members

They first joined forces to form a children’s theatre company and then later founded Theatre 77. In 1958, Theatre 77 merged with Winnipeg Little Theatre to become Canada’s first regional theatre – the Manitoba Theatre Centre. MTC co-founders John Hirsch (left) and Tom Hendry. MTC spent its first decade in the Dominion Theatre until it was demolished to make way for the Richardson Building/Fairmont complex. During construction of the new theatre, MTC presented two seasons at the Centennial Concert Hall. On November 2, 1970, the Manitoba Theatre Centre opened at its present location with Bertolt Brecht’s A Man’s A Man, directed by John Hirsch. Since its founding, MTC has produced more than 500 plays with hundreds of well-known actors, including Len Cariou, Graham Greene, Martha Henry, Judd Hirsch, Tom Hulce, William Hurt, Tom Jackson, Robert Lepage, Seana McKenna, Eric Peterson, Gordon Pinsent, Keanu Reeves, Fiona Reid, R.H. Thomson, Kathleen Turner and Al Waxman. Now, more than 50 years after John Hirsch and Tom Hendry envi- sioned a centre for theatre in Manitoba, MTC continues to do all they dreamed of and more. Today, MTC produces 10 plays on two stages, a regional tour, two festivals and a wide range of youth programming. Artistic Director Steven Schipper is attuned to his audience, General Manager Zaz Bajon knows how to raise money and spend it wisely, and the community supports the theatre with grants, donations, volunteer time and thousands of subscriptions.

    1 ANNUAL REPORT 2012/13 MISSION The Royal Winnipeg Ballet enriches the human experience by teaching, creating and performing outstanding dance. VISION Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be renowned as an organization that teaches, creates and performs outstanding dance. The RWB will be embraced in Winnipeg and beyond. We will be seen as ambassadors for dance, for our city, our province and our country. The RWB will be a dynamic member of the world dance community. Our work will reflect passion, exuberance, honesty, excellence and integrity. We will take our place among the premier dance companies of the world. 2012/13 proved once again that Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet is committed to enriching the human experience by teaching, creating and performing outstanding dance both at home and across North America. We had resounding success at the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow International Dance Festival, our ambitious touring schedule and our many outreach activities that have allowed us a heightened connectivity with communities on a local, national and international scale. As we continue to operate in an uncertain global economy each season is not without its challenges; however, our energy and creativity continue to go undiminished as we strive for the highest artistic standards in everything we do as an organization. As we reflect on the past year we feel truly energized by the great achievements of the season beginning with the Canadian Premiere of choreographic legend Twyla Tharp’s The Princess & The Goblin, and featuring Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and a lavish reprise of Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet. In 2012/13, the RWB School Professional Division attracted students and teachers from all over the globe.
