This issue begins a discussion on B – Brotherhood. Readers may email us their experience. Below is mine.

A third-year Engineering student at UP-Diliman, I accepted the invitation of a Greek-lettered fraternity to join its ranks. SHARING The fraternity counts among its rolls many of the College faculty. My batch was the first of all-second-generation aspi- rants. Our fathers before us are members of this fraternity.

The initiation rites, conducted at night after classes, lasted an eternity of seven days. Individually and collectively, we were subjected to many acts meant to humble us, foremost of which was kissing the paddle — a small oar used to steer a banca treading water. Measuring 30 inches long, six inches wide at its tip tapering to 2 inches at the handle and 1.5 inches thick for strength, the paddle’s use was modified to fit its purpose.
